SeedSowingon theCheapby Pippa Greenwood

If you want your garden fullof colour, interest, perfumeand perhaps even tasty crops, there’s no doubt that theleast expensive way to do itis to raise your plants fromseed. But what can be doneto ensure the results in thegarden are just as impressive?Start with a little self-restraint.It’s all too easy to buy enoughseed to fill a tennis court whenyou have an average-sizedgarden. Make a list of whatyou actually need and put alimit on how many un-plannedpurchases you’ll allow yourself.Think about sharing. Eachpacket of seed often containstens or even hundreds ofseeds, so why not agree toswap a few with friends andrelatives. This will not onlysave you money, but willalso maximise the range ofplants you can grow withoutincreasing your outlay.Don’t be tempted to sow toomany seeds at one time. Bysowing little and often you’llmaximise flower time of annualflowers and cropping time forvegetables and herbs. It alsomeans that if the conditions arenot right for germination on oneoccasion, all is not lost. You may not need to buy what

you want. Collect seed fromyour garden or from gardensof friends and neighbours, making sure that the plantsare healthy and that they’reready and ripe or they won’tgerminate. Seeds labelled as‘F1’ will produce flowers whoseseeds will not ‘come true’,meaning that the offspring willnot be the same as the originalplant and will often be lessproductive. Try to harvest theseed when the plants and theweather are dry, remove anybits of plant debris and allowthem to dry off naturally, notbecoming too warm or cold.If you can’t sow the seedsimmediately, make sure youstore them, well labelled, in acool, dry place.A small heated or evenun-heated propagator canhelp you reliably raise a farwider range of plants fromseed. Choose one which issturdily built and has properventilation in the clear plasticlid, otherwise seedlings maydie on hot days. We stocksome of the lovely UK-madeStewart propagators at www.pippagreenwood.com.Seeds do best if not sown tooclosely, and by sowing thinlyyou’ll also save yourself timeand money. Wider spacing

makes for less thinning out butif you do have to thin out a bit, remember that most seedlingswill perform well if looked afterproperly. Many herbaceous perennialscan successfully be dividedinto several new plants. Indeedmost herbaceous plants dobetter when occasionallydivided as the plant does notbecome so congested and youcan dispose of the grotty bitsand plant the good sectionsinto fresh soil. Many plants are also easilypropagated from cuttings, andover the next few weeks, youcould get some great cuttingsfrom summer favourites suchas fuchsias for virtually no costat all. They’ll be flowering laterthis year too.

Visit www.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for ‘GrowYour Ownwith PippaGreenwood’ where you canchoose from a fantasticselection of vegetables forplanting AND receive an emaileachweek telling you all youneed to know to ensure greatresults – from just £29. Time ForA SpringCleanBy Claudia Leaf

I had invited an old schoolfriend around for coffee andwas trying hard to make agood impression. Suddenly ashaft of spring sunlight floodedmy lounge, making me cringewith embarrassment. With a growing sense ofshame I watched as thisunforgiving shaft of light slidacross the room, showing upthe grubby finger marks onthe door, the ring marks on myglass table and a thick layer ofdust on the mantelpiece. When it finally landed at myfriend’s feet, close to a dirtypaw mark our dog had lefton the carpet, I saw a look ofalarm on her face.“I’m so sorry, I’ve just noticed.Did I do that?”I had a nanosecond todecide whether I shouldopenly confess my domesticshortcomings or keep quiet.“Oh, don’t worry”, I replied.“It’ll brush off when it’s dry.”She left soon afterwards, stillapologising. I took a deepbreath and realised it was timefor some spring cleaning. An article in the Manufacturerand Builder magazine of1872 (a “practical journal ofindustrial progress”) describesspring cleaning as “Theseason of general cleaning, when all the corners and

closets are overturned andhidden things are brought tolight”.Whilst period dramas suchas “Downton Abbey” haveinspired a new generation torevive traditional kitchen skills,it’s questionable whether 21stcentury householders will betempted to adopt the cleaningmethods recommendedby the magazine, whichinclude black-leading grates, whitewashing walls andscalding bedsteads. The Victorians may haveexcelled at spring cleaning butthey certainly didn’t invent it.Some historians believe thatthe origins of this tradition dateback to the ancient PersianNew Year, the Iranian Norouz, which falls on the first day ofspring. Iranians still practice“khooneh tekouni” – whichliterally translates as ‘shakingthe house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passoveris a religious festival thatalso hints at a possible originfor spring cleaning. Duringthe holiday the faithful areinstructed to refrain fromeating any leavened foodstuffs(‘chametz’). The Biblecommands that even tinycrumbs must be removed fromthe house and this results ina ritual hunt for crumbs bycandlelight during the eveningbefore the holiday begins.

Christianity has its own springcleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everythingthoroughly either before orduring the first week of Lent,as a physical manifestationof Lent’s message of spiritualcleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, theconcept of New Year cleaningis associated with goodfortune. They believed thatpeople should sweep theirfloors and clean their housesto rid them of any negativeinfluences that may haveaccumulated during the lasttwelve months. Householdersthen locked up the broom for afew days to prevent sweepingaway any good luck that mighthave entered at the turn of theyear. When ancient cultures sharesuch similar traditions it’shard to say exactly whenand where the idea of ‘springcleaning’ originated. However,it’s obvious that the urge toclear away the cobwebs ofwinter and prepare for thesummer months is hard-wiredinto human DNA.Personally I believe that ourseasonal enthusiasm to getbusy with a mop and broom isalways motivated by the samething: it’s that accusing beamof sunlight that shows us up infront of guests.

Designing yourkitchenUsing a designer is the mostexpensive option. Checkwhether they price per hour orper job, and what’s included.A much cheaper option is todesign it yourself, as well assource all components such asunits, worktops and appliances. Many people choose themiddle option of using theirkitchen supplier’s designand installation service. Ifyou’re asked to take your ownmeasurements, be careful:even in a new-build, wallsare not always true and thesurfaces flat. Take at leastthree measurements at floor,work-surface and wall unitheight, and work to the smallestwidth. If you’re using a mid-range orluxury kitchen supplier, youmay be asked to pay a feefor them to measure up andproduce a set of drawings.Comparing pricesWhen comparing prices, ensure that you know exactlywhat you’re buying – a cheapoption can cost considerablymore if you end up payingfor extra work. Ask the rightquestions. Will they disposeof existing fittings? Prepareplumbing and electricalwork? Carry out associatedbuilding work? Fit floor andwall finishes? What about finaldecorating, electrical work

and other carpentry such asshelving? Who will fit worktops, sinks, taps and appliances? Isthere a guarantee and after-sales service?Checking for qualityBudget suppliers will give youmachine-made units, whereasluxury ones offer hand-builtcupboards by cabinet-makers.These aren’t necessarily poorquality, though they will have“plant-on” doors that sit infront of the frame, rather than“in-frame” doors, individuallymade to fit perfectly inside theirframes.DoorsSolid-wood doors withtraditional mortise and tenonjoints are the highest quality.In-frame doors may expandand contract with the humidity.Good suppliers offer an after-sales service to check theirfitting after a few months.Veneered doors are cheaperand easier to maintain. Checkwhether painted doors aremachine-sprayed, or painted byhand with a brush.CarcassesTop-of-the-range carcassesare made of solid wood. Next-level-down ones are usuallymade from plywood or MDFveneer, while cheaper onesare chipboard, sometimes withjust hardboard backs. Checkthe thickness of the chipboard– 18-20mm is a good guide.

HingesPoor hinges are usuallymade from thin metal and willwear so thin that the doorshang unevenly. While manypeople are happy with goodquality Blum or Blumstylehinges (concealed, adjustableand available in a variety ofspecifications), solid brassbutts are better. Checkwhether hinges open through acomplete 180 degree angle.WorktopsVery cheap laminate worktopscan burn, scratch and wearout quickly. High-pressurelaminates are more durablethan low-pressure ones; checkthat the underside is sealedto prevent water damage fromappliances beneath. In a moreluxurious kitchen package, you’ll be offered solid wood(at least 4cm thick is best),granite (3cm), man-made solidsurfaces (such as Corian) oreven glass or concrete.InstallationA good fitter can make anaverage kitchen appearfantastic, whereas poor fittingwill make the most luxuriouskitchen look terrible. Considerthis if you’re planning on doingit yourself. If you’re using afitter, ask to see examples oftheir work. When buying anexpensive, bespoke kitchen,it’s wise to use the company’sown fitters.

Do you like to read? If so, how much do

you read? If not (and I will try not to be too

abrupt when I ask you this), why the hell

not?

Reading is amazing! I love to read. I love

the fact that with just a few simple words

conjured from someone’s brilliant, or

absolutely rubbish, imagination you can

be transported to a new and exciting world

full of fairies and werewolves, or

pretentious detectives. You can read about

a cool, outspoken character or someone

timid and shy, you can go on a fantastical

journey accompanied by a heroine with

an uncanny ability to be in the right place

at the right time or a villain with an

extraordinary talent for mischief.

I have read numerous books over the

years, all of them varying in genre and

context. Some of them were better and

more engaging than others, but all of

them had great ideas whether they were

unique, or classic. I’ve read books about

lost islands filled with undiscovered

treasures, mysteries with unsolved crimes

and humorous novels about the seven

deadly sins personified! Even if these types

of genres aren’t to your liking, there are

thousands of assorted books out there just

waiting for someone to pick them up and

start reading such as biographies, horror

or even romance!

Of course, reading isn’t just for fun.

Reading can help you with your writing

skills, and can give you information on

practically anything. If you are an aspiring

author or journalist, you are probably

encouraged to read things out of your

comfort zone to ‘expand your vocabulary’

and whatnot. You can mock but I’ve found

that this is actually true and has probably

helped make me the amazing writer I am

today, not to blow my own horn or any-

thing ha-ha!

Reading can also provide an escape for

many people, whether they are unhappy

at home or at school, or maybe they just

have too many responsibilities on their

shoulders. Whatever the reason, some-

times losing yourself in a new and

exciting world is just what some people

need.

So, after reading this article (see, you can

do it!), why don’t you get up and read

something else? Instead of lounging

around in front of the television or the

computer, why don’t you head down to

your local library and open the doorway

into a brand new world? You can read

anything you want; you just have to put

your mind to it. If you’re stuck for what to

read you can find a review on the internet

or a magazine, and remember! Books

aren’t the only thing you can read. If

you’re new to this whole page-turning

malarkey then you can just read a

magazine or even read books on a Kindle

or ipad for those technology nuts out

there.

Well, it’s been absolutely lovely attempting

to convince you that reading is fun, but

I’ve gotta run. There’s a mystery novel

calling my name!

To read or not to read ….. !To read or not to read ….. !To read or not to read ….. !To read or not to read ….. !

Technology isn’t just somethingyou use at home - it can behandy when you’re out andabout too, even if your idea ofout and about means going faroff the beaten track. One of the most useful kinds ofoutdoor technology is GPS, thesatellite system that can workout where we are and helpus find where we want to go.There are all kinds of dedicatedGPS receivers, ranging fromcheaper devices such asGarmin’s £100 eTrex 10 tomore expensive navigatorssuch as Magellan’s Explorist710, which currently costsaround £350.You don’t necessarily need toinvest in stand-alone GPS kit, however, especially now thatsmartphones and tablets canrun very accurate mappingapps - although if you’re takinga phone or tablet into the wilds, onto a boat or anywhere elsenature can destroy it, it’s a verygood idea to invest in someprotection. You can spendridiculous sums on all-weatherprotection, but cases such asGriffin’s Survivor (around £25for phones, £29 for tablets)- something Griffin admits is“ridiculously over-engineered”- wraps your device in military-spec protection for a very

reasonable price. It isn’t pretty, but it’s tough - and that’s whatreally matters here.Technology has even madeits way into the humble torch, which these days boasts LEDillumination and innovativedesigns. Nite Ize’s BugLitLED (around £13) has low, high and strobe modes, isvisible from a mile awayand has rubber feet that youcan twist to attach to almostanything, while head-mountedLED lights range in price fromaround £35 to well over £100.Petzl’s Nao Headtorch (£135)is a bit over the top for theodd walk in the woods, butfor serious running and othersports its sensor ensures auniform level of brightnessirrespective of how light or darkconditions become. The most famous outdoorsgadget is probably the SwissArmy Knife with its arrayof tools, but these daysyou’re more likely to carry aLeatherman or one of its manyimitators. With prices rangingfrom around £30 to £100 fororiginals and considerably lessfor clones, the range offersall-in-one devices with toolssuch as pliers, knives, saws, bottle and can openers, wirecutters, screwdrivers and even

scissors. If you’re planning to be outsidefor a long time, you’ll need toeat - and gadgets can helpyou with that too. Jetboil’s ZipStove (£75) is a gas stovegiven a high-tech twist: itsheat exchanger means it canboil half a litre in just over twominutes, and its neoprenejacket keeps things warmer forlonger. Meanwhile the BioLiteCampStove (£150) takes thehumble campfire into the 21stcentury: as it burns twigs, bark or pinecones it generateselectricity, which powers a fan, which fans the flames for betterheat efficiency and less smoke- and there’s enough power leftover to recharge your lights, phone or MP3 player. If you need to rechargegadgets but don’t fancylugging a stove around, nomatter how portable, youmight be better off with amonkey - and by monkeywe mean a Powermonkey, such as the PowermonkeyDiscovery. Charge it beforeyou go, and when your phoneor other digital device runsout of puff the Powermonkeycan recharge it twice if it’s aniPhone and three to four timesif it’s a standard mobile phone.Expect to pay around £45.

because Macclesfield Youth Club,Macclesfield Youth Club,Macclesfield Youth Club,Macclesfield Youth Club, (MYC for short)

will open its doors for the first time!! Based at the Fermain Youth Centre on Oxford RoadFermain Youth Centre on Oxford RoadFermain Youth Centre on Oxford RoadFermain Youth Centre on Oxford Road,

MYC is described by the founders as a normal youth club but with a BIG 21st century twist!

The idea for MYC came about one day last July when Antony Allen, Founder and Chairman,

was looking at what provision was on offer for his own 12 year old son and was shocked to

discover all the “old” youth clubs of his experience had shut. Thinking back, Antony recalled;

“It was hard to take. They had all ceased operating and it genuinely stirred something insideme. I don’t want to sounds like a hippy or something but I just knew I had to do somethingabout it.”He took to social media to see what the rest of the town felt about the situation and the

message received was loud and clear; another youth club was needed and quickly. So in

Antony’s head, the decision was made.

Immediately and thankfully up stepped a good friend, Nick Pettigrew who loved the idea so

one became two and they set out to open MYC as soon as they could. Within weeks, more fell

under the “MYC spell” so a committee was formed with Amanda Whittaker (Treasurer) and

Ross Massey (Events & Fundraising Manager) completing the management team. MYC was

officially alive – but not quite kicking.

Co-founder and Club Secretary Nick said; “From the feedback we got,yes it was obvious that a youth club would be a welcome addition tothe current youth provision portfolio the town has. But what was lessapparent was why the old clubs disappeared. Our research soonhighlighted it wasn’t necessarily a case of no money, no volunteers,no buildings although these factors played a small part. It was moreto do with the old ‘table tennis and tuck shop’ model of youth clubshad failed to move with the times. Young People have a million & one

possibilities to engage with nowadays. So we knew from day one, if we were to succeed wehad to take what was good about old youth clubs but inject a 21st century infusion.”Nick aims to ensure the club engages with today’s tech-savvy young people; “We havecreated what we call the ‘MYC Alliance’ and this will be the conduit that enables us to team upwith as many local groups or individuals that run activities for young people. So, if you wantto come down and just chill out and yes, play table tennis and use the tuck shop, fantastic. But, if you want to write music, street-dance, paint – whatever! We will try to make it happenvia our continuous outreach programs.”Thanks to its affiliation with the Youth Federation, parents will be pleased to know that the

club conforms to all youth voluntary group guidelines with every policy and procedure in

place. Ensuring young people are free to develop and enjoy themselves in a well-run, secure

yet fun environment. Although more is always needed, funds have been raised through its

own activity and a grant from Peaks & Plains. Plus, subsequent social media activity means

the MYC team can now boast to be an impressive 15-strong following the successful

volunteer recruitment drive.

Who can you turn to when the medical profession has let you down?Who can you turn to when the medical profession has let you down?Who can you turn to when the medical profession has let you down?Who can you turn to when the medical profession has let you down?

Leading Cheshire law firm Jobling Gowler, say changes to legislation being made by

the Government on 1st April 2013, will lead to significant restrictions on the availability

of legal aid funding for many medical negligence claims.

Partner Simon Gowler says that, “Legal Aid will no longer be available for medical

negligence claims except in a very limited number of cases involving children who

have suffered a brain injury during their mother’s pregnancy, during the course of

their delivery/birth or during the first 8 weeks after their birth.

Any other victims of medical negligence who do not satisfy those criteria will be

unable to use Legal Aid to pursue their medical negligence claims.”

In addition there are further changes to the funding of medical negligence claims

from 1st April 2013 which will make it less attractive for Claimants to bring medical

negligence claims. This is because it is unlikely that they will retain 100% of their

compensation and will have to contribute towards their legal costs in most cases.

Mr Gowler says “the implications are clear – if you or a loved one has been injured as a

result of medical negligence DO NOT DELAYDO NOT DELAYDO NOT DELAYDO NOT DELAY in seeking immediate professional

advice.”

Jobling Gowler Solicitors are your local specialist medical negligence lawyers. They

have four specialist medical negligence solicitors each with over 15 years’ experience

of medical negligence claims. The firm holds a contract with the Legal Services

Commission and is able to offer Legal Aid for medical negligence cases, while it

remains available.
