Free SMART Logo Embroidery

Members are encouraged to bring in clothing to be embroidered with the SMART Local 49 logo. Polo shirts, button down shirts, jackets, ball caps, etc. can be dropped off at the hall, with instructions as to the color and placement of the logo. It takes about two weeks or so, and we will call to let you know when they are ready to be picked up.

This makes a nice addition to the shirts and caps that we have for sale in the Union office!

Vision and Hearing Benefits

Don’t forget that the Local 49 Family Health Plan provides vision and hearing benefits as part of your coverage. The coverage is provided as a reimbursement up to the allowed amounts listed in your Plan Summary and on the SSA website, so you will have to pay for the service first.

Be sure to check the receipt for the insurance codes that you will have to submit with the reimbursement claim. If they are not on the receipt, the provider will be able to tell you what they are.

Suicides in the News

The recent news about celebrity suicides serves as an important reminder that medical depression has no boundaries; it affects young and old, men and women, every ethnicity and all rungs on the socio-economic spectrum. We look at someone like an Anthony Bourdain or Kate Spade, and think these people had everything to live for. But, from the outside looking in, we can never truly understand the hopelessness and despair that causes someone to take that final drastic measure. The construction industry as a whole has the second highest suicide rate of all occupations, behind only the forest service. This is one of the reasons the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust created a hotline where members can call to do anything from vent frustrations to get professional mental health counseling. The hotline is open 24 hours, seven days a week to any member or their family that needs it. The voice at the other end is Daria Todor, ACSW, LCSW-C, MAC, a licensed social worker and addictions counselor. Daria has experience as an employee assistance program counselor and worked with Washington, D.C.-area airline employees after the Sept. 11 attacks.

We know the first call can be the

most difficult. But we urge you to

take that first step. Should you feel

the need to speak with a trained

professional, our hotline number is

always open at 877-884-6227.

All calls are strictly confidential.

Organizing Isaiah Zemke --Organizer

Brothers and Sisters,

We have made great progress this year with a 4.3% increase in membership within the ranks of our union. This increase is due to a combination of the Facebook Data Center and Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and an increase in market share in West Texas that includes awarded projects upwards of .5 billion dollars with the help of our new organizer Shawn Smith. Additionally, we are working diligently to increase our number of signatory contractors.

In Santa Fe, we have been able to defeat bad legislation such as the attempt to repeal the State of New Mexico Prevailing Wage, and the Right to Work and Workman’s Compensation bills. For the upcoming legislative session, we have drafted and will propose Fire Life Safety legislation that will create union jobs for our members performing inspections on all smoke and fire dampers. We will also be working to amend the New Mexico Public Works Minimum Wage Act. Creating stronger language within the act will keep cheating contractors from misclassifying and under paying workers. Ideally, contractors engaging in such behavior will be charged with penalties and fines to level the playing field for our signatory contractors.

All of this happens with the help of our allies who vote on all of this legislation. This is exactly why it is crucial that we elect candidates that we know will stand with us. Don’t forget to take the slate card in this newsletter to the polls and if you can, vote early, our livelihoods depend on it.

My office is always open to any sister or brother, as it takes all of us together to make this great organization even better.

Air System Components 2018 – 2022 Contract Signed Vince Alvarado --Business Manager/FST
