Routine. For me, nothing helps align my world back into routine then the start of the school year. The kids are on a regular schedule and I can plan my weeks accord-ing to the “goings-on” that comes with school activities. Don’t get me wrong, I live for the summers and this one didn’t disap-point. However, there’s something about a schedule that allows my world to operate a little smoother. For this reason I say now is the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate those

goals we tend to set around the first of the year.

Health and fitness are always a focal point of resolutions and I hope this month’s Medical Edition can assist you in the planning process. Check out this month’s article from local Dietician, Megan Hollo-way, who shares some wonderful nutrition tips we can all start right away. For me, this is an Achilles heel. I try to be very conscious of what I eat on a daily basis, but I can also get down on a box of French fries from time to time. Over the last year I’ve joined the craze known as Crossfit. I even entered my first competition in July. This exciting new fitness phenomenon is spreading across the country and making quite a splash here in our community, as well. And it’s all for good reason. It’s just flat-out fun! Plus, it’s great for all ages and fitness levels and challenges you every day. I’ve even talked my husband into join-ing me in the fun. I overheard him at my competition lean to another husband in our group and ask, “Did you ever think you’d be cheering your wife on at her weightlifting contest?” I had to laugh because I certainly wouldn’t have imagined I’d ever be in one. Whatever your aspirations are, the important thing is to have some. Get active, eat better, and start enjoying life a little more.

It’s important to note, that this is one of the biggest editions we do all year so make sure you keep this magazine in a safe place. We think it’s the perfect resource for anything medical and you simply never know when you’ll need one of the professionals inside. Good luck to all of those embarking on another school year and remember to see the positives in getting back into a solid routine. Before I go, help me welcome Holli Younger to the Local Life Team! We’re excited to have her experience serving our local business owners and wish her much success. As always, we’ll see you on the streets!

aas fall comes RollinG aRound, we usu-ally start to get back into our routines now that the kids are back in school and vacations are behind us. Something that many forget about now that we are busy running errands, keeping up with our job, and trying to be in many places at once is our health. How are we supposed to have the energy to complete our everyday tasks without a healthy diet? Now when you hear the word “diet,” you usually think “here we go again with some miracle food that is supposedly going to make me shed pounds and turn my body into that of a super-model’s.” Well that’s not necessarily the point! As human beings, we should work toward a healthy diet for longevity and good health. Let’s focus on the top ten tips for “Falling into a New Diet.”

Look at what time you are putting the first bite of food in your mouth. Is this 3 hours after you get up or three minutes? To focus on speeding up your

metabolism (our body’s calorie burning ma-chine), it is important to eat your first meal or snack as soon as you get out of bed. As a di-etitian, I would prefer you eating a substantial carbohydrate/protein combination meal, but some people tend to be nauseous when add-ing food back into your mornings. Try a shake with Greek yogurt and fruit. Adding oatmeal and peanut butter can also give you even more protein and a source of fiber.

Always include a protein source with every carbohy-drate you consume. Carbo-hydrates consist of fruit, bread,

and into a new lifestyle focused on your

health and nutrition! 1

grains, pasta, sugary vegetables, basically anything that offers your body sugar for en-ergy. These foods are very important for our energy levels but at the same time they spike our blood sugar and it can be stored if not used rapidly. When we add a protein source to these foods such as lean meat, nuts, eggs, beans, or soy protein, we are allowing our blood sugar levels to stabilize long enough to stay full un-til the next snack rolls around and giving our body the opportunity to put that sugar to use instead of storage.

Focus on adding variety to your fruits and vegetables. Eat the rainbow! Every color of-fers different vitamins and miner-als. When we strive for 3 different

colors per day, we are decreasing a risk of vita-min and mineral deficiency.

Remember to include at least 3 servings of low fat dairy in your diet per day. This is an extremely important factor to keep our bones strong as

we age. If you are lactose intolerant or have sensitivity, there are many substitutes such

as almond, soy, and rice milk that eliminate the need for lactase. You can find most dairy products such as yogurt and cheese in soy or almond form.

Fiber is the broom to our body! Fiber is a mostly indigest-ible material found in foods such as

vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains. Fi-ber helps to keep the digestive system function-ing properly, as well as helping to keep blood sugars at a tolerable level. It also helps to grab any extra cholesterol or carcinogens floating around in your blood.

Hydrate! Unless instructed by a doctor to limit your fluid intake, drink calorie free beverages often throughout the day. Many studies

suggest dividing your weight in pounds by 2 and drinking that number in ounces of fluid. Caffeinated beverages do not count due to caffeine’s diuretic effect. Caffeine is not rec-ommended at all but for those who do chose to consume these beverages, create a 1:1 com-bination, 1 caffeinated drink for 1 bottle of water.

Eat often. Eating small meals and snacks can help to speed up your metabolism. When you are constantly making your metabo-

lism work throughout the day by fueling it with food, it will speed up over time and burn calories at a faster rate. This helps to fight our metabolism slowing as we age.

Get rid of the chip and cookie bags. Focus on finding healthier alternatives such as raw vegetables and hummus, whole wheat crackers and low fat cheese,

banana and peanut butter, and Greek yogurt.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with non-decadent des-serts. Try making a 100 calories bag of popcorn and mixing in a tablespoon of dark chocolate chips

while it is still hot. Try mixing in 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup in a low fat vanilla yogurt.

Think outside the box to satisfy your sweet tooth in 150 calories or less.

Last but not least, do not stress about dieting or mak-ing a nutritional lifestyle change. The more we stress

about weight loss or making these healthy changes in our lives, the more stress hormones we produce. This in turn allows no progress to be made. As I always tell my clients, I would rather you make small changes and keep them up for years than go cold turkey and see you back at square one in a month. Habit forma-tion takes time, and those little key changes can lead to a lifetime of optimal health.

What you may remember as a teen night club hosting acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers is now 1 building over and a nostalgic bar and grill chock-full of menu items with throwback names. Owner Cary Moon was such a teen and bought the naming rights and logo to Dalton’s Corner to start giving tours down memory lane. Go check ‘em out today! 200 S. Main St. Burleson, TX (Old Town) (817) 295-5456 $-$$ L D

Grump’s • “It’s about time you got here!” New to Burleson, Grumps is not new to the burger – or service for that matter. With a laid-back environment, friendly faces, and a brand-new second story patio, this is the perfect wind down spot for all. Great food, cold beer, and plenty of HDTV’s lets us know they’ll soon be a regular. Just eat it! 108 S. Main Old Towne Burleson, TX 817-447-8800 + $ L D ®

Pier 35 • The newest addition to the seafood scene in Burleson is quickly becoming a local favorite. Jalapeño Corndodgers are a good

start to a great selection of seafood entrées. Fish, shrimp, crawfish, and more await you at the table. And the large bar area is an added bonus! 950 N. Burleson Blvd. Burleson, TX 76028 (817) 295-7137 $$ L D

Spice Rack Tapas Bar & Grill • From a great staff and environment to the patio and live music, “The Rack” is soon becoming a fan favorite in Old Town. Organic produce and LOCAL from Walnut Creek Farm (we like that part!) fills out a menu that is simple but delectable. Start with the Wedge salad and move on to the Venison Tacos, or just cozy up to the bar with some stuffed jalapeno’s or sliders and a cold beverage. 133
