Loihi Slide 2 Loihi plate boundarys Loihi rises about 6,000 feet above the sea-floor, which brings it very close to the surface. But you wont be making any immediate vacation plans to the next Hawaiian Island. At its present rate of ascension, scientists predict that Loihi will poke through the surface in about one million years. Slide 3 History There was at least one, possibly two eruptions at Loihi in 1996, based on radiometric dating of young lavas collected by manned-submersible from Loihi The summit of Loihi has undergone some drastic changes in 1996, including the formation of a third new pit crater and deposition of large quantities of glassy sands and gravels on the southern part of the summit platform New vents issuing the hottest waters ever observed at Loihi (up to 200 C) are present in the new pit crater The water column above Loihi has signatures of enhanced hydrothermal activity at or near the summit near the summit Slide 4 The Future Of Loihi In the future their saying Loihi will eventually merge on with the big island of Hawaii! It will create a so called super island!! Slide 5 The Impact? Their isn't that much of an impact except for eventually it will attach itself to the larger island but not for a great while (like another 250,000 years) so I would not be worried for anything bad to happen! Slide 6 Interesting Facts!!! Slide 7 Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980 and destroyed nearly 230 square miles of forest. The eruption lasted for 9 hours (picture at right). Vesuvius is famous for the eruption that happened in 79 A.D. It buried the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The eruption of Tambora in Indonesia in 1815 killed more people than any known eruption. Including those that died from contamination of water, disease and crop destruction, about 92,000 people died. Mt. Rainier looms over the Seattle/Tomoca area endangering a population of over three million people. Earth has more than 1,500 active volcanoes. The tallest volcano in the world is Ojos del Salado in Chile. It is 22,589 feet high. However, measuring from base to summit, the tallest would be Mauna Kea, which is more than 30,000 feet high when measured from its base on the ocean floor to its summit. There are five active volcanoes in Hawaii. They are Loihi, Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Haleakala. Hawaii is a volcano island because it was made by volcanoes. Mt. Kilauea in Hawaii has erupted 62 times in 245 years. Some eruptions have lasted a long time. The current eruption began in January 1983 and has been going on ever Slide 8 pics!!
