In Dewsbury Sustrans’ Connect2 is a partnership between
Dewsbury and Ossett walking and cycling networkThis map has been developed to help you travel around Dewsbury and Ossett by foot, bike and public transport. Each grid on the map overleaf represents an average 10 minutes’ walk or 4 minutes’ cycle ride, showing just how quick it is to get around under your own steam.
New walking and cycling routes in Dewsbury and Ossett are part of a national Sustrans project to enable people to make more everyday journeys on foot or by bike.
The Greenway links together the neighbouring towns of Dewsbury and Ossett, via Earlsheaton and there is a useful link to Savile Town and the canal towpath. This provides a direct traffic free route through some stunning surroundings.
The route also forms part of the National Cycle Network, linking with many well established routes in Yorkshire; providing a direct traffic free route to Bradford and a link into the “Wakefield Wheel” route. For further information about cycling in Ossett and the wider Wakefield district, please visit www.wakefield.gov.uk/CultureAndLeisure/outdoors/Cycling
See www.wakefield.gov.uk then search for “cycling” for information on other cycle routes and greenways.
Dewsbury/Ossett Local Travel Map
Want to get around under your own steam?Sustrans can help Visit www.sustrans.org.uk to find detailed travel maps of your local area that include walking and cycling paths, bus stops, train stations and connections to local destinations such as shops, schools, GP surgeries and sports facilities. You can also plot your own journeys to share with friends and family.
The Sustrans website also has some great tips if you’re thinking about getting back on your bike or would like to go cycling with your children. Take a look at the easy rides section to find simple, safe and enjoyable cycling routes in your area, or order a free cycling information pack highlighting all the National Cycle Network routes near you.
Good reasons to get around by foot, bike, bus or train
For healthWalking and cycling to work, the shops or to visit friends/family are great ways to fit regular physical activity into your daily routine.
Regular walking and cycling can help to burn calories, reduce cholesterol and lower blood pressure, also helping to improve mood and your sense of well-being.
For the environmentHuman activity places the environment under threat. Cars currently make up 13% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions, but if you take a train or coach your CO2 contribution will be 6-8 times less, and if you walk or cycle…nothing at all. Fewer cars also creates safer and quieter neighbourhoods for everyone to enjoy.
For youOne of the best things about getting around under your own steam is that it’s really cheap. There’s no car tax to pay, no need for an MOT and you don’t have to worry about petrol prices. If you walk or cycle regularly you’ll save a fortune, so there’ll be more cash to spend on fun things, like you!

Dewsbury Water Linked
The Greenway directly links to the canal towpath of the Calder & Hebble Navigation. The Canal & River Trust is working with partners in Dewsbury to enhance the local waterways and encourage better community cohesion, improve health and wellbeing and employability.
