Summary

The Locust Point Harbor Park will be a public water recreation park and sustainable water filtration center. It will be located adjacent to the Hull Street Park Water Taxi stop near the Under Armour Headquarters. People will be able to swim and learn about the Baltimore Harbor’s ecosystem.

The Problem

● The Baltimore Harbor is an underutilized and heavily polluted resource

● Water drainage infrastructure is in need of repairs and redesign

● Baltimoreans and visitors to the city cannot interact with water in a direct way

History of the Harbor

In the 18th century, the Baltimore Harbor was an industrial center for shipbuilding, oyster canning, and steel. Redevelopment began in the 1950s to make the harbor what it is today.

Flexibility, Simplicity, & Replicability

This park is designed specifically for Locust Point, but many other cities, such as Boston, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, could benefit from similar projects. Few cities have harbors that are clean enough to swim in. Harbor Parks with filtering and cleaning capacity could be installed in these harbors.

Timeline

● 2020: Harbor becomes swimmable● 2022: Designs finalized, permits obtained ● 2023-2024: Construction● 2025: Opening of the park
