Area small businesses buoy communityBy JIM OFFNER

WATERLOO — Local entrepre-neurs say they fill a crucial role because, as products of the Cedar Valley, they have a keen interest in the health of the community.

They also say they have a genu-ine feel for the health of the local business climate.

“One thing I will say about local businesses is reputation is very important to those people,” said Abby Burr, manager of the Family Video store at 3032 Ansborough Ave. in Waterloo. “They tend to provide the best customer ser-vice. The customers we cater to, that’s what they’re looking for.”

Burr points out that Family Video is one of the few remaining brick-and-mortar video stores in the Cedar Valley, which is impor-tant to the local market.

“Our competitors are silent competitors because there are a limited number of video-rent-al businesses to shop at,” she said. “The customers are look-ing for stores, to be waited on; they’re looking for what interests them. We’re here to meet those needs. It’s critical for growth of a community.”

Bill Colwell, who has run a Ford dealership in Hudson for 27 years, said his business is like a family.

“Some of the satisfying things is you see 30 to 40 employees and over the years you watch them

grow and they go from young people to families to kids in col-lege,” he said. “Just experiencing that with them to heading toward their retirement years is reward-ing in itself.”

In Colwell’s nearly three decades at the helm of his deal-ership, he said, the business has retained numerous long-time employees.

“We try to treat our employees like family, so you watch them grow like you do your own kids,” he said. “I bought out some busi-ness owners (Keith Motors) in Hudson 27 years ago, and there were six employees. Three of them are still here.”

Steve Dust, CEO of the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber, said the Cedar Valley is fortunate to have a variety of long-estab-lished local businesses anchoring the local economy.

“We sometimes tend to focus a great deal on the larger business-es that are located outside our area, but for us to really under-stand the strength of the Cedar Valley, we have to look at locally owned businesses of all sizes, from CBE Group to the Bertch family and Lost Island to have a real understanding of the impact of the strong locally owned busi-nesses,” Dust said. “Even when we look at the big guys, it gets lost that even though John Deere was a great place to grow, it was the

Waterloo Boy tractor they grew from but also the base of sup-pliers that was already here and the entrepreneurship that grew from ag-equipment demands that were here.”

Dust said the Cedar Valley is a natural hotbed for talent that enables local businesses to thrive.

“The employment levels, wealth and innovative base is all here because of locally owned businesses,” h said. “We contin-ually strive to celebrate locally owned efforts to make sure local-ly owned businesses are being served.”

Local businesses have long rec-ognized the strong talent pool available in their own backyards, said Bob Hellman, CEO of Hell-man Associates Inc., a Waterloo-based advertising agency.

“We draw from the local com-munity in recruiting,” he said. “A number of our people are from this general area, even though the majority of our clients are outside the marketplace. We recruit here; we bank locally; most of our sup-pliers are local folks. So, the busi-ness we bring in from outside

clients, literally, the income and processes are distributed locally, so to speak.”

It’s a “serious” responsibility, Hellman noted.

“We take our image in this mar-ketplace very seriously,” he said. “As I’ve said before, I’ve always been a supporter of the Cedar Valley. I as born and raised here. I think locally owned businesses are the mainstream of America,

quite frankly. I think that they’re the engine that drives American growth, Let’s face it: We have offices in Minneapolis and Colo-rado, but the work is done here locally and, as far as I’m con-cerned, it will always be done here locally.”

Jim Mudd, CEO of Mudd Advertising in Cedar Falls, concurred.

“There are several things I think that stand out about local businesses,” he said. “It naturally provides job that are important and include local people who have an opportunity to improve their skills.

“Secondary, in our case and other privately held companies, it brings in so much outside money to our banking system, which is really pertinent to the growth of the community. It’s not recycled money, so to speak. If you’re bringing in tens of mil-lions of dollars a month, that is the lifeblood of the community. That’s probably the No. 1 thing that’s good about locally owned enterprises. The profits stay here. The cash flow that is generated through the economy.”

Local businesses have long recognized the strong talent pool available in their own backyards, said Bob Hellman, CEO of Hellman Associates Inc., a Waterloo-based advertising agency.

Kris’s main objective is to provide quality care without the confinements of a larger corporation.

In 2011, A Step Ahead Therapy Center worked toward becoming the first Physical Therapy clinic in the Cedar Valley with therapists certified in manual therapy. By blending these techniques with more current functional movement and stability tech-niques, we can show you how to get A Step Ahead.
