By Mary Jo Stuck The Watervliet School Board of Education ap- proved the proposed elementary graded center restructuring without transportation by a four to two vote at the May 7th meeting. Those voting in favor were president Richard Peterson, vice-president Mary Lou Long, secretary Pattie Andrasi and treasurer Presley Olson. Those voting against were trustees George Shane and Darrell Day, Jr. Trustee John Stone was absent from the meeting. According to president Richard Peterson one of the board's goals for this year is "to encourage evaluation and for- mulation of a plan to balance and stabilize at- tendance and population between the two elemen- tary buildings; and during the course of the review to reconsider the grade cen- ter concept as a possible alternative." Peterson reviewed the timetable followed in developing the proposal. Superintendent William Penny gave the initial report in February with a second report presented at the March 5th board meeting. A committee consisting of ad- ministrators, staff, PTO and community members was formed on March 9 to give input. At the April 2 meeting the first proposal was presented to the board for study and an open discussion was held at the April 9th meeting with the board indicating a decision would be made ^t the May 7th meeting. "This has been con- sidered primarily as an educational program, although there is also some financial con- sideration," Peterson commented. "We are looking at this as a total education program in terms of providing the best educational program for the students." By Ginger Robinson Coloma Township fireboard trustee Fred Martin reported to the board Monday night that firemen who have been subpoenaed to appear in court are seeking wage compensations from the Township and the City. According to Martin the subpoenaed firemen would receive $12.00 a day from the judical system and would be losing a substan- tial amount of earned wages. Fire Chief Leonard Dolezan said the exact amount firemen would lose was uncertain because they could not determine the exact amount of time the firemen would be spending in the Court room. Assistant Chief Bill Spearltt said that although all 27 firemen have been subpoenaed by prosecuting attorney Paul Maloney over the Menasha arson in- vestigation, he felt only four or five would actually make an appearance. Township supervisor Rodney Kreiger directed the fireboard to formulate some kind of proposal for the board to act on and stated "we're making some kind of policy we're going to have to live with" and expressed desire for "continuity with the City." He also mentioned that similar circumstances have been discussed regarding Township police contacts which ex- pired in March. In other business the board discussed the possibility of aboUshing the annual township meeting. Under recent v state law any township with a population over 5000 ^an place the issue on an lections ballot, Kreiger stated that over the years the annual meeting had been incor- porated into the man- datory budget and Federal Revenue Sharing hearings. 'Stage Door' opens Friday night at WHS PAGE THREE

An exc i t ing y e a r of thea t re ends on F r iday and Saturday of this week when the F i re Arts Depar-tment of Watervliet High School presents the Edna Ferber - George S. Kauf-m a n c o m e d y - d r a m a "S tage Door" with the lights brightening prom-ptly at 8 p.m. nighUy.

The company of some 32 student players have been i n t e n s i v e r e h e a r s a l sessions for five weeks and have assisted in the con-struction of an authentic setting for the production. Tickets a r e now available f rom each cast member and can also be purchased a t the box office in the thea t re on show nights.

"Stage Door," a play written several years ago, s t i l l m a i n t a i n s a v i t a l c u r r e n t t h e m e — the never-ending struggle of a group of young actors and a c t r e s s e s p u r s u i n g c a r e e r s on the p ro f e s s iona l s t age . A n u m b e r of indiv idual s t o r i e s a r e woven throughout the plot line — the "hard-as-nails" cynic who d i s p l a y e r s h e r worldly a t t i tude with a sharp tongue — the flashy beauty who "sells out" to Hollywood and the f i lm world — the dedica ted ingenue who, despite a f lood of c o n t r a r y p r e s s u r e s , u l t i m a t e l y "wins out" earning her place on Broadway! The script is challenging and demanding — and the ac-tors and actresses at WHS have been working very h a r d to c a p t u r e t he " f l avor" of the play.

The production has been designed and directed by Mr. J i m Keech in his 23rd y e a r a s d i r e c t o r of dramatics at WHS. He is

T e r r i Zink is a 5th grader in Mrs. Pumfe ry ' s room at North Elementary School. Terri is a nice, average to above average student. Her outstanding quality is her great con-ce rn fo r ch i ld ren who seem to be having a dif-f icul t t ime, both a c a d e m i c a l l y a n d em-otionally. T e n l is quick to help these students. She takes t ime to r ead the lesson to three or four s tuden t s who h a v e problems with directions and difficult words. She quickly goes to the teacher when she feels someome is very upset and or in tears .

Terri is a leader and tries to be fair to all in games and role-playing. She is quick to defend someone who might be misunderstood.

A pleasure in and out of school, a lovely young lady and a g rea t choice for Student of the Week!

ED. NOTE: The following are some of the letters submitted for the 'Best Mom' contest. See page 1 for the details and pages 6 and 7 for the prizes.

INWARD BEAUTY

Dear Editor, I suppose if there were

one word to describe my mother it would have to be beautiful! Not only does she have outward beauty, but more importantly in-ward beauty that only few people possess.

I can look back now in my childhood and realize

the love and patience she had ra is ing my two sisters, four brothers and myself. I can remember her denying herself of things just to provide us with was not always wan-ted but what was needed.

I can never remember her compla in ing about how rough it was to be a mother like so do now days. I know she has never been a w a r d e d for something, t ha t to her comes naturally.

Even though all he r children are grown and on the i r own she is still always there to take care of us or our children when we are sick or whatever the situation might be. Bes ides ra i s ing seven children her mother-in-law stayed with our family for twenty-five years. So as you can see she has done that which was above and beyond the call of

duty. That 's why in my eyes she would be the "Best Mom" ever!

My mothers name is Helen Robinson.

Pamela Sims

TRIES HARDEST

Dear Editor, My mom is the best

mom, because she was there when I needed her. When I had my head surgery she stayed by my side and helped m e recover. She also stuck by my side when I had anorexia , which I just recovered from. She knew if she pushed me it would have made me worse. So with all her care and love she had to stand back and give me love.

Yes, she punished me, but if she didn't that would mean she didn't love me.

My m o m h a s r a i s e d three boys, a girl and me, and now is raising my litt-le three year old sister and

two year old brother. I can tell we are not angles, I don't know how she can do it, but she is. She gets us what she can, and she does without all the time. She tries her hardest to keep the house clean, which is hard with children and young adults undoing what she has done. My mom has done alot for my family and I. I just hope I can repay her some day for all the love she gave us all.

There's no other mom for me except my mother Joan Marie Hayes, the best mom.

Love, Elizabeth Stainbrook

NOT APPRECIATED

Dear Editor, To begin all mothers

dese rve to be " B e s t M o m , " but I can only speak for my mother. As I write this letter I know there is no one person who is least appreciated but

OPINIONS

Mom, I love you! Life has such little meaning to me without your love, you see It's empty, so lonely, so long and dull Without someone who really cares enough to call and say I love you mom, how are you today?

No matter where I go, or what I do or how many I may be with, my heart still longs to hear the words that would give my soul a lift. It would give me cheer just to hear you say I love you Mom, how are you today?

"OH," the tears thats been shed and the prayers thats been said. "Oh," the nights without any sleep. All because you forgot to say the words that mean so much to me. I love you Mom, how are you today.

But the Empty Days are just too much for me alone to bear. So I turn to God who loves me so He will never leave me alone. "Oh," the Joy and Peace he gives to me and Grace to carry on. But still I long to hear your voice. It means so much, you see, just to know you care enough to make that call to me. It gives me Joy within my soul just to hear you say, I love you Mom, how are you today?

I know your life is full with things, the cares that come your way. But life goes on, and time flys by: the weeks, the months, the years. And someday you will be old like me just waiting to hear someone say, I love you Mom, how are you today.

So don't forget, before you go to bed, to make that SPECIAL call and say, I love you Mom, how are you today? It will gladden her heart and give her a smile and she will be so proud of you. All because you took the time to say, I love you Mom, how are you today?

more deserving of my love and the love of my three bro thers than our own "Best Mom." As in our family as well as many other families, our father, and her partner in life was taken from us when we were very young. From tha t m o m e n t on our mother dedicated her life to raising her family the bes t way she possibly could.

Through the love of a great family and many friends plus the strength she drew from above, she raised a family that in my eyes are second to none. So many times a mother goes unthanked, so many times a mother gives up untold pleasures in life just to see a smile on one of her familys face. Our mother spends her life giving to her family, I only hope that this letter can give a little something back to her. For myself and my family, plus my brothers and thei r f ami l i e s we would just like to say, "great job mom" we all love you very much.

Happy Mothers Day, Lynn Reinhardt and Family

ONE YOU LOVE

she'd given me and I felt so helpless because I could not give her what she needed most to live, (a kidney) because I was not old enough. She went through so much pain and suffering that year and would still smile as ask me how I was doing and feeling. Her love was still strong even as she suf-fered.

She did receive the tran-splant and did well for 10 years. After that she lost it and again went through more years of hospitals and pain. She now is on a new system called CAPD. Through this all she still can smile and is a true fighter.

I want to tell her thanks and show her how much I love her by writing you in hopes of her being (Best Mom).

She is "Best Mom" to

me 365 days a year. My mom is Mrs. William (Bet-tie) Mack.

DID MAGIC Dear Editor,

In a recent article in the Watervllet Record entitled Roses and Presents for "Best Mom" really caught my eyes. At first I toyed with the idea that perhaps one of my own daughters or sons might write their t ender s en t imen t s , ex-pressing my loyalty and undying devotion to them a s well a s my Gran-dchildren. With witless eagerness I shared this f a n t a s y with my d e a r sister. Dee. Together we r e t r a c e d our l ives a s young mo the r s . But almost repeticiously our l augh te r and suble amusement evolved f rom our own youth, and so we

share with you a part of a special lady — Our own Mother!

Her hours were endless, as was her love. She had the ability to take a dif-ficult situation and have us believe we were sharing a special event. In her sim-plici ty the mos t com-pl ica ted or confusing situation would become perfectly clear and un-disturbing.

Mother seemed to do mag ic . We can reca l l looking into near empty cupboards during the win-t e r months , yet when mealtime came, each bowl was filled with steaming hot food, se rved with loving hands and warm smiles. Mothers magic went beyond the table, and beau t i fu l d resses were fashioned from gayly prin-ted cloth f rom flour sacks.

My favorite part of any parade is the marching bands and I really enjoyed seeing the marching bands f rom Watervllet, Coloma and Hartford play...they were all very good.

I guess the neatest part of the whole Blossomtime event, culminating in the parade, is how so many communities join in the spirit of it and participate.

And a tip of the ol' top-per to the law enforcement agencies of Benton Har-bor, St. Joe, the County and the State Police for thei r crowd control . I didn't see any problems and had no t rouble in leaving such a congested area. That's quite a feat when 200.000 people a re all packed in a tiny area with limited access.

One week ago, Friday, I was sitting in my chair at home feeling so r ry for myself, because my whole family went over to the other side of the s ta te without m e for the day. This all seemed a bit un-fa i r since I have been so lonesome for my friends.

I never heard the car pull in the yard but I sure heard the doorbell when it rang and I r an for it ex-pecting to see my crowd and hear all of the retur-ning stories.

At the door stood two small figures in outfits like the Blues Brothers and I thought to myself, what 's the deal, it 's not t ime for Hal loween yet . Then I r ea l i zed t h a t the two

Angie and Yvonne decided as long as, Karl was in town and had to make the ride back to Wate rv l i e t they would come along and surprise m e for the weekend, and what a surprise it was. We talked, giggled, and went through all the remember whens we could think of and really had a t ru ly wonderful weekend.

WATERVLIET RECORD

FOR THE RECORD... LOCAL SPORTS & OUIDOORS Barb Willming leads Comets to winning season

By Ginger Robinson The Coloma girls ' Sof-

tball team, winless since 1980 until last year 's ill-f a t e d t r i u m p h over Dowagiac 201, has com-piled an impressive record in this year ' s season.

According to Coloma's coach Peggy McCrery the t eam had not had a victory since 1980 until last year ' s win over Dowagiac 20-1. She said a f te r the game the girls were so fired up the whole t eam jumped on

her and snapped the ten-dons in her right knee. They did not win another game that season.

This year their record is an impressive 9 wins and 6 losses, and their conferen-ce record is two wins, two

losses. "We are having the best season in five years , " M c C r e r y c o m m e n t e d . P a r t of the reason is the Comet 's powerhouse pit-che r , jun ior B a r b Willming.

Willming is a talented.

agressive pitcher with a good eye and a fast ball. She is also an excellent hit-ter along with her other t e a m m a t e s Leigh Ann Turner, Donn Janczewski, T ina Carnel l , T e r r y Fogar ty and Shari Hauch.

The Comets also have another talented pitcher in the wings, f reshman Cara Smith. Smith pitcher her f irst game against Lake Michigan Catholic in Aoril See COMETS on page 12

Last Wednesday night Rick Kraklau and myself did something a little dif-ferent than usual when we attended a meeting of a Rod and Gun Club. At this par t icular meeting of the Watervliet Rod and Gun Club, Rick and myself p r e s e n t e d a p r o g r a m about L a k e Mich igan Fishing.

Among the d i f f e r e n t s u b j e c t s covered wi th types of boats used, dif-f e r en t sa fe ty and elec-t r o n i c e q u i p m e n t a v a i l a b l e a n d ap-p rox ima te cost . As the m e e t i n g p rog res sed we covered d i f f e r e n t rods , reels, brands of line and the many different lures available and what t ime of year to use them.

After the presentation Rick and I a n s w e r e d questions for about forty-five minutes. Hope they understood our answers. All the members present seemed to appreciate the information.

I was particularly im-p r e s s e d wi th t he dedication of the members present and their genuine concern abou t conse r -vation and Gun Safety.

The Watervliet Rod and Gun Club is located on Hennessey Road just past the exp res sway a n d is open every Sunday fo r t rap shooting and target shooting: *

So, why not stop by some Sunday m o r n i n g ; s ee what 's happening.

Things a r e really star-t ing to happen on the Inland Lakes. There have been several reports of ex-cellent catches on Blue Gills on s o m e lakes-mostly in Van Buren Coun-ty-

According to the bait stores I checked, worms a r e t he e a r l y s eason favorite bait.

Most f i sh a r e be ing taken in about four feet of water - not quite on the beds yet.

The Michigan Depar -tment of Natural Resour-ces has issued its annual warning to residents about young or baby wild animals. They are cute, but you should only look a t them. Please do not catch

them and t ry to make pets of them. Not only are they unable to adapt to the dif-fe rence in environment , but it is against the law to possess live wild animals without a permit .

As I h a v e t r a v e l e d around the county I cannot help but make comment on the ext remely la rge n u m b e r of ducks t h a t seem to be around. It looks like this fal l should be promising for those who pursue this sport.

Since the Dam by the P a p e r Mill ha s been opened and the water level h a s d ropped , the a r e a along M-140 which used to almost always have big Mallard ducks swimming around has disappeared. I think the a rea really lost something there.

Last Fr iday Karl (the editor of this paper( . Hank Klitchman (Klitches Spor-ts) , and two gentlemen f rom Minneapolis, Minn, went fishing with me. The w e a t h e r was cold a n d rainey, waves were run-ning two to three feet. F ishing wasn ' t all tha t bad, but before the day was over, par t of my crew had turned a little green around the edges. Kar l took some pictures, but I didn't see how they came out, but he said he would have some in the paper this week. I had some serious tangle ups due to the rough water - sure hope K a r l d idn ' t ca tch them on film.

Well, guess that ' s all for now.

See you next week, Cap'n Woody

Tough pitching keeps Lady Panthers in Red Arrow race PAGE ELEVEN

The Red Arrow Con-ference sports some of the s t ronges t gir ls sof tba l l teams in the state this season. This was evident as the Watervliet Panther girls, who are quite talen-ted in their own right, took on Har t fo rd , who was ranked sixth in the state in last week's coaches' poll.

Pitching is usually the key to a strong girls Sof-tba l l t e am, and both Watervliet and Hartford boas t ve ry successfu l aces. The stage was set for a couple of exci t ing games, and that 's exactly what the fans got.

In the first game Har-tford pitching ace Linda Bisbe hurled a three-hit shut out aga ins t the luckless Panthers. Pan-t h e r p i tcher Colleen Frazier allowed only two hits but got several unear-ned runs scored against her and wound up giving up five runs during the course of the game, with the Panthers falling to the

proved to be an interesting contes t . Again Colleen Frazier and Linda Bisbe were mound opponents, with Hartford ending up on top with a 12-9 victory. Again, like the first game, the Panthers gave up less hits, but the Indians ended up with more runs. The Indians got 8 hits off Frazier, and the Panthers pounded out 9 hits.

The Panthers were win-ning 84 going into the 5th inning of the second game, but the Indians scored five in the fif th. Watervliet came back and tied it, but the Indians came back and scored two in the sixth and one in the seventh and wound up with a 12-9 vic-

tory over the Panthers. The P a n t h e r s then

traveled to New Buffalo later in the week to take on a fine Bison squad. Colleen Frazier took the mound again for the Panthers, and was back to her fami l ia r fo rm allowing only two hi ts in the opening game and striking out five.

Anita Skidmore went three for four and Kim LoPresti had two hits, as the Pan the r s ended up with a one sided 11-1 vic-tory.

It was a close game in the early going," stated Coach Pawielski, "but we capi ta l ized on severa l errors and we really got going."

Those errors proved to be the turning point of the day, as the Panthers came back the second game and walloped an obviously shaken Bison squad 11-0.

Colleen Frazier allowed just one hit and struck out six enroute to the victory.

Kim LoPresti had two hits, including a homerun and her s i s te r , Lisa
