Halloween is in the books and we’re grateful for all of the wonderful entrants into our annual Costume Contest. Look for the winners in next month’s edition. This month there is lots to do! First up, is the 3rd Annual Burleson Wine Crawl. This year promises to be bigger and better than last. Local Life is proud to be the creator of the Wine Crawl Passport and we hope to see you all on No-

vember 9th in Old Town. It’s an event you won’t want to miss.

Hopefully, you’ve all started checking off those names on your holiday shopping list. Procrastination is not your friend in this arena, trust me. Be sure to check out our article inside on planning and getting that perfect gift. Small Business Saturday is November 30th and it’s nice to know you won’t have to drive far to take care of those you love. Finally, this is the season for giving thanks. I’ve always loved the Thanksgiving holiday because of what it represents. It reminds us all to slow down a bit and pay attention to the things we have. Often it feels like we’re running 100 miles per hour working to get those things we don’t have. It’s nice to reflect on just how blessed we are. Really. Hug your loved ones. Better yet, do something crazy and tell them how much they mean to you. And, if you’re like my husband, don’t forget your stretchy pants! This is the day for eating. And, that boy can put away some groceries! My long lost sister will be joining us this year and I am overcome with excitement. This will be my first experience celebrating a holiday with a sibling. I am thankful and I plan on letting my people know. I hope you’ll do the same.

This year, strive to achieve the gift-giving trifecta

in a perfect world, we’d never have to make that last-minute gift run on our way to Grandma’s house for the gift exchange. We’d never gift any-thing seen on a late-night infomercial. And every gift we’d give would be based on thoughtful con-sideration for the recipient. In a perfect world....

In the real world, it seems there’s always one last gift to get. Things like an orange Snuggie and

the Fanny Bank (yes, this really exists) are far too available in a pinch. And gift cards have replaced thoughtful consideration for the recipient (not that they aren’t sometimes the perfect gift). This year, let’s agree to try a little harder.

Trying harder does not mean spending more money or more time shopping, but it does require more thoughtful planning.

1 Start by making a list of everyone on your gift-giving list. This may sound obvi-ous, but I would bet that many of your lists only exist in your head or maybe scribbled on the back of a receipt. This time, write out a detailed list on a real

piece of paper. Don’t forget teachers, neighbors, bosses and perhaps that random coworker who unexpectedly got you something last year.

2 Next, set the dollar amount you plan to spend on each recipient. Take into account things like shipping costs, whether you buy online or have to ship the gift to the recipient. That stuff adds up.

3 Now, take a few minutes to brainstorm gift ideas. Shopping with no idea of what you’re looking for pretty much guarantees you’ll waste plenty of time, sanity and holiday spirit aimlessly wandering from store to store, waiting for

the perfect gift to jump out at you.

4 Finally, start early. I know we’ve barely finished putting up the Halloween stuff and are just beginning to make Thanksgiving plans, but holiday shopping in a perfect world means starting early. I can tell you from ex- per ience

that some of the best deals of the holiday shopping season are found before Thanksgiving. Last year, I bought ten per-sonalized fleece blankets from the Disney store for $10 each in early November. Free personalization, free shipping. I got just about every kid on my list taken care of in one fell swoop.


From here, think how you can achieve the gift-giving trifecta. What’s that? It’s getting the per-fect product, at the right price, from the best place. Yes, I just made that up, but that’s because I want us all to be responsible shoppers this year. Getting the perfect product at the right price are pretty obvious goals, but it may be hard for some to accept that the best place is not necessarily the store with the lowest price. The best place is the store that appreciates your business the most.

Sales during the holiday shopping season can make or break just about any business, big or small. Big businesses have bank accounts and investors to bail them out of a slump. Small busi-nesses typically don’t. This year, I urge you to buy at least one gift from a small business in our area. I am terribly guilty of feeding the Ama-zon.com monster, but I pledge—in writing, for thousands to see—to buy at least one gift that is not mass produced and available everywhere. I pledge to shop small.

You’ve likely heard of Small Business Saturday, a wonderful idea conceived by American Express a few years ago. If you haven’t heard of it before, you’ll likely see it mentioned a few dozen times in this magazine. Small Business Saturday is ob-served on the first Saturday following Thanks-giving. This year, that is November 30. Many small businesses offer great savings just for shop-pers observing this tradition. You’ll find many examples of these offers throughout Local Life.

Is the toy you bought from that big-box chain store going to help keep business afloat? Prob-ably not. But that, plus a few other purchases, could make that kind of impact on a small busi-ness. Can’t shop on the “official” Small Business Saturday? I’m sure our small businesses will take your money other days as well. Can’t find the perfect gift at a local, small business? Shop at a local, big business! Companies like JCPenney, RadioShack, Fossil, Pier 1, GameStop, FedEx, Michaels and many others are headquartered in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Shopping at these stores not only helps support the local store, but thousands of other local jobs at the companies’ headquarters.

This year, save yourself time and headaches by carefully considering your shopping list ahead of time. Then, be a hero! Achieve the gift-giving trifecta by finding the perfect product, at the right price, from the best place. Pledge to shop small and local.
