For more than 20 years, The Rabbit Patch Cottage has been one of southern Illinois’ favorite and most unique shops. “We specialize in country décor as well as fl orals, candles, lighting accessories, quilts, signs and much, much more,” said owner Melissa Harper. She said the old and new “primitive” furniture is a specialty of the store. They can take most pieces of old furniture, add a little paint and TLC, and create a new piece for your country home, without breaking the bank! “We offer a lot of “new” primitive furniture in your choices of colors as well as styles. We also do a lot of custom pieces, just bring in your measurements.” The store offers everything from entertainment centers to tables and chairs, all with the loved and worn look. “Everything has that country feel,” she added. You’ll fi nd an outstanding selection of braided rugs, candles and melts, Gooseberry Patch cookbooks, lamps, pictures, shelving and tart burners. When you shop at The Rabbit Patch, you instantly become one of their family and you’ll notice the care and concern Melissa and her staff take in making sure you fi nd exactly what you want.

Hughes Dental Arts CentreDr. Christopher Hughes in not your

average dentist. His concern is not justabout how his patients teeth work, butalso about how they look. It’s a conceptaround which he’s built his entire Herrinpractice around. Even the name HughesDental Arts Centre reflects it.

“I think the name emphasizes theartistic aspects of dentistry,” Dr. Hughessaid. “As much as dentistry requiresmedical science and training, it alsorequires skills in artistry and aesthetics.”

That means that patients not only turnto Dr. Hughes and his staff for routinedental care such as cleanings, filings, extractions and root canals, but also forimproving their smiles.

“We do cosmetic dentistry. We call itsmile makeovers,” he said.

Services include teeth whitening, straightening, fixing chips and cracks orother damaged areas of teeth.

Hughes grew up in Herrin and is agraduate of the SIU School of DentalMedicine in Alton. He also has completedadvanced training in aesthetic andreconstructive dentistry and implantdentistry.

“We’re the only office in southernIllinois that does complete implant care,”he said. “We do the implant surgery aswell as make the crown or denture thatfits the implant(s). That makes usunique. In most other settings, you go toone dentist for the surgery and thenanother for the restoration. We do theentire procedure here without an outsidereferral.”

For those patients who are a bitnervous about their trip to the dentist,Hughes also offers intravenous sedation.

“We administer a sedative through anIV,” he explained. “It is ideal for patientsthat want to get dental care done but arefearful. It makes them feel sleepy, relaxedand less anxious.”

Regardless if the care is a routineexamination and cleaning or moreadvanced services, the staff of HughesDental Arts Centre focus on helpingpeople look and feel their best.

“We want people to feel good abouttheir smiles, because that impacts howthey feel about themselves and ultimatelyhas an influence on their lifestyle andtheir confidence.”

Country Crafted FurnitureIn today’s day and age it is rare to know

where any product you purchase is made.Even more rare is knowing who createdthe item. However, that’s not the case atCountry Crafted Furniture in MountVernon.

For more than 20 years, owner RichardStrite and the staff at Country CraftedFurniture have been selling Amish-madefurniture, most of which is made inIllinois. Every piece is signed by thecraftsman who made it.

“The builder put his name right on theback or the bottom of the furniture. They’re willing to sign their names to it,so their own personal reputation is builtright into the furniture,” Strite said.

Buyers won’t find pressed wood orparticle board in the pieces offered byCountry Crafted Furniture. Strite saidthat the store’s history has shown there isreal satisfaction in owning quality-madefurniture, especially when compared tothe frustration of dealing with cheaply-made import products.

“I always tell customers that this typeof furniture is an investment. It will holdits value or even increase in value,” Stritesaid. “This is furniture that will last and

is the type of thing that customers willwant to pass along to their children.”

Each piece of furniture comes with alifetime warranty.

Strite said furniture can be made froma variety of woods and with a number ofdifferent stain finishes, so customers canmatch their existing home décor. Theyeven can build custom furniture fromcustomer’s ideas, photos and plans.

“With our many options, you can haveyour furniture built just the way youwould like it,” he said.

‘The builder put his name right onthe back or the bottom of thefurniture. They’re willing to signtheir names to it, so their ownpersonal reputation is built rightinto the furniture.’

RICHARD STRITE,OWNER, COUNTRY CRAFTED FURNITURE

‘The high level of customer serviceand respect that the staff providesto the residents and their familiesassures their role in the HeritageWoods family.’

LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESS

A-1 BuildingsA 1 Buildings have been in business for

over 20 years, and build approximately100 buildings a year. That is a lot ofcrews and coordination, but it is a laborof love, say the owners David and LeslieAndrews. Each building requires a rolledmetal panel to complete construction, and it was hard to find a reliable sourcefor metal that was near by. That was not ahurdle for this innovative couple. Thesimple solution was to manufacture thepanels themselves, so in February of2009, Heartland Metal Sales was startedand the company grew even more.

“With thirty years in the post-framebuilding industry, it was a naturaldecision for us to offer these metalservices as well,” Leslie Andrews said.

“We know what kind of quality is neededto build a good building and how to makeit look good and how to get the job donequickly and on time.”

Heartland Metal Sales produces avariety of metal panels for buildings, roofs, commercial buildings, farmstructures and carports. The companycan provide metal for commercial, residential and agricultural applicationand complete accessory trimcomponents.

“We also offer Energy-Star qualifiedmetal sheeting for building. Thisprovides a tax incentive as well as energysavings that can help reduce costs.” shesaid.

Andrews said that the company offers

nearly 20 colors of metal, all produced tospecifications given by the customer. Anylength is available and with the widevariety of colors, we can work with ourcustomers to make the buildings fit inwith their existing homes. “Ourcustomers have been pleased that we takethe time to work with them and find outwhat their needs are. Our buildingknowledge, coupled with the fact we canmanufacture on site, gives us the perfectproduct for them. Quality, looks and anaffordable price. It seems to be working. We’ve been at it now for over 20 yearsand we have a great crew.” She said.

Even as a new company, HeartlandMetals holds true to the same philosophythat customers of A-1 Buildings have

come to appreciate – high qualityproducts and an excellent reputation.

“People deal with us because of ourhonesty,” David Andrews said. “We workhard to make sure our customers get thekind of job delivered we would want.”

Heartland Metals and A-1 Buildingsserve about a 150 mile radius and includeportions of Illinois, Indiana, Missouriand Kentucky. They can be reached attheir factory in Pittsburg, Illinois at 618-983-5909 or 618-983-8600.www.heartlandmetalsales.com websiteor email us [email protected].

Ralph grew up around Elkville and saidthat Southern Illinois has always been hishome, and starting a business here wasthe only option he'd consider. He said heopened the business because he felt therewas a need for a dealer in the area whospecifically dealt with equipment andservice. While many other stores soldmowers and chainsaws, there was noservice or repair included.

And for those reasons, customers, passup the Big Box stores and travel to theirhumble shop on Highway 51 one milesouth of Elkville. Glass by JenRussThe store opened in November, 2009,

mainly selling engraved glass items, and didsurprisingly well for a brand new businessopening at an odd time of year and in adownturned economy. During the post-Christmas slump, however, I neededsomething else to work on; glass engravingis a messy business and can't be done at thestore. I remembered that I had some glassbeads, and decided to make jewelry.

I think the biggest strength of thebusiness is the flexibility I offer. There areglass items that I have already engraved, and items and designs for a customer to

choose from. Also, I can engrave glass thatis brought in and I can help someone designtheir own. There are lots of beads andcolors to choose from.

I'm most proud of the support my familyhas given me, especially the husband whoputs up with the frequent bouts ofsinglemindedness while I try to plansomething. My granddaughters wear thejewelry, make the web page and Facebookpage, help clean the store, and sometimesrun the place if I have to be away.

SIU Credit UnionThe old advertising adage

“Membership has its privileges” couldeasily be applied to the SIU Credit Union. What began more than 70 years ago as acredit union for people affiliated withSouthern Illinois University Carbondalehas evolved into a regional financialinstitution serving more than 27,500Southern Illinoisans.

“We’re very proud of our SIU roots,”says Chris Sievers, marketing director forthe SIU Credit Union, “but we’veexpanded with community charters.Anyone in southern Illinois can join thecredit union.”

SIU Credit Union members benefitfrom a number of convenient branchlocations. There are two in Carbondale, one in Marion and a Metropolis branchserves Massac County. Plus, Sievers saysa new location in Energy will be openinglater this summer.

Sievers explains that a credit unionfunctions like a bank, with one uniquecharacteristic.

“The difference is ownership,” he says.

“Banks are owned by other people, but allof our members are owners of the creditunion.”

Membership in the SIU Credit Union isjust $5. Because of the member-owners,credit unions usually have lower feestructures and better returns oninvestments.

“All of our products and services arebasically the same as banks, but typicallyat a credit union, members will see lowerfees, better deposit rates and lower loanrates,” he says.

Sievers adds members often also see adifference in service.

“We work for the members and ourmembers are our owners,” he explains.“We really deliver on offeringcompetitive products and great services. When you walk in the door, we’re goingto treat you like an owner because you arean owner.”

Members of the SIU Credit Union haveaccess to more than 65,000 free ATMsaround the country. Sievers says thenetwork is larger than those of some

national financial institutions, includingBank of America. Plus the ATMs oftencan be found in convenient locations

including retailers and gas stations.Investment management and advisory

services are provided through apartnership with Certified FinancialPlanner Scott McClatchey, who assistsmembers with money management,

retirement and educational planning andthe purchase of a variety of investmentproducts.

The SIU Credit Union offers a varietyof savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, loans of all types, safe deposit boxes, and debit and creditcards. Debit card users enjoy the benefitsof Power Points, an SIUCU program thatreward members for doing business withthe Credit Union.

“A lot of our members take advantageof it, and it’s just a reward for being amember,” Sievers says. “Everybody uses adebit card, why not be rewarded for it?”

In the program, members earn pointsfor transactions, savings balances and theuse of other services. The points can beexchanged for increases in CD balances, decreases in loan balances or as giftcards.

“It’s just another of the unique benefitsof credit union membership,” Sieverssays.

‘All of our products and servicesare basically the same as banks, but typically at a credit union, members will see lower fees, betterdeposit rates and lower loan rates.’
