Green infrastructure is an “interconnected system of natural areas
and open space that conserves ecosystem values, helps sustain
clean air and water, and provides benefits to people and wildlife.”
Tree canopy cover offers temperature and air quality benefits;
greenways provide alternative transportation, opportunities for
physical activity, and stress reduction, and a comfortable and
desirable public realm improves urban vitality.
Green infrastructure strategies and related benefits extend well
beyond stormwater harvesting and mitigation.

Local governments can implement a wide range of green
infrastructure actions including low impact development (LID)
methods, multi-purpose neighborhood and regional water
management, and the promotion of habitat patch and
ecological connectivity through urban forestry, agriculture,
public spaces, and natural resource conservation planning.

What do we measure?
How do we set goals?
How can we compare Cities?
Now what?

STAR Goal
Green Infrastructure:
Demonstrate that 35% of the jurisdiction’s land has protected vegetated surfaces performing at a minimum 2 of the following functions:
localized cooling through tree canopy cover, green roofs or green walls;
Water management through wetlands, stream buffers, and permeable surfaces;
Recreation through parks and/or greenways.
or
Demonstrate that 85% of the population lives within a ½-mile walk distance of green infrastructure features, listed above.

Night Skies
A natural night sky supports all life on Earth
A predictable rhythm of day and night -encoded in the DNA of most plants and animals
Light pollution can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife and our climate
