Lawn should be a central open space. Avoid using lawn on steep slopes.

Avoid lawn in hot and narrow areas. Avoid using lawn as a pathway.

Make the lawn a single defined shape, making the entire landscape appear

organized and well-maintained. Don’t break up the lawn with an island of plantings or the effect is ruined. Plus, watering grass around a

centralized flower bed is extremely hard to do efficiently. A central open space is simple and easier to maintain. Planting beds should

be drip irrigated.

Lawn is ideal for recreation and is best used on a flat surface. Lawn on slopes waste water and are hard to maintain.

Instead, plant slopes with flowers or shrubs and water them with drip irrigation.

Save the lawn for areas where it canbe enjoyed.

Wherever possible, keep lawn away from driveways and sidewalks. Lawn next to

hot surfaces requires more water to keep it happy, which leads to over watering

the entire landscape. Appropriately-sized plants in narrow areas increases water

efficiency and decreases maintenance. Save the lawn for areas where it counts.

Use hardscape materials for paths. Lawn makes a poor pathway surface—it needs

more maintenance and water to stay looking nice. Instead, use mulch, gravel or pavers for your pathways, filling in any leftover spaces with low-growing plants.

The journey will be far more invitingwhile also improving function and

reducing maintenance.
