Queen’s Park Report
The Budget passed its first hurdle, although not eas-ily. Several changes were made to the Budget to obtain support. There are several more votes to come, however, before it becomes law. Budget initiatives such as the Jobs and Prosperity Fund must wait until the Budget is passed. Green Energy Update: Our Green Energy Plan has 4 parts: 1. Stop burning coal. It was 25% of our power in 2003.
Burning coal makes the air dirty, dirty air makes people sick. It was making thousands ill every year, causing premature deaths, and creating breathing difficulties for many. We were also spending $4 billion every year in health and other costs from burning coal.
2. Replace coal with clean sources, including hydro, solar, wind and bio.
3. Create a renewable energy industry here in Ontario by requiring that part of every renewable project be On-tario made.
4. Use our investment in renewable energy to launch into the clean technology sector, which will be $3 trillion by 2020.
Progress: As Energy Minister, I recently released the Review of our green energy approach. It shows substantial progress: 1. Coal: We will be out completely by 2014, and are al-
most there now.
2. Renewables: Over the next 2 years, we will start receiving electricity from more renewable energy sources than ever before in our history.
3. Jobs: Over the next 2 years, there will be more people employed in the green energy sector, making more parts, than ever before in our history.
4. Clean Technology: Smart grid, smart meters, data management, etc. has already established us among the world leaders. Using our renewable industry as a springboard, we are well-positioned to take advantage of this huge opportunity.
To check out the Green Energy Review, go to: http://www.energy.gov.on.ca/en/fit-and-microfit-program/2-year-fit-review/. Research: Research leads to advances in health, quality of life, and jobs. Five Western University research-ers were recently awarded funding by Ontario to advance their projects. They include Dr. Jessica Grahn, whose re-search into how the brain processes music might lead to new treatments for brain disorders. Since 2003, Ontario funding for Western U research totals almost $150 million.
Why London and Western U? Dr. Grahn came to London, Ontario to conduct her search. Among the rea-sons are the brain-imaging machines we have here – the most powerful in the world. Several years ago, the Ontario government purchased these machines for Western. They are used by a brain and mind team including Dr. Mel Goodale and Dr. Ravi Menon, joined more recently by Dr. Adrian Owen, who have collectively established them-selves as among, if not the, best in the world. That’s right. Here in London, Ontario. Contact Me: Please let me know your advice, ques-tions or comments at [email protected] , http://www.chrisbentley.onmpp.ca/ or 519-657-3120. Time flies by! It’s hard to believe that one year ago I was given the honour of serving you as your Member of Parliament. I’ve been working exceptionally hard, and am quite lucky to be surrounded by such hard-working staff and a supportive family. Delivering for London North Centre Ensuring that our city’s economy grows is a top priority of mine. Since becoming your Member of Parliament, I have been pleased to announce over $20 million in federal funding for over 30 projects in London North Centre. Such investments have in-cluded funding for job skills programs, cultural festivals, arts exhibitions, innovation and research, and housing. Visiting organizations in my riding to announce investments is one of my favourite parts of the job. Supporting our commu-nity is what it’s all about. Getting the Job Done Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of my constituents either at the grocery store, at one of the tre-mendous cultural festivals in our riding, at their place of business, or in my constituency office. I really enjoy having the opportu-nity to speak or meet with my constituents. At the end of the day,
I represent everyone in my riding regardless of political affilia-tion, and thus I appreciate the opportunity to gain their feedback. Roundtables, for example, have proven to be effective. Shortly after being elected, I sought to bring the community to-gether to better obtain feedback about the issues important to them. I was pleased to host a roundtable with FedDev Minister Gary Goodyear which brought together civic and business leaders from across the city to discuss economic development; a violence against women roundtable with Justice Minister and Attorney General Rob Nicholson at Western University’s Centre for Vio-lence Against Women and Children; a multicultural roundtable hosted by the African Community Council of London in my con-stituency office to discuss ways in which London’s new Canadi-ans can better integrate; and, finally, in February I was pleased to host a small-business roundtable with Small Business Minister Maxime Bernier at the Richard Ivey School of Business to discuss ways in which London’s small businesses can grow and create more jobs. Standing Up for London While in Ottawa, I have been honoured to rise in the House of Commons on numerous occasions to speak about the many
outstanding individuals, businesses, and organizations in our rid-ing. In fact, I’ve spoken 8,687 words in the House in my first year. That’s a lot of talking; however, as your Member of Parlia-ment I feel it’s imperative that I speak on your behalf and recog-nize the many attributes our riding possesses. I’m pleased to have had a perfect attendance record in the House of Commons. In fact, last June I was in my seat at 3:30 AM dur-ing debate on Canada Post. Sure, the hours are long, but as your Member of Parliament it is my responsibility to show up regard-less of what time of day it may be. I have to say, it’s been a pleasure. SAVE THE DATE! Constituency Office BBQ On Saturday, June 16 from 11 AM – 1 PM, I invite you to visit my constituency office to join my staff and I for complimen-tary hot dogs and refreshments! Here to Serve You If we can assist you with any federal Government concern or issue, my constituency office is located at 546 King Street (King and William) and can be reached by phone at 519-663-9777 or email [email protected].

VISITING CANADA: PARENT AND GRANDPARENT SUPER VISAS Parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and perma-nent residents have a new option for visiting Canada. As of De-cember 1, 2011, they may be eligible to apply for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa and enjoy visiting their family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status. To apply for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa, they must: be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a per-manent resident of Canada; be found admissible to Canada; and meet certain other conditions. Please note that Applicants may request a multiple entry visa for up to ten years if they submit the applicable fees along with their application. Fees for a single entry visa are $75.00 and $150.00 for a multiple entry visa. It is important to note that Applicants cannot include de-pendants in this Super Visa application. Only their spouse or common law partner is eligible to accompany them under this provision. Visa officers consider several factors before deciding if a person is admissible as a visitor. The person must be a genuine visitor to Canada who will leave by choice at the end of the visit. Among the things that could be considered are: the persons ties to the home country; the purpose of the visit; the person’s family and financial situation; the overall economic and political stability of the home coun-try; and an invitation from a Canadian host. In addition to being found admissible to Canada, the parent or grandparent must also provide a written commitment of finan-cial support from their child or grandchild in Canada who meets a minimum income threshold; prove that they have bought Cana-dian medical insurance coverage for at least one year; and com-plete an Immigration Medical Examination. Most applications for temporary resident visas are processed within a month or less. Processing times vary depending on the visa office. VISITORS WHO REQUIRE VISAS Applicants may need a temporary resident visa to visit Can-ada, depending on their citizenship. In order to obtain a Parent
and Grandparent Super Visa, they will need to submit an Applica-tion for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada [IMM5257] to the appropriate visa office and provide certain additional documents to support their application. Please check the CIC Web site for the list of countries that require visa before coming to Canada as a visitor. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp Applicants check the website of the visa office responsible for the country or region where they live for more information on fees, including how to pay them. To find the list of countries that visas are require see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp VISA EXEMPT VISITORS If the Applicant parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident whose citizenship exempts them from re-quiring a visitor visa to enter Canada, they are still eligible to benefit from the provisions of the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. Please check the CIC Web site for the list of countries that do not require visa before coming to Canada as a visitor. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp#exemptions If the Applicant would like to enjoy a two year authorized stay in Canada, and a ten-year multiple entry visa, they must submit an Application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Out-side of Canada [IMM5257] to the nearest visa office and provide additional supporting documents with the application. If the application is approved, they will be issued a letter to present to a Canada Border Services Agency officer at the port of entry when they arrive in Canada. The officer may authorize a visit to Canada for up to two years. It is important to note that Visitors from visa exempt coun-tries are not required to submit fees with their application for a Parent or Grandparent Super Visa. HOW TO APPLY The Applicant must provide proof that they have enough money for their visit to Canada. The amount of money may vary depending on the circumstances for the visit, how long they will stay and whether they will stay in a hotel, or with friends or rela-
tives. Applicants can get more information from the Canadian visa office in their country or region. The Applicant may need to include other documents. These documents could be identification cards, proof of employment, a letter of invitation from relatives or friends in Canada, or a pro-posed itinerary. Applicants should check the website of the visa office responsible for the country or region where they live for more information. Each individual applicant must complete and sign the Appli-cation for Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada (IMM 5257) form, as well as any other required forms. They can submit all family member application forms in the same envelope with one payment receipt for the total amount of all their applica-tions. Please note that as of January 15, 2011, older version forms are no longer be accepted. You must use the current Application for Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada [IMM5257] form. For questions regarding processing times, please check our estimated processing times on the CIC website. An application for a new single or multi entry visa normally must be done from outside Canada at a visa office. IN CANADA APPLICANTS Parents and grandparents, however, who are in Canada on an authorized stay of up to six months may apply for an extension of their status of up to two years by submitting an application to the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville, Alberta. They still must meet all the criteria for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visa. These applications will be examined on a case by case basis. For further information on inviting parents and grand parents and other relatives or friends to visit Canada please consult a qualified professional. Edward C. Corrigan is certified as a Specialist in Citizenship and Immigration and also Immigration and Refugee Protection by the Law Society of Upper Canada and practices law in London, Ontario.
