The Living Classroom

Venue: Gortbrack Organic Farm, Ballyseedy, Tralee.

Date: 1st – 7

The course is a practical, hands-on week of learning in the beautiful setting of Gortbrack Organic Farm, Ballyseedy, Tralee.

Elements covered include planning and design of the Living Classroom, basic gardening skills, classroom management and linking

the formal and informal curriculum with the Living Classroom.

The objective of the course is to introduce teachers to the concept of using the school grounds as an educational resource or

Living Classroom where practical activities can be carried out to fulfil the formal and informal Curriculum. Literacy and numeracy

through the Living Classroom will be the predominant Curriculum theme throughout. The Living Classroom course will enable

participants to work with their pupils to assess their school grounds and plan long term improvements.

There is a delicious homemade organic lunch every day to show the link between growing, harvesting and cooking vegetables

from the school organic garden.

Understanding SEN – An Introduction to Special Education

Venue: Scoil Eoin, Balloonagh, Tralee Co Kerry

This course is aimed at mainstream class teachers and recently appointed resource or learning support teachers, who wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of special educational needs. The course aims to develop teachers’ awareness and understanding of a broad range of special educational needs including Autism, ADD/ADHD, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD), Physical Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Specific Speech and Language Difficulties, Visual and Hearing impairments, Moderate General Learning Disability and Specific Learning Difficulties(Dyslexia/Dyscalculia/Dysgraphia). A strong emphasis is placed on providing participants with practical strategies and approaches to promote the inclusion of children with SEN within mainstream education.

Education Centres in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

This course explores Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework (NCCA, 2009) and provides lots of practical

ideas for using Aistear and especially the play guidelines, in your infant classroom. Take a look at other teachers’

resources for play and find out how they plan for, resource, support and assess children’s learning through play.

Gather new ideas for developing young children’s oral language, emergent writing and mathematical learning.

This course will also link closely with the new Primary Language Curriculum for Junior Infants –Second Class

You will also hear about a variety of resources available on the NCCA’s website which could be useful in your school’s

work on self-evaluation and improvement.

This course will explore the role of poetry in fostering children’s imaginations, using the poetry of W.B. Yeats to model how all aspects of the English Language Curriculum can be developed through the use of poetry. Active Maths for Senior Classes

Experience a more practical and investigative approach in the teaching of Maths to the senior classes. This course will focus on strategies and methodologies to implement a more active learning and guided discovery approach in your classroom. It will cover topics to include the use of the I-Pad, Khan Academy and computer programming. It will explore investigative approaches to problem solving and it will also cover Maths Eyes, a new and innovative approach to more meaningful real life Maths experience for your pupils. Strategies and Methodologies to implement a more practical active learning approach in the teaching of Maths. Mental Maths: strategies and techniques that can be implemented in the classroom. Problem Solving: strategies and techniques that can be put into practice in the classroom. Khan Academy: enable participants to use as a teaching tool. Khan Academy: computer programming for children. Having Maths Eyes encourages the use of the real world as a starting point for the relevant exploration in the Maths world. An innovative approach making Maths more real and meaningful.

Getting Active! Finding a Balance in PE for a Healthy Well-Being

Venue: Fossa NS Killarney Co Kerry Dates: 1st – 7th July 2015 Presenters: Grace Crowley & Niall O’Mahony This course will offer you the opportunity to increase your competence and confidence in teaching Physical Education by experiencing a broad and balanced Programme of quality PE, presented through good practices in all strands. A variety of methodologies will be used in examining PE. School Self-Evaluation, Cross-Curricular Integration, Inclusion of Special Educational Needs, Fundamental Movement Skills, Health-Related Fitness, and The Active School Flag will be discussed and demonstrated through practical sessions consisting of enjoyable child-centred PE activities. It is hoped the course will provide you with an increased understanding of how you can foster a child’s lifelong participation with physical activity through PE.

Gaelic Games - enhancing the delivery of PE, and Integration with other subjects Venue: CBS Primary School, Clounalour Tralee Co Kerry Dates: 1st July –3rd July - Face to Face

Monday 6th July – Tuesday 7th July – online Presenter: GAA Games Development staff and tutors This GAA Teacher Summer Course is a new blended course using the Association's new Learning and Development Community Portal available at www.learning.gaa.ie/. The face-to-face element runs over three days and approximately eight hours online training has to be completed thereafter. Being largely practical-based, it aims to introduce teachers to Gaelic games - hurling, Gaelic football, camogie, ladies Gaelic football, handball and rounders. The main objective of the courses is the advancement of teachers' pedagogical, teaching, learning and management skills in the context of the primary school Physical Education (PE) Curriculum. Furthermore participants will develop the ability to deliver elements of the PE curriculum through the medium of Gaelic games. An emphasis on numeracy and literacy programmes highlight the opportunity to integrate PE through a teaching curriculum by using the various resources developed by the GAA.

Music from Scratch through Samba Drumming and Percussion This is a course for teachers, who need a new avenue to explore while delivering music confidently. No musical experience is necessary Venue: Holy Family Primary School Balloonagh Tralee Co Kerry Dates: 1st - 7th July 2015 Presenter: Kieran Gallagher The objective of the Course is to give all of the participants the ability to use music/percussion in their classrooms and increase the participation of all students. All participants will develop new skills enabling them to instigate active music- making in their class/school. They also get an opportunity to play drums during the week. Teachers will use pulse, tempo, tones, prepared instruments, homemade instruments, the human voice and the human body. They will explore the use of percussion on a local and global scale. The group will learn concentrating/focusing techniques, ways of exploring individuality in musical expression as well as experiencing first hand ensemble music- making and the many elements surrounding performance. The course will develop the element of self -esteem through personal achievement.

Doing Drama in the Classroom

Venue: The Education Centre Tralee Co Kerry Dates: 17th – 21st August 2015 Presenters: Dr Dorothy Morrissey and Dr Fiona McDonagh, Department of Arts Education and Physical

Education, Mary Immaculate College, Limerick This Course is premised on the belief that teachers’ understanding of Drama as an art form is a prerequisite for effective classroom practice in drama. Therefore, on this course, teachers will engage in the processes of creating, performing and responding to drama. Teachers will also explore how they can plan for, facilitate and evaluate children’s engagement in these processes. A particular focus of the course is an exploration of classroom drama as it relates to emerging developments in theatre for young audiences in Ireland.

Using Rhythm in the Classroom Venue: The Education Centre Dromtacker, Tralee Co Kerry Dates: 17th – 21st August 2015 Presenter: Martin Schaerer

This course is designed to build the repertoire of Primary school teachers in teaching Music as well as introducing new ideas, methods and skills that can be used to integrate Music into literacy (oral language skills, listening and responding, following directions, communication skills, sound identification, develop auditory memory), numeracy (counting, skip counting, multiplication), PE (coordination, balance, kin-aesthetic activity), social and personal development, icebreakers, transitions, movement breaks, refreshers, etc. Teachers will be introduced to active and fun rhythmical activities such as body percussion, making up rhythms using words, cup rhythms on tables, songs and games which they can use in their classrooms. The course is designed to make the content easily assessable to teachers through hands on activities and practical application of learning. Facilitator: The course is facilitated by Martin Schaerer (PercussionWorkshop.ie) who is an experienced teacher, workshop facilitator and performer.
