The Borough of Collegeville is located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania at the intersection of the Ridge Pike, the Germantown Pike, and Rt. 29. The Borough is 1.6 square miles in size and has a population of approximately 4,600 residents with about 1,300 more when Ursinus College is in session.

As a result of its historic role as a commercial crossroad, and its location between the Perkiomen Valley and the Rt. 422 Expressway, the Borough of Collegeville has become the town center of a region which has taken its name. The Borough consists of: a historic commercial Main Street, a

commercial Main Street, the Ursinus College campus, and a mix of residential neighborhoods.

The Borough of Collegeville is a great place to live, work, and play. We are a close-knit community, and take great pride in our neighborhoods, streets, and parks. Our merchants provide many of the goods and services for the region and yet we are close to the premium shopping malls in King of Prussia and Plymouth Meeting. We are home to Ursinus College, a highly regarded Liberal Arts college, and next door to the Wyeth World Headquarters and many other corporate employers and providers.

The Historic Commercial Main StreetThe Ridge Pike as it passes through

the Borough is called Main Street. Main Street is the location of the original town, literally, because until the mid 20th century, the Main Street was surrounded almost exclusively by farms.

Main Street is still the location of many of the merchants and businesses in the Borough as well as the Ursinus College campus. Many of the businesses retain their original building facades which range in style from the Victorian to the 1940s. Ursinus College maintains several 18th and 19th century farmhouses including Clamer Hall, Fetteroff House, and the Andrew Todd house, now known as Isenberg Hall.

There are also many large homes on Main Street, some of which served as boarding houses for the Pennsylvania Female College, and after the railroad was built, summer vacationers. They are now a mix of private homes and businesses with the exception of the houses of the Residential Village the restored victorian homes located directly across from the Ursinus College campus and used by the college as off campus housing.

Main Street businesses are a mixture of traditional merchants, village commercial, professional offi ces, and restaurants.

The Commercial Main StreetAs the main north/south connector

between the Perkiomen Valley portion of the Collegeville region and the Rt. 422 Expressway, Rt. 29 (also known as First and Second Avenue in the Borough) has shifted much of the commercial focus within the Borough from the traditional Main Street. Thus, a new commercial Main Street has developed here to supplement the traditional Main Street.

Beginning with the Collegeville Shopping Center and a few commercial establishments near Main Street, the commercial Main Street was extended southward with the addition of the Marketplace Shopping Center and the Collegeville Professional Center. Other businesses have fi lled in between them.

The commercial Main Street includes food markets, several restaurants, many professional offi ces, and a wide assortment of other goods and services.

Additional opportunities for development exist on the commercial Main Street at the Mid-Atlantic Equipment tract on Rt. 29S, and at the Harleysville tract at the intersection of Rt. 29N and Main Street. There are also opportunities for commercial use on East and West Third Avenue and the Collegeville Station.

Current and planned zoning for this part of the Borough provides continued commercial opportunities via the Commercial Offi ce, General Commercial, Main Street Commercial,

and Residential Offi ce zoning. In addition, a Main Street revitalization project is underway to preserve and protect its character.

    BOROUGHOfficials TTTTBOROUGHBOROUGHInformationInformationTrappeThe Augustus Lutheran Church

The Borough was settled in 1717 and formally incorporated in 1896. The Augustus Lutheran Church, the oldest unchanged Lutheran Church building in continuous use in the United States, is located in the Borough, as is the homestead of Frederick Muhlenberg, signer of the Bill of Rights and fi rst Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Borough government consists of an elected Mayor and a seven Member Council. A professional manager, employed at the will of Council, is responsible for day-to-day administration of the Borough.

Storefronts along West Main StreetApproximately 3,200 people call

Trappe Borough home. The Borough is located in central Montgomery County, about a one-hour drive from Center City, Philadelphia. While primarily a bedroom community, the Borough possesses modest agricultural, industrial and commercial uses. The Boroughs main thoroughfare, West Main Street, boasts many retail and specialty shops... reminiscent of the quaint country villages that once dotted the Pennsylvania landscape.

The Perkiomen Trail is a 19-mile multi-use public trail for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and equestrians. The Trail was developed and is maintained by the Montgomery County Department of Parks and will link the countys parks strung along the Perkiomen Creek.

The Trail passes through the Borough from the south side near Rt. 29 and Park Avenue to the north side near Rt. 29 and Ninth Avenue. In between it passes behind the Shopping Centers of the Boroughs merchant district; crosses Main Street at Third Avenue; and straddles the wooded ridge behind the Ursinus College campus.

As it passes through the Borough the Trail becomes another link in the Boroughs network of sidewalks. The 10-foot wide Trail is mostly paved but some portions are cinder-covered. Still the surface is hard and appropriate for strollers and wagons as well as joggers and walkers. According to John Woods, chief of the countys open space planning, in the future the trails entire length may be paved. We want it to be available to people with special needs, he said.

    STATESTATEParkParkEvansburg

Evansburg State Park is in south-central Montgomery County between Norristown and Collegeville. Evans-burg offers a signifi cant area of green space and relative solitude in an urbanized area. Its main natural feature, the Skippack Creek, has dissected the land into ridges and valleys that create feelings of enclosures and provide scenic views.

The narrow valley was fi rst settled and farmed by Mennonites who also powered their industries with the water of the Skippack. Even now, mill remnants, mill buildings and houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth century dot the park landscape and serve as reminders of early American life.

Today, the park is a quiltwork of cropland, meadows, old fi elds and mature woodlands that attracts day use visitors from the Montgomery County and Philadelphia areas. People come to the open play fi elds, picnic areas, trails, golf course and the relatively tranquil, natural environments.

WMU LITTLE STRIKERS PROGRAMThis enjoyable program for 3 to 5 year olds gets the little tykes started early to get out and begin kicking the ball and having fun.

INTRAMURAL PROGRAMOur Intramural Program is the lifeblood of the club. Children start here and grow their talents. Intramu-ral soccer is a fun program for players ages 4 17. Teams are formed so that practices are close to home. Games are usually played at HillTop Farm, our beautiful, 37-acre facility at 560 Royersford Road in Limerick. Our intramural program has been in existence since 1976. We pride ourselves on being the best soccer program in the area. Our intra-murals begin with a new program called Little Strik-ers for 3 and 4 year old preschool children. Then we have divisions for U4 co-ed, U5 co-ed, U6 girls and boys, U7 girls and boys, U8 girls and boys,U9 girls and boys, U10 girls and boys, U11 girls and boys, U12 girls and boys, U13 girls and boys. All players receive a game shirt and matching socks.

SUBURBAN COUNTIES SOCCER LEAGUEThis program is for the oldest group of our children, ages 13-17. Players are formed into coed teams in U14 and older age groups. The teams participate in the Suburban Counties Soccer League (SCSL), which is comprised of the Coventry, Pottsgrove, Pottstown, Phoenixville, and Boyertown clubs and possibly others. The games are on Saturdays, with week night practices. Teams travel to the various clubs to play (all are within 15-25 minutes), and half of the games are played at home.

TRAVEL SOCCER PROGRAMThe Travel Program is for the player who wants a more competitive level of play. Travel players come from the Intramural Program. Annual tryouts give children the opportunity to move up to this level. The Travel Program training prepares them for their Middle School and High School teams. Teams play against other competitive teams throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania and sometimes more far reaching.

PREMIER SOCCER PROGRAMThe Premier Program develops the player who has demonstrated the highest level of commitment and desire to progress in their game. Our premier teams play year-round, compete in State Cup tournaments, and work with professional, paid trainers or coach-es. We offer the committed player the opportunity to compete at the highest levels of play. We prepare players technically and tactically to participate as members of high school, college, state, regional, and Olympic Development teams.

TRAVEL & PREMIER TRYOUTSTryouts are conducted annually in the spring for Fall Travel and Premier teams. Tryouts are held for 3 or 4 dates for each age group. This gives the evaluators an opportunity to view the players in multiple types of situations in order to assess their readiness to play on a team and at what level.

TOP SOCCER PROGRAMThe Outreach Program for Soccer is the offi cial US Youth Soccer program enriching the lives of young athletes with disabilities through the game of soccer. West-Mont United runs a TOP Soccer program in the Fall.

Montgomery County established the parks department in 1939 and in 2005, the Department of Parks and the Department of Historic and Cultural Arts merged into a single department; the Department of Parks & Heritage Services (PHS). PHS, with assistance from a twelve-member appointed advisory Board, is responsible for creating, enhancing and sustaining the open space system consisting of county parks, historic sites, natural areas, trails, and greenways.

Montgomery County owns and/or manages more than six thousand acres of public open space, including eight parks, a major natural area, fi ve historic sites, and lands along four primary county greenways. 34 miles of existing county trails that were joined by another 28 miles developed in 2007.

These assets are the existing components of the Countys Open Space System. PHS strives to conserve,

manage and enhance the Countys natural and cultural resources and support and promote its visions and values. We adhere to an interdisciplinary, cooperative approach to provide quality landscape environments, facilities, programs, and special events that meet County-wide needs for recreation and leisure.

Each location offers unique opportunities to enjoy your favorite recreational activity, or participate in environmental and historical events and programs.

Any group or organization wishing to list their event on the County Web page, must contact the Department of Parks and Heritage Services at 610-278-3555. Please allow a minimum of 30 days advance notice to the County, so the event can be mounted on the Countys web page. The notice will be removed immediately following the date of the event.

    & Trails

Montgomery County offers its residents and visitors a premier trail system. The Montgomery County Department of Parks and Heritage Services is responsible for constructing and maintaining all county trails. We currently have 52 miles of regional county trails that connect greenways, waterways, and heritage corridors within Montgomery County. In addition, we plan to construct 10 more miles by the end of 2008.

We diligently enhance, promote, and protect these valuable natural assets. We strive to provide trail visitors with an exceptional experience while they traverse through Montgomery County on foot, bicycle, or even horseback.

Any individual or organization that wishes to use the Trails for an event must fi rst contact the Park Superintendent where the event will take place to register the event or activity. Organizers that wish to use

a County Park/Trail will be asked to complete an Application for Special Use for approval by the Park Superintendent and Parks Director. All events must be registered. Please register your event at least 90 days before your event date to assure that there are no confl icts and give the Parks Department suffi cient time to process your event registration. There may be a small fee associated with the registration. Event organizers are also reminded that the trail should be left in as good or better condition after the event, including the removal of all trash and signs. No events will be scheduled that will preclude regular visitation to the trail or that will require the closure of the trail to the general public. No races (walking/running/biking/equestrian) will be permitted. Organizations looking to use a County Trail for fund-raising purposes, must be a registered non-profi t organization, or be able to provide information that all proceeds will be donated to a non-profi t organization or agency.

    ttractions The picturesque, rolling hillsides

of 3,600-acre Valley Forge National Historical Park are a peaceful reminder of freedom won by mens sacrifi ces long ago. It was here that General George Washington forged his Continental Army into a fi ghting force, during the winter encampment of 1777-78.

No battles were fought, no bayonet charges or artillery bombardments took place. Nonetheless, some 2,000 soldiers died more Americans than were killed at the battles of Brandywine and

Germantown combined. Valley Forge is the story of an armys epic struggle to survive against terrible odds, hunger and disease.

Here, too, is a reminder of our nations diversity. Washingtons troops were the most racially integrated of any army our country fi elded, up until Vietnam. An estimated 5,000 soldiers of African descent served in the Continental Army. Native Americans also played a role; members of the Oneida Indian Nation in particular had a crucial impact during the Valley Forge encampment.

Today, Washingtons original stone headquarters has been restored and furnished; log huts have been reconstructed; and statues and monuments throughout the park remind visitors of our national heritage. Among them are statues of General Mad Anthony Wayne and Baron Friedrich von Steuben; and the Monument to Patriots of African Descent.
