Tam O’Shanter Park Restoration work continues at Tam O’Shanter Park as well. After 200 trees were planted in 2020, the Natural Resources Department is now focusing on the prairie restoration work. This fall, acreage slated for prairie grasses will be installed in accordance with the park’s master plan. The Park District continues to be dedicated to keeping the park and trails open as the restoration continues.

Magnolia Mill A state capital grant was received last year which totaled $245,000 for the purpose of restoring the mill and updating the site surrounding the mill. Stark Parks, with the Village of Magnolia, will work to make the site as accessible as possible and build upon the great destinations in Magnolia. The project is 100% funded with a state capital grant, which previously allowed for the rehabilitation of the mill itself including a new roof, electrical work, and painting the front of the mill.

Fulton Road Tunnel A project for the installation of a pedestrian tunnel under Fulton Road, connecting the Jackson Township Parks, Stark Library – Jackson Community Branch on the north with the Bog and Jackson High School to the south, has been funded through the transportation alternatives program through ODOT. This tunnel is on Stark Parks’ Trail and Greenway Master Plan and we are working with Jackson Township to update that trail route extending in both directions from the tunnel. Planning for this project is scheduled to continue through 2021 and into 2022 with construction starting in late 2022 under the current timeline.

News & Updates

Nimisilla Creek PreserveWork will start this summer on the forest restoration of approximately 200 acres of land. Tree species were selected to create habitat for migratory birds and bat species and funds for the project were 100% provided by the WRRSP grant and The Conservation Fund. A Diversion Dam will help control the water levels on the property which will be critical for the pristine wetlands on site. There is no public access at this park at this time. The restoration work of the reforestation will likely carry through the end of 2021 and will promote the biodiversity of bird and bat species.

Fry Family Park Stark Parks was recently awarded $600,000 in Clean Ohio funding for the forest and prairie restoration at Fry Family Park. Additionally the development of a forest trail will be constructed and will connect with the existing trail system.

Walborn Reservoir Also funded through Clean Ohio was a $350,000 restoration project at Walborn Reservoir. This project will include prairie restoration, a new parking lot, trail and boardwalk system. The prairie work will be adjacent to an existing wetland restoration project.
