I THINK I OWE EVERYONE an apology… I had to have these super cute rain boots for Christmas this year and, of course, needed it to rain so I could properly get my money’s worth. I might’ve wished a little too hard. Holy cow, we’ve had some gushers lately! My bad. Summer is on the way, so fear not. May delivers all the beauty that arrives from those April showers and I just love seeing the local landscape this time of year. May also means a celebration of Moms and I’m a bit of a fan of that, as well.

I’m kicking off the month with a trip to see my cousin in Connecticut. I know the landscape will be equally as beautiful there and I’m in much need of a getaway. This momma’s going solo, which I’m happy to report I am very excited about! I love my family, but looking after me and only me for a week sounds like a nice change. Sometimes the job of mom can just fl at out take a toll on you. Your kids, any fur babies you may have, that bigger kid you married, neighbors, employees and co-workers are all pulling on your head space and it gets taxing. Please don’t misunderstand. I truly see each of these as a blessing. I love my little circle and can’t believe how fortunate I am. But, eeeevery now and then it sure doesn’t hurt to fi nd a little ME-time. I encourage you ladies to heed my advice on this one. Plus, nothing beats the reunion when you get back home after missing those sweet faces for an extended period of time. It’s about as solid as snuggle time gets around my house!

We are slowly getting to know our Mansfi eld neighbors through some of their great events. We recently did Third Thursday, which occurs monthly in Historic Downtown. Shop hours are extended and it’s a great day to shop, hang, and play starting at 5 PM. The Local Life ladies defi nitely gathered a few memories this past month. You can expect to see us out there again.

I’ll close as I normally do in May: Hug your mommas! Some of ours were taken way too soon and months like these are hard. It’s not a fun club to be part of but we can certainly cherish the memories. I would also like to lift up the family of Missy Bevers in Midlothian. Three daughters and a husband lost a wonderful mom last month. She was a friend and is missed and loved by so many. Ladies, keep charging forward in the impressive way you do. Fellas, keep loving us back and telling us we’re pretty because we certainly need to hear and feel it. Have a great May and Happy Mother’s Day. I’ll see ya on the streets!

In their body, they can carry, feed, protect, and eventually deliver a child who grows into a human being like you and me. Amazing! They sacrifice, often setting aside personal

goals and professional aspirations for the sake of family. Day after day they are usually the ones who manage and referee the boxing ring called the home, a place of overwhelming, ever-changing, and ever-undone competing demands. They are most often the more present and engaged parent as boys and girls very quickly morph into young men and young women. Through adoption and marriage, many moms welcome sons and daughters into their home and heart whom they didn’t even welcome into the world through birth.

We cannot celebrate and say thank you enough to these women.

Thank you moms!

My mom is one of the most precious gifts my dad ever gave me and my sisters. My dad worked hard, moonlighting jobs as needed so mom could be home during our formative years. My mom was hands on, working to shape me into a man who knew how to love and dream, learn, work and be self-disciplined, to be a man of courage while still being sensitive, especially toward women. By her own example, mom taught us the value of laboring toward worthwhile goals, like a healthy marriage, raising children while pursuing college degrees and careers that require giving our best. She modeled sacrifice and the value of giving and receiving truckloads of grace. Most of all my mom inspired me to be a man after God’s heart.

The work of motherhood can’t be outsourced. Boys become strong men of integrity and girls become wise and beautiful women through consistent care

and attention, bold and grace-filled instruction, and real-life modeling. This requires quality time. Ideally both mom and dad have a role to play in this parenting process, but God has placed this priority on the mother in a most unusual way. No one loves like a mom!

The weight of motherhood is especially heavy upon women who by death, disability, divorce, abandonment or other life surprises find themselves working feverishly to bring home the bacon, manage the house and earn a college degree while serving as both mom and dad. I am amazed and in awe of single moms who work long, long hours and juggle the duties of child rearing while sacrificing personal goals and simple pleasures. Something hard, Christ-like, miraculous and beautiful, happens in single mothering.

Thank you single moms!

Some mothers, for whatever the reason, don’t have a choice to be home more. They have to work long, long hours for the wellbeing of their family. They too are to be commended and celebrated for their sacrifices and burden-bearing. Sometimes they have to lean more heavily on their family and faith community in raising their children and that’s okay. Healthy, whole extended families and churches have each other’s back. That is God’s design.

Thank you working moms!

As we approach Mother’s Day, I want to encourage us to recover our appreciation and respect for the work of moms, the shaping of boys and girls, year by year, hour by hour, meal by meal, laundry load by laundry load, mundane moment by mundane moment into healthy women and men. I want us to recover the awe and wonder of motherhood.

momma’s boy. I am almost 61 years of age but I still stop by her house as often as I can for one of her hugs. My mom inspires me with her love for God, dad, life and Texas Rangers Baseball. She reads her bible, walks five miles almost every day and is a power smart phone user. Mom reads for personal growth, transports cancer patients for treatment, serves at her church, puts up with dad (LOL), cooks, laughs and has enough love for all of her married children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I have not always been the son she raised me to be, but her grace filled ways have always invited me back into her arms.

I know all moms don’t measure up to our needs

and expectations. Some moms are so broken and messed up, the roles are reversed and the child parents the parent. My prayer for you is somewhere in your life circle there is a woman you can celebrate because she chose to love you when your own mother couldn’t or wouldn’t. If nothing else, thank God this mother’s day that your biological mom carried you full term and delivered you into this world.

From time to time, we like to shine the spotlight on some of our local businesses and loyal Local Life advertisers. House of Frames perfectly demonstrates how a local business can have an expansive impact beyond our cities. For over 40 years, House of Frames has been providing the Crowley/Burleson area with quality custom framing, but at one time, it had over 60 stores spread across the country. In the mid-1990s the company chose to divest itself of the other locations and focus on connecting with and serving the local community.

“Home” for House of Frames is a large commercial building right off I-35. While the large building may not appear to be open to the public, it absolutely is. In fact the owner Burl Hollingsworth says, “90% of our customer base lives right in this area.” Many of its customers come from referrals, which has allowed House of Frames to serve the Crowley/Burleson community for so many years.

Because custom framing is not something most people need on a regular basis, House of Frames strives to make the experience as pleasant, rewarding and stress-free as possible. Mr. Hollingsworth emphasizes about this local business that “We” aren’t “Them.” In other words, plenty of big box stores also do framing, but they simply can’t do it as well or as inexpensively as House of Frames. Don’t be fooled by those 60% off discounts from its competitors, House of Frames buys directly from manufacturers,

so there’s no middleman to infl ate the prices. In fact, House of Frames supplies many other frame shops in the metroplex with their merchandise. The company buys and sells for less and has the merchandise in stock when customers order. As for quality and effi ciency, much of the company’s business comes from customers who were referred by a local big box store that simply can’t handle the complicated job or can’t meet the customer’s quick turnaround times. With all work done in house by experienced professionals, these challenges are nothing for House of Frames.
