FOREWORD
MSME-DI, Chennai, Tamil Nadu is one of the field outfit of Office of Development
Commissioner, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (DC-MSME) established in
the year 1954 for implementing the various policies and programes of Ministry of MSME
towards entrepreneurship development in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises across the
State in liaison with State Govt. and other stake holders. This Institute covers 32 Districts in
the State of Tamil Nadu and UT of Puducherry. with the following mandate
� For Aspiring entrepreneurs : identify, motivate, train, handhold and provide mentoring services.
� For Existing entrepreneurs. To provide techno economic consultancy and facilitation service
� Skill Development: To impart need based skill training through Skill Development Programmes (SDP)
One of the vide spectrum of value added services of the Institute is to prepare a brief
district industrial profiles of each district for the benefit of aspiring and existing entrepreneurs
in the State of Tamil Nadu and other States
This report contains brief details of the District, geographical information, statistical data
relating to MSME’s of the district, registration under Udyog Aadhaar Memoramdum (UAM),
potential areas for investment in service sector and manufacturing sector, identified industrial
clusters, key contacts for whom to contact for what etc. .
The report has been prepared based on our earlier first edition report duly updated from
data/inputs collected by District nodal officers and from reports/publications of M/o. MSME,
Govt. of India and Govt. of Tamil Nadu, MSME Deptt.
Economic Investigation Division of the Institute has taken special efforts in collection
and compilation of the relevant data for preparing the document not only for the DINDIGUL District but for all the Districts of Tamil Nadu. My sincere thanks to all the officers of the
Institute for their cooperation in bringing out this brief industrial profile.
I am sure that that this document will be of much useful for the benefit of aspiring
and existing entrepreneurs who are desirous of setting up of MSMEs in the State of Tamil
Nadu in general and in the District of DINDIGUL in particular.

BRIEF INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF DINDIGUL DISTRICT
1.1 General Characteristic of the District.
Dindigul has extensive hilly and rocky
areas with undulating plains. Palani hills
forming Northern spur of the Western
Ghats ranging in height from 1000 to
2700 Meters. The upper plains with an
average height of 2500 mts comprise
valleys and contain several peaks like
Perumal Hill, the Vandarvey Hills etc.
They consist largely of plateaus made
up of rolling down covered with coarse
grasses and isolated jungle of peaks
from 1000 to 1700mts height, separated from one another by steep and beautiful
wooded valleys. Those hills are Thandigudi, Virupatchi, and palaniHillsetc. On the
eastern side Sirumalai, Alagar Malai and the Nathan and Ayyalur hills are found. A large
number of isolated peaks namely Karumalai, a sacred hill, tappering Kodarangimalai,
great rock of Dindigul, Ranagmalai etc., are also found.
The District boundaries are:
East: Sivaganga & Trichy Districts West: Theni, Coimbatore, Districts and KeralaState
North: Erode, Coimbatore, Dindigul, and Trichy Districts South: Madurai District
1.2 Location and Geographical Area:
The District was bifurcated from Madurai district on 15th September 1985. Dindigul town, which serves as the District Headquarters, has a rich historical background and located between 10o. 05’ and 10o. 09’ North latitude and 77o.30’ and 78o.20’ East longitude.

1.3 Topography:
Dindigul district is endowed with varied agro climatic conditionfrom semi arid to sub tropical supporting varied agro eco systems,conducive for the cultivation of wide range of agricultural andhorticultural crops.
Dindigul District is characterized by an undulating plains covered mostly by Red soil
85%. The upper plains have thick layer of black earth over yellow clay.

1.5 Forest
Forest covers 18.8% of the total area of the district forest naturally under three main formations, the mixed deciduous, the ever green and grass land. The natural vegetation is rich and varied. About 700 species accounting for 50-80% of the flour of the whole Indian peninsula have been identified in plain besides a large number of species peculiar to themselves.

3.INDUSTRIAL SECENARIO OF DINDIGUL DISTRICT The district is home to textile spinning industry. Chinnalapatti, which is located 11 kilometres from Dindigul, is known for its flourishing hand loom industry. Silk art, known as Sarees, and Sungudi produced in Chinnalapatti are well known throughout India. More than 1000 families are engaged in this industry. Nilakkottai town is known for Brass Vessels, Jewellery and also for flowers and Grapes. Ottanschatram is a noted market centre for vegetables. It is known for the export of butter, manufactured in the nearby villages using cream separators. Vathalagundu is a market centre for tomato. Pattiveeranpatti in Vathalagundu Block is known for Cardamom and Coffee enterprises.Nagal nagar area hundreds of Sourashtra community people are doing hand loom sarees manufacturing
. Dindigul is known for its leather tanning Industry.Tanneries are thickly situated in this District. The finished and semi finished leather and other leather products have a good export market.

Locks & steel safes made in Dindigul are known for good quality and durability. Locks manufacturing is operated as a co-operative sector
Locks manufactured here are sold to national and international markets. Dindigul locks — are likely to get Geographical Indication (GI) for establishing their place of origin. The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, through its research officers wing, has initiated steps to get GI Tobacco
Dindigul has been a centre of tobacco trade and a manufacturer of cigars from the time of British rule. A favorite cigar of Winston Churchill called Churut, the ‘Light of Asia’, was produced in Dindigul. The tobacco industry is one of the main sources of employment for the inhabitants of Dindigul.The central government has a research center for tobacco in vedasandur. This is one of the two centers in India, the other one is Rajmundri.

Dindigul is primarily an agro-based town of Tamil Nadu. About 70% of the total population earns their livelihood directly or indirectly through Agriculture. There are about 165 Rice mills in and around Dindigul. Famous flour mill Naga, Viskalakshi are located there. Anil Semia, Savorit Semia, Nandhini Saamburani industries are located in Dindigul. Dindigul city is an important wholesale market for Cotton, onions and groundnuts (peanuts). Panneer Grapes which is a special type of black grapes is specific to Dindigul.

3.2.1 UDYOG AADHAAR MEMORANDUM (UAM)
Govt. of India, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) has notified the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum(UAM) under the MSMED Act, 2006 vide gazette notification [SO No. 2576(E)] dated 18-09-2015 in order to promote ease of doing business for MSMEs. A one-page simple registration form for online filing of UAM has been introduced which replaces the filing of Entrepreneur’s Memorandum Part I & II. The filing of UAM can be done on www.udyogaadhaar.gov.in .Registration is online and user-friendly. UAM can be filed on self-declaration basis. No documentation required. No Fee for filing. Can file more than one Udyog Aadhaar with same Aadhaar Number. EM-I has been abolished. Need not file through Udyog Aadhaar. Udyog Aadhaar (UA) is for
running units. No need to apply for upcoming units.
