Mobile banking is a great feature that is easy to use and a convenient way for customers to access their accounts. Customers are able to quickly view balances, make transfers and pay bills on their mobile device. However, mobile banking has also become an avenue of theft for fraudsters. Two recent publications regarding mobile banking fraud address Svpeng and Dyreza. Svpeng targets users through text messaging. The text contains a link for an app which, upon installation, infects the mobile device. It is considered to be a ransomware app for Android devices which searches for mobile banking apps on the device. It then locks the device and demands money to unlock it. Svpeng also has the capabilities of spoofing legitimate banking apps, stealing personal banking information, capturing user input (including passwords), sending SMS text messages to premium numbers resulting in charges, stealing SMS text messages, contact info and pictures, as well as tracking user location. Dyreza is spread through spam e-mail messages that contain a zip file. Opening this file then enables the mobile banking app to be re-directed to a site that the end user thinks is legitimate. Please note, both of these types of malware require the end user to take some sort of initial action to infect the device. Following are some tips to prevent mobile malware: Install an antivirus app and keep it updated Avoid installing apps from third-party websites or unreliable sources Read the permissions requested by every application before installing Perform regular backup of data stored in devices Protect devices with a password Never view or share personal information over a public Wi-Fi network Financial institutions are required to take the utmost care when it comes to protecting customer data, but that does not eliminate the need for customers to take precautions to protect their devices as well. Debit cards and checkbooks should always be kept secure. Any devices used to access account information should be kept patched and have the adequate software installed to prevent the presence of malware. Please stay aware of the risks so you can help mitigate them. Mobile Banking Malware MEET THE STAFF

Dyreza is spread through spam e-mail messages that contain a zip file. Opening this file then enables the mobile banking app to be re-directed to a site that the end user thinks is legitimate. Please note, both of these types of malware require the end user to take some sort of initial action to infect the device.

Following are some tips to prevent mobile malware:• Install an antivirus app and keep it updated• Avoid installing apps from third-party websites or unreliable sources• Read the permissions requested by every application before installing• Perform regular backup of data stored in devices• Protect devices with a password• Never view or share personal information over a public Wi-Fi network

First Federal Savings Bank staff participated in the 12th annual Parkview Huntington YMCA Battle of the Businesses. The competition consisted of two weekends with various activities, including sand volleyball, kickball, bowling, cornhole, canoe races and many other fun events. First Federal earned first place in the “C” Division (meaning less than 100 employees) and will be awarded a traveling trophy to keep until next year’s Battle. All funds raised in the Battle benefit the Parkview Huntington YMCA.

Joe Cavacini, of First Federal Savings Bank, was awarded a diploma on August 15, 2014, at commencement exercises during the 70th annual session of the prestigious Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, finishing in the top 10% of his class.

The School, sponsored by state bankers associations from across the central United States, as well as the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was established in 1945 to provide bankers with an opportunity for advanced study and research in banking, economics and leadership. Instruction at the Graduate School of Banking takes place during two-week resident sessions for three consecutive summers, along with comprehensive study between summer resident sessions. The curriculum focuses on the management of strategic issues faced by banking executives and financial services industry professionals.

The Graduate School of Banking enrolls approximately 575 US and international professionals each year. Over 85 esteemed academicians, economists, government officials, and industry professionals comprise the School’s faculty.

Joe joined First Federal Savings Bank in April of 2014 as the Vice President of Commercial Lending and Business Development Officer for the Fort Wayne market. Joe was a double major graduate from IPFW, earned an MBA from Indiana Tech and has over 20 years of financial experience.
