CSC Newsletter Winter/Spring 2019 Dear Supporter: Please help your community by supporting the Christian Service Center and participating in the 2019 Annual Spaghetti Dinner. Your contribution, along with those of other sponsors, will help the Christian Service Center continue to provide emergency services to local families in need. The Center helps every day with items like food, but CSC is also ready to help when catastrophe strikes. We are seeing a growing need for emergency assistance due to serious illness, leaving people unable to meet their rent or utility bills. NINETY-ONE CENTS (91 cents) of every dollar received is put back into the community giving those in need a “hand up”. This high rate of return on your gift is due to the Center being operated by an all-volunteer staff (which means there are no wages paid). Sponsors like you and your organization enable the Center to continue helping those in need in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan. Since the Christian Service Center opened in 1991: 30,262 clients have been seen; 36,488 children have been served; Over 1,805,000 meals have been provided. The Christian Service

Center is a “Hand Up”

rather than a “Hand Out”

agency.

Clients are given

immediate emergency

aid as well as guidance

on finding solutions to

their problems. The

CSC is a 100% volunteer

agency funded by the

churches of Pleasure

Island, various

community

organizations, including

the United Way of

Baldwin County, and

interested individuals.

For the fifth year in a row, the Church of God, a Worldwide Association met at the Orange Beach Events Center. The group desires to bless the communities where they meet and again chose the Christian Service Center as the recipient of their outreach. Each day of their meeting, the group collected food, household supplies, personal hygiene items, baby supplies, and cash donations for the CSC.

The CSC volunteers call the group the Visiting Angels. The gift from the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, is the single largest contribution to our food pantry – for the fifth year in a row. The group contributed 3,200 pounds of food and supplies. Their generous cash donation will allow the CSC to purchase more than 35,000 pounds of food from the area food bank! This contribution will be used to aid families in need in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan and will provide hundreds of meals.

Five years ago, when the Visiting Angels held their first meeting here, they were pointed towards the CSC by a city official. We are grateful for the generosity of everyone in the group meeting here and we are also grateful to our community officials for supporting us!

Highlighting a Special Volunteer Mrs John (Mary) O’Day

Always a shining light, always a positive outlook and for many years a volunteer of her time and energy, her many skills (especially computer), her selfless donation of materials, a sponsor for fundraisers; ultimately, a special volunteer for the Christian Service Center.

That’s Mary O’Day!

Mary has spent many years serving the CSC through the publication of newsletters, brochures, Power Point slideshows and business recognition cards for fundraisers, ie., Annual Spaghetti Dinners, etc.

Much appreciation and gratitude to a CSC volunteer and dear friend who has given so much love to her community through the Center.

Mary O’Day, we love you!

The Center conducts the Christmas Cheer Program for Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Fort Morgan families. The program provides clients with food boxes and gifts for their children.

The Christian Service Center is grateful for the community support of the 6th annual “Toys for Kids” event at Perdido Beach Resort organized by Wildflowers Boutique owners Terri Long and Candice Duncan. The Center expresses a heart-felt THANK YOU to all who contributed and

participated in a wonderful night full of fun for a great cause. Over $20,000 was raised so that the Center could provide Christmas gifts for the children of income qualified families in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Ft. Morgan. A special thank you to Perdido Beach Resort for sponsoring this event. A big thank you to our business supporters who provided auction items that made the event successful. Table sponsors were: Fedok Plastic Surgery; McCarron Insurance; Advanced Carpet; Southern Rapid Care; Coastal Physical Therapy; Community Health Systems; Angels Hair Salon; Zeke’s Marina; Angela Lewis Remax Team; and Crystal & Bill Tew.

The Christian Service Center is proud and thankful to have been gifted the property adjoining their current space at 317 Dolphin Way in Gulf Shores. This is due to the generosity of the Erie Meyer Charitable Fund, Inc. The Center's original property was also a gift from the Erie Meyer Fund in approximately 1999.

The vision for the future use of the new property is to add much needed additional parking, and to construct a large all-purpose building so that the Center can expand our services and improve our ability to serve the community.

The Erie Meyer Charitable Fund has been a vital and integral part of the development of the Christian Service Center since the Center's formation in 1991 by the Pleasure Island Ministerial Association.

A Huge THANK YOU to the Erie Meyer Charitable Fund

I am a 58 year old homeless man. I was born and raised around here, and I certainly haven’t always been homeless. Things changed for me after the loss of a loved one some years back. I have been staying one spot to another whenever I’ve been in the area lately. I came to the Center a few years ago and, y’all gave me a bike; the front tire wouldn’t hold air, but I fixed it, and was glad to have it. I came today because I had surgery recently and had prescriptions that I needed. The people at the Center were so kind and helpful. They paid for my medicine. They gave me a bike again, and I am so thankful to have transportation. And—they gave me batteries for my flashlight! They gave me transient food as well. The caseworker was very concerned about my surgical wounds and insisted on arranging for me to spend a few nights at Big Fish Ministry in Foley so that I could get clean and rest well. Such kindness. They referred me to the Salvation Army Men’s Shelter and to Housing First, but I don’t think that’s for me. I came back by a couple of days later, not for any help; I’m fine. I came to say thank you to those who helped me.

CSC has many programs for children which run throughout the year, including the Birthday Club and Summer Food “Backpacks”. The Birthday Club provides gifts for client children on their birthday, as well as a cake mix, frosting, and candles. The Summer Food Program is modeled after the familiar weekend backpack program during the school year. During the summer, when children are not in school for breakfast and lunch, the Center provides easy to prepare foods for breakfast and lunch, and two snacks a day, for five days a week. The year, 2019, the Center plans to start a program to help qualified families with school supplies.

The CSC Food Pantry is a very busy place. Pictured to the left are some of the volunteers packing Christmas food boxes. A lot of work and a lot of FUN!
