WEEK 7: DEATALING STRATEGIES Define arches: curved structure for spanning and opening to support vertical loads through axial compression. (Ching, 2008) Define dome: spherical surface with a circular plan, stacked blocks, continuous rigid structure. Difference: circumferential forces; compressive at the crown and tensile near the bottom. Define shells: thin, curved plate. Transmits applied forces by membrane structures. Little bending resistance. MOISTURE AND THERMAL PROTECTION 1. Flashing: continuous sheet metal used to prevent passage of water into structure from angle of joint. 2. Parapet 3. Fascia: metal covering to conceal guttering. VENTILATION ISSUES: - Incorrect insulation type and installation - Environmental quality – pollutants managed, distributed and removed - Longterm issues – sick building syndrome

WEEK  7:  DEATALING  STRATEGIES    Define  arches:  curved  structure  for  spanning  and  opening  to  support  vertical  loads  through  axial  compression.

(Ching,  2008)      Define  dome:  spherical  surface  with  a  circular  plan,  stacked  blocks,  continuous  rigid  structure.  Difference:  circumferential  forces;  compressive  at  the  crown  and  tensile  near  the  bottom.    Define  shells:  thin,  curved  plate.  Transmits  applied  forces  by  membrane  structures.  Little  bending  resistance.        MOISTURE  AND  THERMAL  PROTECTION

1. Flashing:  continuous  sheet  metal  used  to  prevent  passage  of  water  into  structure  from  angle  of  joint.

2. Parapet

3. Fascia:  metal  covering  to  conceal  guttering.                VENTILATION  ISSUES:  - Incorrect  insulation  type  and  installation  - Environmental  quality  –  pollutants  managed,  distributed  and  removed  - Long-‐term  issues  –  sick  building  syndrome
