The roots of this powerful region go as farback as 1826, when the first permanentEuropean settler arrived in present-dayLogansport. The settler, AlexanderChamberlain, began providing overnightshelter to travelers, establishing the area’shospitality and business-mindedness earlyon. Colonel John B. Duret proposed thatthe area be called Captain Logan in honorof a Shawnee Indian who had befriendedthe settlers, but Logan’s Port, in referenceto the town’s unique two-river border andnow popularly known as Logansport, seemed more fitting.
