The square and compasses in Pathanamthitta.

It is a difficult exercise narrating the details of the events, in bringing the Square and Compasses

to Pathanamthitta, in a chronological order. However, care shall be taken to include all

important events in the formation of this new lodge under Trivandrum area after a long span of

10 years.

The long cherished desire of the Brethren living in and around Pathanamthitta was

accomplished with glory and triumph when the Lodge Sabaridesam No.374 was constituted and

consecrated on 30th

December 2011. This was achieved at the hands of the Most Worshipful

the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of India, M.W. Bro. Capt. Dr. Balaram Biswakumar OSM

and the Founder Master W.Bro. P.T.Mohan Babu was installed on to the Eastern Chair at the

hands of the R.W. the Regional Grand Master of the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India,

R.W. Bro. Retna Raj Sushil Raj. The Grand Lodge officers and the Regional Grand Lodge Officers,

Brethren of Lodges of Trivandrum Area and other visiting Brethren of various Lodges graced the

function with their presence. It was a memorable moment and left an everlasting feeling in the

hearts of the Founder Brethren of Lodge Sabaridesam going through the ceremony lead by the

M.W. the Grand Master and assisted by his team of Officers. This event is recorded as a red

letter day in the calendar of the Grand Lodge of India and as well as for the Lodge Sabaridesam.

Lodge Trivandrum No.168 has once again impelled yet another Lodge at Pathanamthitta. In

Kerala, every district head quarters has a Freemasons lodge established but the newest district

of Pathanamthitta was left off for some time. The Lodge Trivandrum No.168, spreading

Freemasonry to all quarters in the society, had sponsored and promoted Lodges viz. Lodge

Vivekananda No.254, in Kanyakumari and Lodge Ananthapadmanabha No.280, in

Thiruvananthapuram and thought it complimentary to sponsor yet another Lodge at

Pathanamthitta. W.Bro. Rajenesh Clement, the then Worshipful Master of Lodge Trivandrum

No.168, with much audacity, had undertaken to sponsor the lodge in Pathanamthitta under the

leadership of W.Bro. P.T. Mohan Babu as its Founder Master and Bro. B.V. Krishna Kumar as its

Organizing Secretary. The name of Lodge was aptly christened as ‘Lodge Sabaridesam’ by

W.Bro. Ashok Bhanuvikraman.

The name Sabaridesam was approved with elaboration for its great significance with respect to

the philosophy and teachings of Freemasonry. Sabaridesam appears to be quite a unique and

interesting name. According to Hindu mythology, Sabari was one of the women Saints in

Ramayana era; one of the three characters in Ramayana, whom Lord Rama redeemed and gave

salvation to. Sabari finds mention in whole sarge of Valmiki Ramayanam and in two slokas (56

and 57) of the Samskshipa (abridged) Ramayanam. Many years after the Ramayana era, when

King Rajasekara of Pandalam requested Lord Ayyappan to suggest a suitable place to construct

a temple in his memory, the latter aimed an arrow which landed on the hill known as Sabari hill

at the precise spot where the sage Sabari had fallen at the feet of Lord Rama and had been

reduced to ash as a result of developing the inner fire of yoga. The word ‘Desam’ meaning

province of a temple; thus Sabaridesam refers to the shrine or temple at top sabari hill, which is

now famous as the Sree Sastha Temple at Sabarimala, one of the hills located in Sabaridesam.

This in turn is now referred to as Pathanamthitta where this new Lodge has been warranted to

meet; hence Lodge Sabaridesam is meant to remind us of this great women sage of the Theta

Yuga, Sabari and the world renowned pilgrim centre of Sabarimala in Pathanamthitta district.

The formation of the Lodge at Pathanamthitta was greatly encouraged by R.W.the Regional

Grand Master of the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India, R.W.Bro. Retna Raj Sushil Raj. It

was correctly advised that more Brethren from Pathanamthitta be the majority in the Lodge

and it should benefit and function satisfactorily locally. Thereby more candidates who are just,

upright, of matured age, properly fit and living around Pathanamthitta, Punalur, Thruvilla and

Konni were proposed, initiated, passed and raised in various Lodges viz: Lodge Trivandrum,

Lodge Aruvi, Tenkasi, Lodge Palai and Lodge Vanchinadu, Kollam to become founder members

of Lodge Sabaridesam. The support was remarkable and it was acknowledged that all lodges of

this area had extended in the fulfillment of Lodge Sabaridesam. The cooperation and

enthusiasm of Lodge Trivandrum was the cause of the success in overcoming of the

complication of the consecration of the Lodge within the stipulated time.

The zeal for the institution of freemasonry and attachments had induced few members of

Lodge Trivandrum, Lodge Ananthapadmanabha, Lodge Travancore, Lodge Aruvi, Lodge Palai

and Lodge Vanchinadu and brethren of Pathanamthitta to subscribe as Founder members of

Lodge Sabaridesam. In all 32 brethren had signed in forming a solid foundation on which Lodge

Sabaridesam rests. We are honoured and privileged to have the M.W. Bro. Capt. Dr. Balaram

Biswakumar OSM, M.W. the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of India, R.W. Bro. Retna Raj

Sushil Raj, the R.W. the Regional Grand Master of the Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India,

R.W. Bro. H.H. Marthanda Varma and R.W. Bro. M.Ramaswamy Iyer as Honorarary Members of

Lodge Sabaridesam.

The Lodge, at its initial stage, was nurtured by many of the visiting Brethren of Lodge

Trivandrum, Lodge Travancore and Lodge Ananthapadmanabha to grade the excellence of the

rituals to the Brethren of Lodge Sabaridesam. We had the honour of having the presence of

W.Bro. Dr. P.Balachandran Nair ARGM of our Area, R.W. Bro. A. Gopalan Nair P.Dy.R.G.M and

R.W.Bro. D. Santhi Kumar P.Dy.R.G.M and Pres.R.G.Bd, all eminent stalwart Freemasons of The

Regional Grand Lodge of Southern India and the Grand Lodge of India and of W.Bro. B.P.

Dinesh, the Worshipful Master of Lodge Trivandrum as a well-wisher and greeted and wished

the brethren well. We had also received many visiting Brethren to witness or to take part in

portions of our ceremonies. Their presence at various Lodge meets were glorious and gracious

and had induced the advancement in the Brethren, the mysteries and privileges of Freemason.

Lodge Sabaridesam No.374 had its consecration ceremony held at Thruvananthapuram

Masonic Hall and thereafter, moved to a suitable place in Pathanamthatta for the second

meeting onwards. The Lodge regularly met and the attendance was more than 60% on an

average. The Brethren of Lodge Sabaridesam residing at Trivandrum, Punalur and elsewhere

frequently attended the Lodge meetings. During the year 2012, the Lodge had initiated 10 new

members into the mysteries and privileges of Freemasonry and had also done one rising and 4

passing too. The present strength of the Lodge is 42. The Universal Brotherhood Day was

celebrated with family members and guests in grand gala. R.W.Bro. A. Goplan Nair was our

Chief Guest for the day.

The installation of W.Bro. Ashok Bhanu Vikraman for the year 2012-13 was solemnized by the

Asst. Regional Grand Master of the Regional Grand Lodge of Sothern India, W.Bro. Dr.

P.Balachandran Nair, in a most impressive ceremony. During the year 2012-13, we are proud

that there are 5 ruling W.Masters of various lodges who are Founder members of Lodge

Sabaridesam Viz. W.Bro. Ashok Bhanuvikrman of Lodge Sabaridesam , W.Bro. P.J. Pratab of

Lodge Aruvi Tenkasi, W.Bro. B.N. Mohan Kumar of Lodge Tranvancore Trivandrum, W.Bro.

C.P.Narayanan of Lodge Mount Charity Chennai and Master Elect Bro.Dr. R.Prakasam of Lodge

Trivandrum. It is notable in the history of Freemasonry to achieve such a mark.

The growth of Lodge Sabridesam is evident from the zeal and enthusiasm in their vision of a

Temple of their own and the process to acquiring suitable land and to build it in short span of

its existence.

The Lodge Sabaridesam had participated in the pet project of the Grand Lodge of India which is

“Jyothirgamaya”. And with sympathy and compassion, the Lodge visited the home for Caring

for the Destitute and Disabled women ‘Sehatheeram’ at Vilakkudi, Punalur with donations and

kindness.

The Lodge Sabaridesam is looking forward and envisages greater heights in its rituals and

ceremonies, brotherhood and fellowship and above all, the distinguishing character of every

Freemason’s heart - that is, Charity.
