I feel lIke I need to re-issue a “welcome to summer”. I don’t know about you, but May and June have felt like more of an extended spring than anything. The skies keep falling and it seems we’ve had less sun-shine to date. We do, however, have some lush green landscapes all around us that’s shaping our community to be quite beauti-ful deeper into the summer than expected. So, let the summer fun begin – officially!

There’s no shortage of things for the kids to do around town. From the good old-fashioned playing outside, to swimming and hanging out with grandma and granddad. Old Town is once again hosting the Summer Concert Series for the whole community and it doesn’t disappoint. We’re off to see Le Freak as this is going to print. Love them!

So far, we’ve managed to dye the girls hair crazy colors and make some pretty sweet tie-dye swim cover-ups. Both very messy, but a lot of fun to do. Think twice before doing the hair thing. We’ve chosen special rocks and painted fun sayings on them and my oldest is off to the first of several camps. This is the summer of chores at the Griffin household. They’ve always had them, but we’re cracking down this year. There is financial incentive, but also greater expectation. It’s been a bit of a “chore” itself just getting them into a routine but I say it’s going ok – just ok. Speaking of Old Town, the construction is over! Just in time for July 4th, a new restaurant called Wild About Harry’s is opening up on the corner next door to Fresco’s. Both are very solid reasons to get down there is you haven’t been in a while.

As always, this edition is packed with savings and info on all of the going’s-on in town. Read carefully, my friends, and save away! We have a featured article on the sacrifices the families of our military make that we sometimes don’t think about that I know you’ll enjoy. We’ve also added a few fun facts about Independence Day that you might find interesting. Ok, I’m off to the pool, kids. After all, it’s of-ficially summer (again) and outside is where you should be, too! See ya on the streets!

SACRIFICE

SPC. JOSEPH FERRAMOSCAand family

Local Life | JULY 2015 5

Hard to top for sure. Our men and women of the Armed Forces take the cake when it comes to paying the ultimate sacrifice for each of us. We don’t really talk about it enough, in my opinion, but we do at least talk about it. What we don’t talk about is the enormous sacrifice the families of these soldiers, airmen, and marines make. The husbands and wives who stay behind to run the business of family on their own is a tremendous load and burden. There are children who suddenly don’t have a mother or father for extended periods of times. There are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts that experience a constant state of worry while their loved one is deployed. They do all of this because they love. They were not the ones to volunteer. They did not necessarily sign up for this. They do, however, support the decisions of their loved one as best they can because that’s just what you do.

As we celebrate Independence Day this year I certainly want you to stop and remember all of those serving our country past and present. I’d also like you to think about those individuals that serve our country by holding a family together in the absence of a warrior off to work. Some of you know a soldier. You miss them and think about them from time to time. It really hits home when there’s an update on the news about some skirmish overseas. With time,

we eventually get back to our normal day in and day out of American freedom. This is perfectly ok. It is. This is what a soldier expects you to do. For some people, though, there is no normal to get back to. They live with the “deployment” 24/7. Sure, they put on a good face and act like they’ve got it together because they’re tough as nails. They have to be. But, it is hard. Excruciating, sometimes.

As a nation, we should be better about considering the daily battles the families of our military go through. As a community, I think we can do better than “should”. So, what to do? Good question. Not knowing the answer to that question is a major reason why more people don’t do something a little more often to help out these families. Here’s a short list of some things you can do that can literally change someone’s world this year.

THEY SAY THE GREATEST SACRIFICE IS TO GIVE YOUR LIFE FOR THAT OF ANOTHER.

SACRIFICESGT GEOFFREY CANTRELLTexas Army National Guard

Page 8: Local Life Magazine, July 2015

DON’T ASK, “HOW ARE YOU DOING?”Just make an effort to say “Hi” and a hug is always pretty great, too. Her loved one is gone, how do you think she’s doing? Better yet, tell them you’re praying for their family and then actually go pray.

YARD WORK Yes, they can manage on their own, but pitching in from time to time frees up an already busy schedule to knock something else out on the to do list. Again, careful not to ask if there’s “anything you can do,” but just call ahead and say I’m coming over to mow – be there in 30.

BABYSITThis is a big one. The best I’ve heard is telling them that you’re free all week and would like to hang with little Johnny. When can I get him? This actually works double-duty. Mom/dad gets a break and Johnny gets to do something fun and different. If it’s dad that’s deployed, do some stuff with Johnny that his dad might have done with him.

INVITE THEM OVERSometimes a little interaction can take their minds off of the everyday stresses in their world. Don’t be weird. Just hang out. Game night of Taco Tuesday is always a good excuse. Remember, when you’re spending quality family time on the weekends is probably the hardest on her because she’d like to be doing the same thing.

REALLY INVITE THEM OVER ON HOLIDAYSI don’t think this one needs explaining. However, remembering birthdays and anniversaries makes you extra awesome here.

BRING A MEALYou can do this randomly or set a day of the week that is your day to cook for them. Don’t cook? Buy. It’s such a little investment that will go a long way.

GROCERY LISTYou’re at the market anyways. Call and see if there’s anything she needs why you’re there. She can pay you back later and would gladly do so to save the trip.

CHURCHInvite the family to go with you. If they already attend somewhere else, think about going with them. Make sure they have a support group of believers that are praying and available to help in times of need.

LISTENThis is really the biggest one. They go through frustrations that we don’t know about. Be careful not make generic statements that have no intention behind them. Be a real shoulder to cry on or sounding board to talk to. Let them unload some of that burden or share the joys of the latest piece of good news. This only works if you care. If you genuinely do then this is the best gift you can give and costs nothing.

This is a list that could go on and on but the above are some pretty good staples to start with. I was a soldier and never really deployed for any long or extended period. The thing is, gone is gone, to family. Whether it’s 2 months or 2 years, it’s scary. It gets really lonely. No one naturally wants to burden others with their business, so most of us probably would never know of the struggles that exist. Even the strongest of the strong will benefit from any one of the above offerings. So, yes, please remember our military this 4th of July. But also, please, please don’t forget about their families who stayed behind and are making that great sacrifice right along with their soldier. It means the world to them to know someone else is aware of what they’re going through. You’ve got the time, I promise. You’ll be glad you did and you just may learn something along the journey. Consider it your own little sacrifice – your way to do your part to pay for this wonderful nation we call America. Happy 4th, everyone!

Did You Know?Fun

Facts4thThree former U.S. presidents: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, two founders of

the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4, 1826. James Monroe died on the 4th in 1831.

Americans began celebrating the 4th as Independence Day in 1777, but Congress didn’t make it an official holiday until 1870.

Calvin Coolidge, the nation’s 30th President was born on Independence Day, as was Malia Obama, daughter of Barack.

More than 155 million hot dogs will be consumed in America this 4th of July

In July of 1776, America had a population of 2.5 million people. The latest 2015 census has our population at over 325 million!

To avoid further cracking, the Liberty Bell has not been rung since 1846. Instead, today it is symbolically tapped 13 times to mark the special occasion.

The APA estimates that more than 14,000 professional fireworks displays will light up the skies this coming 4th of July.

97% of imported fireworks are made in China. 87% of imported U.S. flags are also made in China.

In 1954, the words, “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance.

The oldest, continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States is the 4th of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island; it began in 1785.

AMERICAN

ROUGH CREEK STEAKHOUSEIf you’re looking for a mouth-watering steak with all the fixins, take a short drive to Rough Creek Steakhouse in Joshua. This cute and rustic style restaurant has everything from steak, chicken, fish and even salads. The yummy sweet cornbread melts in your mouth. Family-owned and operated. 3509 SW Wilshire Blvd., Joshua 817-295-5352 $$ L D

ROSCOE’S SMOKEHOUSESlow and low. That’s how they get down with their fork-tender, fall off the bone meat. With a simple philosophy and a secret rub, this is real Texas barbecue cooked to perfection. Add some fresh sides and a 29-degree schooner and you’ve got “well-rounded” covered. Two words: Banana Pudding. I’m done. 1541 SW Wilshire Burleson (817) 484-2123 $$ L D

DALTON’S CORNERIf you were a Burleson teen from the 80’s, this name is sure to ring a few bells. What you may remember as a teen nightclub is now one building over and a nostalgic bar and grill, chock-full of menu items with throwback names. Check out the great burgers, steaks, chicken and more or try the Barnett Shale Pasta with a mix of cheeses and just a little kick. After dinner, make a night of it at the bar or shoot a few games of pool. For larger groups, a party room is available. Go check ‘em out today! 200 S. Main St. Old Town Burleson (817) 295-5456 $$ L D

MOOYAHDeliver the best burger & fry experience EVER and have fun doing it! That’s the Mooyah mission. Not only is the food great (I like the turkey burger) the atmosphere is just as cool. Grab a pen and take your own order. Then doodle on the walls until it arrives. Unique twists on the American burger and yummy shakes are sure to leave you more than satisfied – we promise! 12632 South Freeway Suite #101, Burleson 817-295-1577 $ L D ®

SMASH BURGERFresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef…. Ok, so they make good burgers. But let’s talk handspun classic shakes served in a frosted glass for a sec. So good! Back to the food. Smashed-to-order burgers are for the true burger fan. Artisan buns, freshly chopped produce, and flavorful sauces dress a juicy burger you’ll enjoy down to the last bite. This is a burger with a soul. They also do chicken pretty darn well, and lay down some of the freshest salads in town. 1505 Wilshire Burleson $$ L D

THE OLD TEXAS BREWING CO. Yes, we have a brewery! Located in Old Town, The Old Texas Brewing Company serves Burleson’s largest selection of beer and their Frost Rail Bar keeps it ice cold. Looking for something different? Fridays and Saturdays, dine on the Rooftop Patio and enjoy live music. Try one of the mouthwatering burgers, a juicy Angus Ribeye or enjoy some great BBQ with an ice cold beer. It’s a great way to end the day or week. 112 West Ellison. Burleson (817) 447–BEER (2337) $$ L D ® Brunch on Saturday and Sunday

THE PORCHThe Porch just got a makeover. The small-town atmosphere makes for a great experience. An extended deck situated under a large, shady oak tree provides a restful setting to enjoy your old favorites like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, or grilled pork shops. Personally, I love taking the fam’ for breakfast. There’s just something about a good, home-cooked breakfast to start your day right. Whatever you decide, don’t forget about the pies. Yumm-O! 140 South Wilson Street, Burleson (817) 426-9900 $ B L D
