Tell Us about Your Dive Adventures

See ‘Dues’, page 4

Please come to our May 14 meeting and tell us about your recent diving adventures. Several of us recently finished a week-long live-aboard dive trip on the sailing ship, the Juliet, in the southwestern Bahamas.

What have y’all been up to? Bring any video and pictures you have of recent trips and we can view them at the meeting. Hopefully, Bob might have some of the Alexander Springs trip, Al and Nancy from the Devils Den trip, etc.

$$$Dues Were Due!

We gather at 6:00 p.m.. Afterwards, we hold our “formal” meeting covering CLUB business and member trip reports, followed by our great door prizes.

We meet at TGI Friday’s, which is located at 8955 International Drive, Orlando FL 32819 (phone 407-903-9556). It’s easy to get to via Interstate 4 or the Beach-line, between Sand Lake Road and the latter.

It’s that time of year to come up for a Surface Interval Time (SIT) and join us at our regu-lar Club meeting at TGIF on May 14th. We will be electing our 2013 slate of officers and members of the Board. In the April newsletter and subsequent

emails to the members, we opened up the nomina-tion process to Club members and accepted nomi-nations from all Club members via email. The email nominations process was closed as of April 20th.

Those nominations have been compiled and are incorporated in the ballot that every member should have received via email.

As per the bylaws, additional nominations will be accepted from the floor during the regular Club meeting on May 14th. That is why is it important that you attend the May meeting so that you are aware of the most up to date list of candidates for

the Board. Please make every effort to attend the meeting and cast your vote in person for President, Vice President, Secre-tary, and Treasurer. We will also be voting for three additional Board members who are elected at large.

Your active participation is requested to ensure you are represented in the election process. Remember, these are the people you are choosing to represent your interests in the Club and are responsible for arranging a great dive schedule each year.

The May election meeting is one of the most important meetings of the year, so please join us and support your candidate at TGIF on May 14th.

Dues, from page 1 President’s ColumnGreetings fellow divers and welcome to May! I

hope you all are ready for nice weather, calm seas, and great vis, because that’s what this time of year has in store. At least, that’s how it plays out in my fantasy. Join us in thinking positively and we’ll see what happens.

Our club dive this month is with Captain Luis Roman and leaves from Lantana FL, heading for the wrecks and reefs off of Boynton Beach. A relative-ly short drive from Orlando, this dive is not to be missed. Luis limits the boat to six divers, so there’s always plenty of room aboard. You have the op-tion of diving Saturday the 25th and/or Sunday the 26th. Check the flyer in this month’s newsletter for details. Give me a call and I’ll get you signed up. What can be easier?

On a more serious note, I need to let you all know that due to increased work and family obliga-tions I will not be running for re-election as your Club president this year. I have greatly enjoyed the honor of leading the Club the past 2 years, but I feel it is time to pass the torch to someone with fresh ideas and new dreams. I want to thank our wonderful Club officers, directors, and committee

chairs, whose help and support made the job easier; Al, Nancy, Mike; and our directors; both Bills, Dar-rell; Trevor and the Comstocks; all are working long and hard to bring off the Club’s successes.

I firmly believe that our Club is positioned for future success. The only ingredient missing is YOU! That’s right, you. You’re probably think-ing - as I did 2-plus years ago - that I need to help out, share the load, contribute to the group, and not just go along for the ride. I know . . . you don’t have the time, can’t speak in front of a group, and on and on. Those were my thoughts, and I suspect the thoughts of everyone who has ever volunteered for the job. What I discovered to my surprise was that I grew with the position, and my original fears never materialized. The group participation makes it a pleasure, not a chore; and best of all, I was never alone. We have a great cast of characters (and I mean characters!) to help, consult, and gather advice from. Believe it or not, the skills I learned have also helped at work. So it’s a ‘win-win’; give a little, gain a lot!

Finally, I want to thank everyone for making my two terms such a pleasure. Thanks for the memo-ries!

Mike

You’ll want to get your dues in so you can enjoy all the excit-ing dives and activities that the Club has planned for you this year. Dues are still only $20 per year ($15 if you are a current DAN member), with an extra $5 if you want newsletter by snail-mail instead of email; and can be paid by cash or check. Make checks out to “Martin Dive Club” and mail to our Treasurer:

Al Wileden 564 Pleasant Grove Drive Winter Springs FL 32708

OR - Save a stampNEW this year is an option to pay your dues

through PayPal. If you have a PayPal account or would like to set one up, you have the option of sending an email to [email protected] with your $20 (or $15 if you are a DAN member). What could be easier?

Remember that your Club membership dues are due on 31 March. If dues are not received by April 30, your membership will expire, and you will not be eligible for membership again for 1 year without paying a Lapse Penalty Fee of $10 plus 1 year’s prorated dues.

Dues, from page 1 ALSO NEW this yearSince things change for members, the Board

is requesting that you fill out a registration form this year when you pay your dues. The form has changed somewhat (example: Are you a DAN member, number of dives you have completed, and date you were certified). Some of the information will help the Club offer discounts and incentives throughout the year. More information on those to come in future newsletters. Please take the time to complete the form and email back to me with your dues. Thanks for your assistance in making sure our database is the best it can be.

April Meeting

Caradonna Dive Adventureswith Amy Garrow

Come to our April 9 meeting to see and hear Amy Garrow of Caradonna Dive Adventures as she describes how to get the most from your dive travels. She will speak briefly about several desti-nations in her global overview on planning a dive vacation.

Amy has about 500 dives logged and is an advanced open water diver. She has been working with Caradonna Dive Adventures for 14 years and has been fortunate enough to have traveled all over the world, including Micronesia, Polynesia, Indo-nesia, Fiji, Malaysia, Maldives, and many islands in the Caribbean and Central America.

Amy graduated from Lake Brantley High School in 1987 and then went on to McConnell Travel School in Minneapolis MN. After that, she

worked in various rolls within the travel industry (Northwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, leisure travel agent, car rental agencies) until she finally found her true passion in selling a product she could put her heart and soul into every day and keep it chal-lenging and fun at the same time.

FWC to permanently waive license requirement for lionfish

harvestNews Release

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Media contact: Amanda Nalley, 850-410-4943

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on April 17 at its meeting near Tallahassee discussed waiving the commercial and recreational bag limit and the recreational license requirement for divers harvesting lionfish using certain gear.

In August 2012, the FWC put a temporary rule in place that waived the recreational fishing license requirement when targeting lionfish with a hand-held net, pole spear, Hawaiian sling or any other spearing device designed and marketed exclusively for lionfish. This temporary rule change also re-

moved any bag limits when recreationally or com-mercially harvesting lionfish. Prior to the change, recreational anglers could not catch more than 100 pounds of lionfish without being required to have a commercial license.

The temporary rule change expires Aug. 3.

The Commissioners will finalize the license waiver and the bag limit removal at their June meet-ing in Lakeland.

Lionfish are a nonnative, invasive species that negatively impact Florida’s native saltwater fish and wildlife. Currently, the most effective method of removing lionfish from Florida waters is by spear-ing or using a hand-held net. Removing the license requirements and bag limits will increase lionfish harvest opportunities.

For more on the proposal presented to Commis-sioners, visit MyFWC.com/Commission and click on “Commission Meetings.”
