One mOnth! Slightly over 30 days to go until school is out and any semblance of scheduled chaos is out the window. That’s right, it’s May. And May means, for this Mama, to get ready to embrace full-on chaos. Do not stop at Go. Do not collect $200! (Raise your hand if you remember that reference.) Field trips and end of school parties will help me ease into the madness, I suppose. I am

a mom, however, and I suppose I’m as ready as I’ll ever be. Mother to two daughters, 2 cats, 1 dog, and 1 man-child should have me used to this cloud of dust on the rise. May also brings the celebration of “us”. You know who you are ladies – Wonder Woman in disguise. The rest of the world politely refers to it as Mother’s Day.

It’s a tough job and I’m excited to announce Local Life’s first ever “My Amazing Mom” contest. Be sure to follow close on FB and nominate that amazing mother or grandmother who goes above the call of duty. There’s a wonderful prize pack involved from some great local businesses. God created us all with the uncanny ability to multi-task like no other and my sweet friend, Brittany, describes the challenges in this month’s featured article.

I just love this issue! I also love the fact that I’m getting a lit-tle closer to a much needed vacation with the fam’. No alarm clocks, no deadlines, and lots of room service. Yes, please! The crack of dawn can take a timeout from my life for a week or so. Hopefully, you are looking forward to some much-needed R&R, as well. If not, take a 15-minute hiatus and escape to this month’s edition of Local Life. We’ll do what we can to entertain a little and provide as many local resources as possible. After all, that’s what we do! I wish you all a wonderful Mother’s Day this month. Take advantage of those mother figures in your life and tell them how special they are to you. Hug ‘em. You never know how many precious moments you have left. Heck, take her shopping and make sure to shop LOCAL! It helps us all. I know I’ll be out there. Until next month, we’ll see you on the street!

I write this as I sit in the drive-thru line at my children’s elementary school. I’m awaiting the bell to ring so I can see their sweet faces run out and tell me how they did on their very first STAAR test. My life is a cluster of days filled with controlled chaos at best. On my worst day, I fail at all three of my jobs—not counting that small commitment we call Motherhood. Oh that. About that… focus Brittany! How DO we do it all?

Moms that is, specifically working Moms. Now, before I get hate mail alluding to the fact that I didn’t show appreciation for stay at home Moms, let me say this: I 100% think that THAT is the hardest job on the planet. How do I know? Because I’ve been there, done that, with three kids under 18 months… have the T-shirt! I get it. I promise. However, for today’s purposes, I am speaking about the working Mom. The Mom that is expected to be 100% in an area of her life that probably in most cases, unless you are truly blessed to do your dream job, isn’t quite as important to her as her family.

I could really make this article fancy by giving you my very best Pinterest worthy tips on how to improve your work/life balance, but that would be so predictable and just annoying. The truth is, we are freaking miracle workers who juggle an average of 15 balls at the same time and it’s really, really hard and some days near impossible.

We are Wonder Woman! We truly are! On any given day we wake up and shower before the rest of the family, get kids up, feed kids, pack lunches, make beds, start a load of laundry, put away breakfast dishes, feed the dogs, take kids to school, see 10 clients for work, call the pharmacy then the insurance company about that prescription you needed yesterday, make a

doctor appointment for a child, wish a friend or family member Happy Birthday, run into the store for milk on your way home, pick-up said children from school or daycare (bless it!), get that snow cone you promised the kids that morning, homework with your daughter, take sons to baseball while coordinating a car pool to gymnastics for your daughter, run the track at the park where baseball practice is to get your daily exercise, pick up kids from activities, make dinner, clean up dinner, give baths, kisses, hugs, and put to bed, reenter room to steal iPod from children, check your emails, post to Facebook about life for loved ones enjoyment of your precious ones, and then give that husband over there looking like a lost puppy some attention so that he stays happy, pick up the house, wash your face and crash only to wake up and do it all over again tomorrow. Bless it! It CAN be done because YOU. ARE. WONDER. WOMAN!

I have always said that I think every woman on earth should have to spend 3 months of their lives being a waitress. I truly think that. It is the best on the job training I ever received for what it is like to be a working mommy. It teaches you how to juggle and prioritize demands to maximize satisfaction of each of your tables needing you to fill their needs. Compare this experience to real life as a working Mom and I believe it’s the best boot camp one can do for motherhood.

I survive my days by maximizing my impact on satisfaction in all important areas of my life with the minimum of effort. I don’t leave the house without thinking about and writing down specific goals for the day—what HAS to be done, what I’d LIKE to do, and what I’m going to say NO to that day. Don’t let that last part get lost on you. I said “What I’m going to say NO to today.” This part is crucial. If you are like me, then your list will consist of what you have to do for work that


day, what you would like to get done for your family that day, then another list of random want-tos like make a wreath for the front door, use that gift card that you received a year ago for Christmas for a facial, train for a 5K for that charity that your friend is raising money for, or host a barbeque for your small group at church. Something HAS to give. So, each day I give myself permission to take a few things off of the list. This is my saving grace, my survival, the only way I can be intentional about trying to be and do everything that all my people need me to be and do. Whew, I’m tired just saying that.

I tackle my responsibilities first and foremost, then I spend time doing what REALLY matters to me. Baseball practice with my boys or homework with my daughter, painting furniture for a client, or working out to have some energy and girl time. The extras on my list may not get done that day. I have to be ok with that. The to-dos from today may just be moved to tomorrow as the day progresses and that’s OK! Gasp!

THAT is how I juggle it all. I fail a lot, and most days I’m lucky to feel like I’ve given any one of my jobs, including Mom, over 50% of my best. That’s the toughest part— cutting myself some slack. I posted a quote on my Facebook page recently that said “Behind every great kid is a mom who is pretty sure she is screwing it up.” Isn’t that the truth? I feel like a screw up most days, but the reality is, I’m a rock star! I’m Wonder Woman! I hold down a full-time corporate

job, I run my own furniture business out of my home, I do social media content for two companies daily and I run my kids around and raise them virtually on my own 60% of the time while my husband travels for work. I’m a rock star version of Wonder Woman and SO. ARE. YOU!!!

And… my kids can STILL ace that stupid STAAR test. How ‘bout them apples?

But there are some mamas out there going above and beyond, making selfless and inspiring contributions to their communities, friends and families. FRUIT KABOBS

YOU’LL NEED:1 medium, ripe watermelon

Fresh summer fruits, including cantaloup, Honeydew melon, pineapple, and whole strawberries

Kabob sticks

DIRECTIONS:1. Cut out the top of the watermelon.

Then scoop out the contents of the watermelon with a large spoon. Empty the watermelon of fruit

2. Cut the watermelon fruit into chunks.

3. Cut the melons and pineapple into

bite-sized chunks.

4. Cut the tops off of the strawberries.

5. Place fruit on kabob sticks. Arrange kabobs in watermelon bowl.
