The heart of central Scotland

In Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and The Forth Valley you can climb high mountains and cruise deep lochs, relive the bravest battles and the greatest novels, or immerse yourself in modern art and shop for the latest labels. In this special Year of Creative Scotland, you’ll discover an inspirational and varied region perfectly blending rich history, grand scenery and daring modernity.

Dumbarton sits at the mouth of the River Clyde, under an hour from Glasgow, its imposing castle perched on a volcanic rock with magnificent views towards Ben Lomond and across the Clyde. Less than 10 miles up the river is the charming esplanade and pier of Helensburgh where broad tree-lined avenues sweep down towards the Clyde. The pride of the town, The Hill House, is a masterpiece of renowned architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Discover Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park to the north – this huge, awe-inspiring landscape is a playground for outdoor activities both gentle and adventurous. Be entranced by lochs, glens and mountains in the same way asSir Walter Scott sensed the magic of this region which inspired him to pen The Lady of the Lake.

Breadlabane is a perfect base to experience the eastern half of the National Park, from the gentle pace of the SS Sir Walter Scott steamship cruising Loch Katrine to the airy heights of the mountain summits. In contrast, visit the lively town of Callander on the eastern edge of the park for teashops and shopping.

Just 15 miles from Callander in the heart of the country is the city of Stirling. Stirling Castle stands high above the cobbled streets of the

old ‘top of the town’. Discover the heroic life of William Wallace at the iconic National Wallace Monument which dominates the landscape. Soak up the views from the Castle Esplanade, or relive the battle at Bannockburn, scene of Robert the Bruce’s famous victory in 1314.

Back in the city centre, high street names are housed within the Thistles Shopping Centre, while The Stirling Arcade boasts a selection of independent retailers. You’ll find excellent transport links to nearby villages and towns where you’ll covet unique finds or head to Sterling Mills Outlet Shopping Village in Tillicoultry for famous brand names.

The picturesque county of Clackmannanshire sits east of the city where you’ll enjoy views from the Ochil Hills. Woodland trails within Dollar Glen lead to Castle Campbell while crashing waterfalls provide a highlight, particularly in autumn when golden hues spill across the landscape.

Further south, discover the historic town of Falkirk and a unique experience at the world’s only rotating boat lift, The Falkirk Wheel, which links the Forth & Clyde and Union canals. Another fantastic opportunity awaits you at the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, central Scotland’s steam railway attraction, which chugs along beside the Firth of Forth.

“I came here as a child and spent the next forty years wondering how I might come back to stay. The place speaks for itself but it is the people who make it. There is a welcome in these hillsides as warm as the autumn leaves. ”

“Having worked here for many years, I thoroughly enjoy the variety of animals at the safari park. The elephants are excited about their dream retirement home which will be completed during 2012, and the cheeky chimps continue to show their appreciation of us by throwing things at the boat. ”

Incorporating Falkirk and the ‘Wee County’ of Clackmannanshire, this part of the central belt offers a profusion of things to see and do for its size, from Falkirk’s historic town centre and the world’s first rotating boat lift to a rich and interesting textile heritage, and all within an hour from Edinburgh.

Falkirk was shaped by the Scottish industrial revolution and during this time the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals played a key role in transporting raw materials and finished products. In 2002, as part of the Millennium Link project to connect the two canals, the world’s first rotating boat lift was unveiled. The Falkirk Wheel allows boats to travel across Scotland from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea. After exploring the visitor centre you can climb aboard a boat in the basin to sweep cleanly through the air and take in the stunning surroundings.

While in Falkirk, experience Georgian life at the impressive mansion of Callendar House, which stands within the town’s attractive Callendar Park. This stunning historic house also incorporates a museum, a changing programme of contemporary art in the Park Gallery and you can even meet costumed interpreters on the top floor as part of the Forbes’s Falkirk exhibition, all for free. In the town centre, Falkirk’s two shopping centres, the Howgate and Callendar Square, house all the top high street names.

Adventure seekers should head east of the town to enjoy Polmonthill Ski Centre where the slopes offer skiing and snowboarding on floodlit slopes. Tuition is available for the less experienced and can be enjoyed all year round.

For a sense of nostalgia in Bo’ness, travel back in time and enjoy the romance of steam trains and diesel locomotives along the traditional Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway framed by historic buildings. Or visit Scotland’s oldest purpose-built picture house, the Bo’ness Hippodrome. Enjoy a taste of the golden age of film using 21st century technology in a beautiful pre-Art Deco building, which has been extensively renovated. This year the cinema celebrates its centenary with a year of events including the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema.

Celebrate the Year of Creative Scotland in Clackmannanshire, once a major player in Scotland’s textile industry, where fresh water streams bubbling down from the Ochil Hills powered mills and later, coalfields fed newsteam-powered machinery. Now the county is a hub of creativity with traditional crafts sitting alongside contemporary art – follow the Andy Scott Sculpture Trail through Clackmannanshireto uncover public art at its best.

Alloa’s Tower Trail is perfect for those wholove history, incorporating Sauchie Tower, Menstrie Castle, Clackmannan Tower, Castle Campbell and Alloa Tower. The trail retells the tales of characters who shaped the landscapeover time.

Did you know?

The Falkirk Wheel uses surprisingly little power even though it can carry up to 600 tonnes of floating vessels around 24 m in about 5 minutes.

You can see the car from Harry Potter and James Bond’s BMW 750 from Tomorrow Never Dies atthe Bo’ness motor museum.

The Ochil Hills is one of the most popular locations in the UK for fell running, where participants run across hilly terrain – the higher the gradient the better.

Loch Lomond, Helensburgh &West DunbartonshireJourney west to enter a peaceful setting defined by contrasts. Helensburgh &West Dunbartonshire hug the banks of the River Clyde, bordering Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and the region of Argyll. From fascinating shipping heritage to wildlife and a great selection of outdoor activities, this region never fails to entertain.

An air of mystery and romance await on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Immortalised in song, a whole host of artists have captured the essence of the loch using both traditional and more contemporary music. In such an inspiring setting, you are sure to uncover your own creativity.

The loch sits to the west of the National Park, an area conserved for all to explore and enjoy, and is ideal for walkers. The West Highland Way, Scotland’s first official long distance route, runs through the park, and has been challenging generations of visitors and locals alike.

Beginning in Milngavie and ending in Fort William, the route follows the shores of the loch with incredible views across to Ben Lomond, and follows Lowland moors and dense forest into the Highlands taking advantage of drove and military roads and disused railway tracks.

The full 95 miles is not for the faint hearted, particularly the Devil’s Staircase taking you tothe head of Glencoe. However, the reward is in the sense of achievement and incomparable scenery. Those looking for a shorter stroll can try just one stretch.

Getting active in the great outdoors couldn’t be easier around Loch Lomond, from cycling and sailing to fishing and climbing. Boats are available for hire and a variety of fish can be caught in the waters with tuition on offer.

At the foot of Loch Lomond you’ll find Balloch, home to Loch Lomond Shores which boasts great shopping and eateries, and the National Park Gateway Centre where you’ll find captivating interactive displays detailing the evolution ofthe park.

The water bus connects to several of the scenic villages which nestle on the banks of the loch, from the busy pier of Balmaha on the east bank across to the peaceful village of Luss on the west. Some 10 miles north, Tarbet is an ideal base for exploring by foot or bicycle while Inversnaid is a popular stay over for West Highland Way walkers.

The Victorian seaside town of Helensburgh is renowned for beautiful architecture. Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House is a fine example, built as a domestic home with original furniture, interior designs and attractive grounds. Considered the ‘Garden City of the Clyde’, the town is the perfect place to wile away an afternoon.

You can take a short boat trip out to the island Priory of Inchmahome, an Augustinian monastery dating from 1238,on the Lake of Menteith, the only ‘lake’ in a country of lochs.

The Trossachs Trail is a signposted driving route which links a host of indoor and outdoor attractions around a circular route.

The dramatic Duke’s Pass which links Aberfoyle to the Trossachs was built by Rob Roy’s arch rival, the Duke of Montrose.

Located to the north of Scotland’s first National Park, The Trossachs & Breadalbane marks the meeting ground for the Highlands and Lowlands where tall peaks tower over flat plains and crystal-clear lochs glimmer through the landscape. Villages nestle amid a wilderness of beauty spots and Callander and Aberfoyle provide a hub for visitorsall year round.

The Trossachs & Breadalbane is perfect for walkers who will enjoy some of the Munros and higher peaks in the area. You wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Breadalbane means ‘high country of Scotland’ in Gaelic. The Crianlarich area is home to the park’s tallest peak, Ben More, at 3,842 ft. Crianlarich is a good base for walkers where you’ll be met with a small, friendly Highland community which is easy to access by both road or rail.

For a less strenuous climb, Ben A’an is knownas a mountain in miniature, characterised bya distinctive pointed peak, stunning views and rocky summit. Look out of the historic SS Sir Walter Scott steamship sailing down Loch Katrine. Crystal-clear waters are a real feature of this landscape and the lochs, that include both Achray and Venachar, offer an excellent opportunity for fishing enthusiasts. A network of paths and trails lead across the Menteith Hills towards the Lake of Menteith where you’ll find breathtaking picnic spots as wonderful light brings the scenery to life.

Sir Walter Scott was inspired to write his famed poem The Lady of the Lake after visiting Loch Katrine with his family. See the magic brought to life first-hand as told by Scott in his vivid descriptions. You’ll instantly recognise the beauty that captured the imagination of this great poet who left behind a cultural heritage for all to appreciate. Why not explore the Trossachs Artand Literary Trail? Visit the Ruskin site at Brig o’Turk, follow in Sir Walter Scott’s footsteps

along the shores of Loch Katrine and then visit where Wordsworth fell in love at Inversnaid.

From the highest, open peaks to the shelter of the forest, visit Queen Elizabeth Forest Park to uncover year-round forest wildlife as you traverse by foot, bike or horseback. Introduce yourself to the park at the David Marshall Lodge Visitor Centre with its wildlife viewing station, hides, magnificent views and forest shop. This is the starting point for walking routes through the woods while a play park will keep the children entertained.

Breadalbane is home to the magnificent Fallsof Dochart, and the charming village of Killin.A famous landmark, this series of rapids is worth exploring and offers the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely day after strolling through the streets past charming cottages.

The artists’ studios across the Trossachs, Campsies, Falkirk and Ochil hills throw open their doors for nine days in June during the Forth Valley Open Studios event. Witness the creation of numerous artworks and even meet the artists themselves.

Feed your literary appetite at Off the Page, Stirling’s book festival, which features big names in the literary world and exciting workshops for children. Music lovers should head to the Callander Jazz and Blues Festival or the family-friendly Lomond Folk Festival. For an insatiable appetite, farmers’ markets are a great way to sample local produce from across the region and meetthe producers, while Scotfest in Alva packs in over 80 exhibitors of the finest local produce, live music, children’s entertainment, and outdoor activities into one day in September.

Scotland’s Star Quality!- A simple, impartial, consistent approach to quality

VisitScotland, under the Scottish Tourist Board brand, runs the star grading schemes which assess the quality standards of all types of accommodation and visitor attractions from castles and historic houses to garden centres and arts venues. We quality assure over 70 percent of the accommodation in Scotland and 90 percent of the visitor attractions – so wherever you want to stay or visit, we’ve got it covered. Each establishment is reviewed once a year. We do the hard work so you can relax and enjoy your holiday.

How does the system work?

Our advisors visit and assess establishments on up to 50 areas from quality, comfort and cleanliness to welcome, ambience and service. The same star scheme runs in England and Wales, so you can follow the stars wherever you go.

It should be noted that those establishments that fail to meet our minimum standards will not be awarded a star rating.

Graded visitor attractions

Visitor attractions from tourist shops and museums to leisure centres and tours are graded with 1 - 5 stars depending on their level of customer care. The focus is on the standard of hospitality and service as well as presentation, quality of shop or café (if there is one) and toilet facilities.

The promise of the stars: it is clean, tidy and an acceptable

standard

it is a good, all round standard

it is a very good standard, with attention to detail in every area

it is excellent – furnished using high quality materials, superb food where provided and friendly, professional service

an exceptional standard where presentation, ambience, food where provided and service are hard to fault

Establishments awarded gold stars have consistently achieved the highest levels of excellence within their star grading.

A consistent standard wherever you stay

We grade all types of accommodation from hostels, through to B&Bs and self catering properties to hotels grand and small. We even grade campus accommodation and parks offering holiday homes and camping. So whether you prefer to spend the night under canvas or the canopy of a four-poster bed, we’ll make sure you know the standard to expect.

VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance Scheme

You told us you wanted our star

awards to better reflect the aspects

which impact on your enjoyment

of your Scottish park holiday, so

we listened and now focus on

the things that you told us are

important to you.

This has resulted in changes to

the level of awards given to some

parks but you can still be assured

of the same high level of customer

service and all the facilities you’ve

become accustomed to from

Scottish Holiday Parks.

VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance Scheme

You told us you wanted our star

awards to better reflect the aspects

which impact on your enjoyment

of your Scottish park holiday, so

we listened and now focus on

the things that you told us are

important to you.

This has resulted in changes to

the level of awards given to some

parks but you can still be assured

of the same high level of customer

service and all the facilities you’ve

become accustomed to from

Scottish Holiday Parks.

Why not take a trip to the heart of Scotland, Stirling? Within easy reach by road and rail, Stirling is a must-see city with an impressive contrast of vibrant, cosmopolitian living and ancient, historic sites.

Be amazed by the stunning stronghold of Stirling Castle, step back into the world of the Royal Court and explore the apartments in the Castle’s Renaissance Palace restored to how they may have looked in the mid -1500’s. Feel the spirit of Scotland at the National Wallace Monument or at Bannockburn, the site of her famous victory in 1314.

As well as bursting with history, Stirling is packed full of things to do. Stirling is a hub of contemporary culture, from music and theatre to dance and art. There’s a wide range of events, including Highland Games, pipe band processions and historical re-enactments. The fascinating Smith Art Gallery and Museum has loads to see, including the world’s oldest football!

Stirling is a compact city, not only easy to get to, but small enough to walkaround. Enjoy great shopping facilities, from modern retail centres to a Victorian arcade; a farmers market to elegant boutiques, sample some superb local produce in one of the many cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Be inspired by Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.Stirling is the stunning gateway to the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, home to some of Scotland’s most inspirational and dramatic scenery. The rugged and varied landscapes are ideal for outdoor adventures, from walking and cycling to watersports and fishing.

The Hippodrome is 100Scotland’s first purpose built cinema, a stunning pre-art deco picture palace dating back to 1912, restored and re-opened, with the latest projection and sound equipment, a friendly welcome, and screening the best major releases, independent films and classics.

Designed by local architect Matthew Steele (1878-1937) and opened on 11 March 1912, the Hippodrome was a close collaboration between Steele and owner/ manager Louis Dickson (1880-1960). Dickson was a showman and keen cameraman. Many of Dickson’s films still survive and are preserved in the Scottish Screen Archive.

We are celebrating the Hippodrome’s 100th birthday in 2012, with a year-long programme of special screenings, workshops, events and community projects.
