Loch Lomond &The TrossachsNational ParkLoch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is recognised, protected and promoted for its unique and ancient natural beauty. Make the most of 2013, the Year of Natural Scotland and explore these wonderful landscapes with a fantastic range of recreational activities and educational events on offer.
A jewel at the centre of the Scottish heartlands, Scotland’s first National Park is made up of four areas, three of which are in this region – the Trossachs, Breadalbane and Loch Lomond. The striking Argyll Forest Park is also easily accessible at the western edge of the National Park and is part of neighbouring region, Argyll & The Isles.
To the west, Balloch Castle Country Park features parklands, loch-side walks and a walled kitchen garden, formerly used for cultivating fruit and vegetables. From Balloch you can take the West Loch Lomond Cycle Path, a beautiful 17-mile cycleway and footpath which heads north to Tarbet.
The route also takes in scenery from the picturesque conservation village of Luss, where you can hop aboard a boat. The Loch Lomond Water Bus stops at 12 destinations, and is a
wonderful way to tour the loch. One of Loch Lomond’s islands, Inchcailloch, is well worth a visit, where you can climb to the summit and admire views across the National Park.
Loch Lomond’s eastern shore is hugged by the West Highland Way, a popular long-distance walking route which passes by on its 96 miles route from Milngavie, just outside of Glasgow, to Fort William.
On the Highland Boundary Fault, which separates the mountainous Highlands from the plains of the Lowlands, you’ll find Aberfoyle and the Trossachs Discovery Centre, which has information on local walks, cycle routes, events and festivals. Witness the area’s amazing wildlife by taking the Trossachs Bird of Prey Trail, and get even closer at the David Marshall Lodge where you can watch live CCTV footage of nesting ospreys.
Breadalbane marks the beginning of the Highlands at the northern tip of the National Park. The Crianlarich peaks and Ben Lawers mountain range towers above this majestic landscape. Relax in the sleepy villages, soak up the marvellous scenery and look out for ospreys. Why not watch the cascading white waters of the magnificent Falls of Dochart from the bridge at Killin, explore the new heritage trail and unwind with a picnic?
Walking is an ideal way to embrace all the park has to offer in the Year of Natural Scotland but you can also journey by bicycle and even horseback. Water activities in the park are second to none and include canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, water skiing and fishing.

Though thoroughly a modern city today, Stirling has played a major historical role in Scotland’s story. It was once an ancient capital in the country due to its strategic position on top of a volcanic plug and at the junction of the Highlands and Lowlands. A favoured home of the mighty Stuart kings, Stirling Castle is visible for miles around, etched into the skyline.
Great Scottish heroes rallied their armies to fight for the independence of Scotland though the castle was besieged many times. You can see seven different battle sites from the castle, including the 1297 Battle of Stirling Bridge fought by William Wallace, and the Bannockburn battleground where Robert the Bruce achieved his historic victory.
Stirling Old Town Cemetery is also of historical importance to the city, featuring many headstones and monuments dating as far back as 1579. Whilst exploring the Old Town, dare to take a gruesome tour of the Stirling Old Town Jail. Watch out for the convict as you delve into dark tales of crime, punishment and disease.
Just north of Stirling in Bridge of Allan, visit the Allan Water Brewhouse to learn the art of preparing traditionally-crafted ales before sampling a pint yourself. While you’re here, shop in the wonderful array of interesting boutiques for a unique souvenir to take home. Head north to Dunblane and visit the town’s striking medieval cathedral, established in the 12th century and one of only a few of its kind surviving in Scotland.
The village of Doune is just 10 minutes west of Dunblane, with its imposing courtyard castle which was a favoured royal hunting retreat and is popular with fans of Monty Python, which was filmed at the castle. Nearby, wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy watching the red kites at Argaty.
Bring the family along to the award-winning Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park, where you can spot lions, tigers and giraffes. Take a boat trip to Chimp Island, watch the captivating sea lion show and marvel at the bird of prey displays.

Falkirk was shaped by the Scottish industrial revolution and during this time the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals played a key role in transporting raw materials and finished products. In 2002, as part of the Millennium Link project to connect the two canals, the world’s first rotating boat lift was unveiled, allowing boats to travel across Scotland from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea. After exploring the visitor centre at The Falkirk Wheel, you can climb aboard a boat in the basin to sweep cleanly through the air and take in the remarkable surroundings.

The county is now a hub of creativity with traditional crafts sitting alongside contemporary art – follow the Andy Scott Sculpture Trail to observe public art at its best.
Explore Clackmannanshire’s charming scenery and nature at Gartmorn Dam. Celebrating its 300 year anniversary, Gartmorn Dam is the oldest reservoir in Scotland and is now a peaceful retreat for walking, cycling, horse riding and fishing. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an important site for migratory wildfowl in the winter months as well the birds which breed here in the summer.

Journey west to enter a peaceful setting defined by contrasts. Helensburgh and West Dunbartonshire hug the banks of the River Clyde, bordering Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park and the region of Argyll. With an interesting shipping heritage, exciting wildlife and an impressive selection of outdoor activities, this region never fails to entertain.
Loch Lomond is the largest freshwater loch in the UK and one of over 20 large lochs in the park, which is complemented by a number of smaller lochs and lochans. You can experience a bird’s-eye view of Loch Lomond as you soar above the landscape aboard a unique seaplane, or explore the area by foot and take the West Highland Way, Scotland’s first official long-distance route.
Beginning in Milngavie and ending in Fort William, the full 95 miles is quite a challenge, particularly the Devil’s Staircase, which takes you to the head of Glencoe. However, the reward is in the sense of achievement and incomparable scenery. Those looking for a shorter stroll can try just one stretch, following the route along the shores of Loch Lomond with incredible views across to Ben Lomond.
Getting active in the great outdoors couldn’t be easier around Loch Lomond, with cycling, sailing, fishing and water skiing. Boats are available for hire and a variety of fish can be caught in the waters with permits and tuition on offer.
At the foot of Loch Lomond you’ll find Balloch, home to Loch Lomond Shores which boasts fantastic shopping and eateries, and the SEA LIFE Aquarium, where you can visit Scotland’s only giant pacific octopus. Visit the Bird of Prey Centre where you can meet Orla, the golden eagle.
The water bus connects to several of the scenic villages which nestle on the banks of the loch, from the busy pier of Balmaha on the east bank across to the peaceful village of Luss on the west. Some 10 miles north, Tarbet is an ideal base for exploring by foot or bicycle while Inversnaid is a popular stay over for West Highland Way walkers.
Helensburgh is renowned for Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Hill House, built as a domestic home in attractive grounds which still boasts the original furniture and interior designs. This picturesque town is the perfect place to while away an afternoon.
Soak up the stunning views from Dumbarton Castle, spectacularly sited on volcanic rock overlooking the River Clyde. Once the ancient capital of Strathclyde, you can spot the peak of Ben Lomond from the White Tower Crag.

Located to the north of Scotland’s first National Park, the Trossachs & Breadalbane marks the meeting ground for the Highlands and Lowlands where tall peaks tower over flat plains and crystal-clear lochs glimmer through the landscape. Villages nestle amid a wilderness of beauty spots and Callander and Aberfoyle provide a hub for visitors all year round.
The Trossachs & Breadalbane is perfect for walkers who will love bagging some of the Munros and higher peaks in the area. The Crianlarich area plays host to the park’s tallest peak, Ben More, at 3,842 ft and is easy to access by both road or the West Highland Railway.
For a less strenuous climb, Ben A’an is known as a mountain in miniature, characterised by its distinctive pointed peak, gorgeous views and rocky summit. Crystal-clear waters are a real feature of this landscape and the lochs, which include both Achray and Venachar, offer an outstanding opportunity for fishing enthusiasts.
Sir Walter Scott was inspired to write his famed poem The Lady of the Lake after visiting Loch Katrine with his family. Admire the beauty surrounding the loch that captured the imagination of this legendary poet, who left behind a cultural heritage for all to appreciate. Why not take the Trossachs Art and Literary Trail? Visit the Ruskin site at Brig o’ Turk and follow in Scott’s footsteps along the shores of Loch Katrine before heading to the Brenachoile Café.
From the highest open peaks to the shelter of the forest, visit Queen Elizabeth Forest Park to uncover
year-round forest wildlife as you traverse by foot, bike or horseback. Introduce yourself to the park at the David Marshall Lodge Visitor Centre with its wildlife viewing station, hides, grand views and forest shop.
For a delightful shopping experience, visit the peaceful village of Aberfoyle which is home to the Scottish Wool Centre where you can purchase local produce and watch shepherds and their working dogs in action. In the lively town of Callander, visit the Scottish Real Ale shop located at the Lade Inn, an old converted microbrewery housing beer from across Scotland. The Callander Heritage Trail is a fantastic way to learn about the people who shaped the town.
Breadalbane is home to the charming village of Killin. You can visit the magnificent Falls of Dochart, the mystical healing stones of Saint Fillan, and the MacNab Burial Ground, where you can see the graves of legendary chiefs. Head to the Killin Outdoor Centre and Mountain Shop to hire a range of outdoor equipment including canoes and bikes and receive useful local advice on the area.

Practical informationNow is the time to choose yourholiday accommodation
This guide has been split into five sections for the following accommodation categories:
• Hotels and Inns• Guest Houses and B&Bs• Self Catering• Camping and Caravan Parks• Hostels/Activity Accommodation
Establishments are listed within these sections in alphabetical order by location and then by business name. Each entry has a map reference (see example) relating to the map which appears on pages 80-81 of this guide. The map is helpful if you don’t know where a particular town is in relation to the area that interests you. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location online and with the operator before making your journey. Some listings have a distance beside the location; this indicates the approximate road distance in miles from the location. These mileages are voluntary provided by the businesses themselves.
BookingAccepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately. Online bookings are also subject to terms and conditions, please check direct with the provider for these.
Insurance and cancellationsShould you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip.
PricingThe prices of accommodation, services and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Please note that prices include VAT where applicable and are for your guidance only (VATas at December 2012). Please check prices when you book accommodation and confirm exactly what the quoted price includes.
SmokingThe majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés, are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and guest houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so.
To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directlywhen booking. For further information, visitwww.clearingtheairscotland.com
ü Look out for the short breaks symbolLoch Lomond & The Trossachs and The Forth Valley offers a fabulous range of quality assured accommodation as listed on pages 28-72. Establishments which display the above symbol offer short breaks. Contact them direct for current special offers or to make a booking.
E Assistance DogsThe new Equality Act 2010 protects anybodywho has or has had a disability and peoplewho experience discrimination because theyare linked or associated with a disabled person. In respect of assistance dogs the law quite clearly states that to refuse admission to a registered assistance dog is now unlawful and constitutes discrimination under the Equality Act 2012 under three possible categories: 1: discrimination arising from a disability; 2: indirect discrimination and3: disability harassment. VisitScotland is committed to equality of opportunity and is working through its Accessible Tourism Project
to educate and inform all our customers about the requirements under the law. We have encouraged all our business customers to use the assistance dog symbol in order to comply with law, or make it clear in a statement that they welcome all assistance dogs. It is always advisable to check with each establishment prior to booking.
v Hearing LoopInduction loop and infrared systems help people with hearing loss hear more clearly by reducing the effect of background noise. When a building has been fitted with a loop or infrared system, you will usually find this mentioned in their adverts, newsletters and at the entrance to the building. Informative signs and symbols should be displayed such as the loop sign above, it is always worth asking if it is not obvious. Please note this iconis not verified by VisitScotland Quality and Standards Department.

VisitScotland introduces our Holiday Parks Quality Assurance Scheme
You told us you wanted our
star awards to reflect the
aspects which impact on your
enjoyment of your Scottish park
holiday, so we listened and now
focus on the things that you
told us are important to you.
This has resulted in changes
to the level of awards given to
some parks but you can still
be assured of the same high
level of customer service and
all the facilities you’ve become
accustomed to from Scottish
Holiday Parks.
