London and Area Council of Women: The London and Area Council of Women was founded onFebruary 14, 1894 as the Local Council of Women, London. In 1990, a motion was passed by theexecutive to change the name of the council from the London Council of Women (LCW) to theLondon and Area Council of Women (LACW). The objective of the council is, “To draw together thewomen of London in greater unity of thought, sympathy and purpose to further the application of theGolden Rule to society, for the development, improvement and happiness of mankind.” The logo ofthe council is a bow bearing the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would that they do unto you.”The LACW is comprised of individual members and members of its federated organizations whichinclude women's groups, service clubs and volunteer organizations. The president of each federatedorganization is named a vice-president of the LACW executive and has a single vote. The executiveof the LACW also includes a president, an executive vice-president and elected and appointedofficers who hold positions such as treasurer, secretary, registrar and standing committee officers.The LACW is part of a hierarchical organization of Councils of Women, answering to the ProvincialCouncil of Women of Ontario (PCWO) and the National Council of Women of Canada (NCWC). TheNCWC is a member of the International Council of Women (ICW).Throughout its history, the LACW has held regular meetings and organized events to encouragepolitical engagement, educate the public on various issues of importance to women, raise funds andpromote culture and heritage. In addition to this, the LACW has been active in lobbying themunicipal, provincial and federal governments. Fonds consists of records created and acquired by the London and Area Council of Women. Fondsincludes operational records such as minutes of meetings, financial records as well as materials thatwere distributed to members and federated organizations such as newsletters, annual reports andannual directories. Also included are records relating to the political activities of the council such asresolutions, briefs and submissions as well as project files and committee records. Some recordsdocument the history of the organization and its milestones and include newspaper clippings,scrapbooks, photographs and archives records. The fonds also includes records that were receivedby the LACW from its federated organizations, the Provincial Council of Women of Ontario, theNational Council of Women of Canada and the International Council of Women.

Scope and Content

The records of the London and Area Council of Women were in the custody of the organization'sarchives until they were deposited in the J. J. Talman Regional Collection in the 1990s. An additionaldonation was received in 2012.

Series consists of minutes and agendas kept by the London and Area Council of Women during thevarious meetings that they held including general meetings, officers and conveners' meetings,annual general meetings, and committee meetings. Several of the early minute books include newspaperclippings, flyers and other publicity materials which were pasted into them.

The records in this series include a list of the record books, a subject indexfile, the archives stamp and film strips of highlights from the archives and newspaper clippings thatwere shown at the Western Fair.
