Freedom. This word means so much to so many. It’s what all Americans celebrate this month. It means that we are all fortunate enough to live in a country that allows us to choose who we want to be. It means that even though there exists a long list of things we’d like to change, we are granted those liberties of choice to take the steps necessary to affect such changes. I certainly may not agree with everything our city, our state, or our Federal government does, but I cannot deny that I am

extremely lucky to live in the great nation of America. I am not proud of all Americans. But I am overly proud to be AN AMERICAN. I am also very proud of our heroes in the Armed Forces that wake up every morn-ing, and have for all of our years, to defend that freedom. I am married to a veteran and we say thank you to all veterans past and present.

Freedom also means that I can unplug from time to time. As I’m writing this I’m getting the family ready to head off to the Big Apple for a week of R&R. You might notice this edition is coming to your mailbox a little early. This is for two reasons. First, it means I can truly unplug. Take a vacation without the worries of work. Second, we made a big error in last month’s edition with the Summer calendar and I can run this month a little early with the corrected version. We want to extend our deepest apologies for any scheduling headaches we may have caused. Trust me, we were devastated when we saw it. Local Life prides itself on professional-ism and accuracy and you have my personal word that I will work even harder trying to catch any misprints going forward.

For the kiddos, summer means freedom from school and my kids are defi-nitely taking advantage. One summer camp down for my two and one yet to come. Those little weeklong stints mean a little freedom for mama, too. Last month I was able to slip away to L.A. to visit my half-sister during camp week. We topped it off with everyone returning to enjoy a wonder-ful Father’s Day weekend with my best friend and husband of 12 years. We are some lucky girls, I tell ya! I hope that this summer has brought you some much needed family time and even much more deserved “free-doms”. This month’s magazine is a good one. It’s full of great ideas and savings. But, I’m not going to ask for your business this time around. Rather, I only ask that each of you go out of your way at least once this month to thank a hero that protects, or has protected, our wonderful FREEDOM. It only takes a second, and you only have to say two words: “Thank you.” It’s simple and means so much. Happy 4th to everyone, and from all of us here at Local Life, thank you so much to all veterans past and present that have given us the wonderful nation and life that we are free to enjoy every day.

Thank A Vet!

Local Life | JULY 2014 5

CHANCES ARE YOU PROBABLY KNOW SOMEONE

WHO HAS SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES.

YOU MIGHT EVEN BE RELATED TO A FORMER

SOLDIER, AIRMAN, SAILOR, OR MARINE. MAYBE

YOU’VE THANKED THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE,

MAYBE YOU HAVEN’T. YOU SHOULD.

Furthermore, it’s not really about what they actually did or didn’t do while serving their “volunteered” tour. It’s about what they were willing to do. When you think about the weight of willingness a veteran has laid on the line to secure our freedoms, a “thank you” just seems so necessary.

Let me be clear. I am a veteran. I have never met one vet who walks around with even the slightest glimmer of expectation of receiving

thanks. That’s not why this man or woman enlisted. It isn’t. For each of us it’s different. For most, it’s even unexplainable. I enlisted because I felt I was supposed to. No one asked me to or told me to. I just sort of had a belief that it was my place to do so. Often we know a veteran that did the boot camp thing, trained in a military job, served their time and got out. Or, maybe you know someone who served or currently serves in a reserve type of operation.

Page 8: Local Life Magazine, July 2014

They’re not in any real danger. They haven’t put their life on the line, right? Wrong. The moment they place their hand on the bible and take that oath (at least, that’s what I had to do…) they have agreed to fight and die for you. That’s worth a little gratitude.

Our great Nation is actually really good at recognizing this sacrifice that our Armed Forces members make. I travel a lot for a living and see wonderful acts of gratitude on regular occasion at airports or on planes when it comes to our service men and women. It never gets old. It’s cool, even. I was reading a story the other day about a German soldier and American soldier meeting at the recent 70-year reunion of the Normandy Invasion. (D-Day: 06 June 1944) The former Nazi soldier said he was quite nervous prior to the meeting. He had carried this assumption for 70 years that the entire outside world absolutely hated him. The American vet eased his fears when he said, “War was not your decision or choice. It was the choice of our governments. You are my brother for

sharing in the most difficult thing in our lives.” It’s these little stories you hear that warm your heart on a topic that is so ugly.

It’s men and women with these stories that really deserve our thanks and more. We have modern day heroes serving in the Middle East that have similar stories. What most of us may not realize is that these stories won’t be around forever. Last month’s 70-year anniversary of the “storming of Utah and Omaha beaches” really made me think. More men, supplies, and vehicles deployed for this excursion than any other deployment in history and there are only a handful of them left to deliver firsthand accounts. To hear the words, “I’ll never forget the flash of fear I felt when I jumped out of a plane at 1:30 AM on June 6, 1944 over Normandy, France,” come from the mouth of 101st Airborne paratrooper, John Cipolla, just weighs so heavy. The C47 he had just jumped from exploded in the air seconds later. “The sky looked like the 4th of July. I just watched in awe as aircraft tumbled to the ground and exploded on contact. And,

Page 9: Local Life Magazine, July 2014

Local Life | JULY 2014 7

that’s where I was headed – down there!” D-Day was a well-kept secret. When an actual date hasn’t been set for an operation the letter “D” is inserted to mark the calendar. Nazi Germany was on a mission to dominate all of Europe and the Allied Forces were determined to stop it. Hitler had a good idea they were coming, he just didn’t know when. Originally planned for June 5, the assault occurred a day later surprising even the first veterans on the ground. “We didn’t know what our mission was. We didn’t know if it would work. What if the attack on the beach fails?” Cipolla recalls.

Often we get caught up in our own emergencies. We take for granted the “life or death” scenarios we face here at home that really have no impact on life or death. I am in no way discounting your trials and tribulations. That would be wrong on many levels. I am merely highlighting the value of these men and women that so often gets dismissed or overlooked because we don’t truly understand the measure of what they’ve experienced. You’ll find that younger vets may not necessarily be compelled to share actual stories. That’s OK. Some, young or old, may have stories that are just too trying

to recall. Let it lie. But, never be afraid to ask. Don’t hesitate to extend a hand of gratitude and keep it to a simple, “Thank You.” Many veterans need the therapeutic relief of talking through it with someone. Some have outlived their brothers and sisters in arms, and even their families. A younger generation taking an interest in the most impactful time in their lives can be fulfilling, and even rejuvenating.

This 4th of July as we’re sitting around the fire, celebrating our Independence, I ask that you remember those and their stories that have afforded us such freedoms. Don’t stop on the 5th, though. If you have a grandfather, brother, dad, sister, mom, or friend that has served in any capacity, let them know how appreciative of their sacrifice you are. Ask a few questions about what it was like “over there”. Then listen. Full-attention, just listen. You might just be floored at some of the circumstances that these heroes faced on an everyday basis. When they’re done talking, or if they don’t say much at all, don’t miss the opportunity to extend a hand or hug a neck and say, “Thank You.” It’s because of them you have what you have today. I, for one, am extremely grateful. Happy Independence Day!

receive is the satisfaction of serving such a wonderful community.

Doctors on the medical staff practice independently and are not employees or agents of the hospital. © 2014

If there were an award for receiving awards, we’d win that too.
