Hello Logan Family,

I am excited for the start of my first year as your Logan HS Principal. I wanted to give you some background on

my career in public education and also tell you a little about myself outside of school.

I started teaching mathematics in the Tomah School District in 1992. I took a mathematics position at Logan

HS in 2001 (along with the head football coaching and other duties) and held those roles for 10 years. I be-

came Dean of Students in 2011, Associate Principal in 2014, and am humbled to have been selected to lead

Logan as Principal moving forward.

I love reading (both fiction and non-fiction), going to movies, traveling, and heading to my rustic cabin in Hay-

ward when I get a free weekend. My competitive athletic days are behind me (bocce ball, horseshoes, and

golf not withstanding), but I still enjoy hiking, working out, and appreciating the beauty of nature.

I have two step-children and six grandchildren from my first marriage and my wife Katie and I are expecting a

child in January. I am close to my mother and brothers (and their families) in Tomah and truly feel blessed to

have many wonderful friends, some of whom I have had since high school. Family and friends are a very im-

portant part of my life. I have lived on the north side of La Crosse since moving from Tomah and will continue

to live on the north side of La Crosse throughout my career.

I have a passion for public education and a tremendous respect for the educators and support staff who work

with our most precious commodity, our youth. I have loved being a Logan Ranger for 17 years and hope to

give Logan HS another decade of service before the end of my career. I will make mistakes along the way, but

when I make a decision, it will always be with the best intentions regarding the students of Logan HS in the

forefront of my mind.

My message to the students on the first day of school will be one of embracing opportunities. While in high

school, they will have access to experts at every turn. Teachers, counselors, support staff, future center staff,

school psychologist, school social worker, resource officer, and administrative staff, all of whose vast experi-

ence will be at your students’ fingertips. Encourage your students to USE these resources.

Part of high school for the students should be about finding their strengths and passions. The core areas of

high school will help prepare students for any path they take, but the choosing of electives is also extremely

important for a true exploration of what future plans and dreams they may endeavor to choose as they pro-

gress in life.

I am a huge proponent of athletics, activities, and the arts. I am a firm believer in students becoming involved

outside of the academic day. There are a vast amount of clubs, organizations, and activities for your student

to pick from. Each of these will help your student grow and give them the necessary skills to progress to a four

year university, two year college, apprenticeship, or immediate transition into the work force. It is the last

time in their lives where they will be able to choose so many things to explore for free (or nearly free).

Students and parents, I look forward to taking this journey with you.

It is a Great Day to be a Ranger !

The PLTW-Digital Electronics and Cisco Network-

ing classes at La Crosse Logan High School col-

laborated with CenturyLink, Industrial Automa-

tion, Niebuhr Plumbing, NECAL Corporation, and

Trane of La Crosse to design and build a Desalina-

tion System convert salt water into contaminant-

free water safe for drinking.

The Desalination Machine is a small/mobile, solar-

powered desalination system suitable for use in re-

mote areas where the electricity supply is unreliable or non-existent. It uses a humidifi-

er/dehumidifier concept to convert the salt water to clean drinking water. The system is

also outfitted with an ultraviolet light array to kill microbes in the water and a commu-

nication system to monitor and manage the unit. A Raspberry Pi micro computer with

camera is programmed to remotely view the telemetry.

The Desalination System was designed and fabricated at Logan High School in the

Technology and Engineering Department. CenturyLink,

Industrial Automation, Niebuhr Plumbing, NECAL Cor-

poration, Batteries + Bulbs and Trane provided materials,

technical support and helped define the parameters of the

project.

The project was made possible with a grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation (Randy and Judy Eddy Fund) which in recent years has supported class projects to build a remote-operated underwater vehicle, a

drone, a self-driving car and most recently a repetitive work exoskeleton.

in the Pledge of Allegiance. Guest senior speakers were Isabella Chase and

John Vue. Class of 2018, thank you for your contributions to Logan High

Logan Wall of Fame

For complete stories on this wall of famer, go to https://www.lacrosseschools.org/logan-high/wp-content/uploads/

In 1951, the same year that professor of Zoology

Dr. David R. Osborne graduated from Logan High, Patti

Page had a hit with “Mockin’ Bird Hill.” She sang, “Tra-

la-la, tweedlee dee dee, it gives me a thrill to wake up in

the morning to the mockin' bird's trill.” The life work of

Dr. Osborne has given avian lovers all over the world a

thrill as his insights have helped human understanding of

bird behavior, anatomy, and population structure. As an

Eagle Scout and a scholar, Dr. Osborne’s life has been de-

fined both literally and metaphorically by birds. It is ap-

propriate then, that he takes flight onto the Logan High

School Wall of Fame.
