GreetinGs from the smoldering-hot middle of summer! While it’s definitely a scorcher out, me and mine have been taking full ad-vantage of the sunshine this year. Our family loves the outdoors and this has been a summer for the record books for us. I am a bit wor-ried my girls are going to grow scales and fins by the amount of time they spend in the pool. Between water sports, cookouts, and hours of yard work, we are certainly not missing out on the beautiful days this summer has brought us.

As I’m writing this, I’m very excited to report that my long-lost, half-sister and I will finally get the chance to meet face to face this coming week. I’m flying to L.A. to spend the week with her and we are both overcome with excitement. For me, it’ll certainly be a bit of therapy for the crazy year I’ve had. It’s a great feeling knowing there’s someone out there who shares your blood, looks like you, and can relate on levels that only family can. I’ve spent my entire life thinking I was an only child and only grandchild, so to say I’m excited is an understatement. Crossing my fingers all goes well!

This summer has also been a great reminder to me about what it is that we’re put on Earth to do. So often, so many of us spend the majority of our days battling the constant grind of the 8 to 5 that we forget to stop and “smell the roses”. At Local Life, we pride ourselves in being a family com-pany and consider those that work for and with us part of that extended family. Work is certainly healthy and important but it should never take priority over the people and relationships in our lives. This is where the primary investment of time should be – in each other. So, slow down and don’t forget to drink it all in. Keep your priorities in line and cherish every minute you get with friends and family. I know I will.

July is full of events and great savings through Local Life. Don’t forget to go to our website and sign up to receive Local Life’s Weekly Deals. The savings are even greater in some cases than what we print in the magazine. You don’t want to miss it. Now, go put on that sunscreen and get outside. It’s hot, but it sure is a beautiful day! See you out there…

Some genius posed this question some time ago, as if it were really a question at all! Unfor-tunately, many of us often feel like we come up on the wrong side of this scenario when we land at an answer. Raise your hand if you agree. (Ok, put your hand down, people are looking!) As I find myself in the middle of an activity-filled summer without enough time to spend on each, I realize that I need to have a plan. I’ve always driven forward with good intentions on prioritizing my life, but sometimes I lose track – lose focus. If you’re like me, we could all stand a little readjustment when it comes to shifting our time investment back towards the people and activities that will bear the most fruit where it really matters.

Early in my business career as I was making a push up the old corporate ladder I came across a leader in my organization from India. He had moved here in his teens and was American by most accounts. The one thing he learned as a lad from his home country was an undeniable work ethic. Whatever the task, large or small, he wouldn’t stop until it was achieved. I was in the early stages of an 18 month leadership course and he was one of the mentors. He was good – almost scary. The sheer number of hours he spent on the job made me rethink my chosen profession on numerous occasions. However, the level of success he had achieved and the overwhelming respect from his peers was some-thing I desperately wanted for myself and my family. Conundrum? Not for long. Soon after our impressive introduction, he suffered from a major heart attack – the triple bypass kind! It was scary. He was hospitalized and pulled from work for at least 6 months. I stayed in touch as I could and will never forget the day he returned and stood in front of our class. At this point I was well on my way to accomplishing what I set out to do. I was at the top of the group. I was now teaching part of the curriculum and there were few awards that didn’t come my way. Then he addressed the room and my whole plan went out the window.

“I’m an idiot,” he said. I’m paraphrasing here, but certainly he could’ve chosen a better open-er. He continued, “For a man as well-studied as I am, with many accolades, I have finally come to the conclusion that I have had it all wrong.” Then he said it, “Why are we all here? Do we not want more for our families? Is this not the reason you all have accepted the challenge of this grueling program? Is the money and status simply a means to provide our families with a life that you never had? Where are our priori-ties? Are we living to work or are we working so that we may live life to the fullest?”

Shaquille had come very close to his last breath. It took a serious wake-up call for a man like this to change course and re-evaluate. The remark-able thing is he went on to teach us how to ac-complish everything we set out to do in a day, but in a much shorter and more diligent way. You don’t have to give up your dreams or sac-rifice success. You just need a plan and it has to be thoughtful and intentional. We weren’t necessarily close but that’s an experience that had a tremendous effect on my life. My hope is that it doesn’t take a tragedy for each of us to realize where the bulk of our time should be focused. Sometimes, all you really need to do is just stop and take a breath. Take that hard-to-find 30 minutes and look at where you’re invest-ing your hours. Here are a few tips that I hope will add some clarity, and fulfillment back into your daily routine:

1 Put It On The Schedule: At work everything goes into your calendar. Otherwise, nothing would get done. We get those fancy little reminders on our phones or laptops and we get it done. Be intentional about doing this for your family time, as well. Soccer games, date night, birthday parties, or even chill time are worth plugging into Mr. Out-look. It only takes a few seconds.

Page 9: Local Life Magazine, July 2013

w w w . L o c a l L i f e T X . c o m J U L Y 2 0 1 3 7

2. At Home, Be At Home: Put the phone down, buddy! If you always answer your phone (voice or email) then you are setting an expectation that it’s ok to call at any time or day of the week. Another great lesson learned - it can wait until tomorrow. There really are very few emergencies in any profession that require your immedi-ate response. (OK, first responders please disregard this tip. I still want you to an-swer if my house is on fire!)

3 Cut The Fat: By fat, I mean those people and activities that add no value to your career or personal lives. Be hon-est, how much time do you spend listening to gossip, checking Facebook, or absorb-ing someone else’s negativity? Minimize this now. I’m not saying to ignore those in-need, just know the difference between a cry for help and venting for the sake of venting. You’d be surprised at how much time you could free up.

4 Spend To Save: Consider outsourc-ing those weekly activities that suck large chunks of time from your world. Yard work can be therapeutic but teenage Jimmy down the street might be will-ing to do it pretty cheap and save you a couple of hours on the weekend. Does your dry cleaner deliver? Pay bills, order food, and shop online. The internet is a convenience that should be embraced, not feared. Even if you’re on a tight bud-get, the time you save just might be well worth the investment.

5 Sweat: You knew I couldn’t go with-out mentioning exercise! It’s science. By carving time out for regular exercise, you’ll simply have more energy to tackle everything you do with greater vigor. Your productivity improves and you just feel better. It does wonders for your self-

esteem, as well. Trust me, start sweating more!

While every field is different, every one of us can agree that we’d rather be spending time with those we love, doing what we love. My friend (a less than stellar golfer) always says a bad day on the golf course beats a good day at work anytime. I tend to agree. When it comes to the question in title above, there re-ally is no question. We work because we have to. We live because we get to. There is a differ-ence. Make the conscious effort to start shifting your boundaries toward the side that bears real fruit. My grandfather used to tell me to invest in those people that will cry at your funeral. It’s a little weird but makes a ton of sense. Those are the relationships worth your precious time. To steal from the most popular tag in the Twitter-verse, we only get one of these things called LIFE and we each deserve to make the most of it - #YOLO! (you only live once)

AMERICAN

AMBUSH Grill And BArFormer bass player for Country Thunder (70’s country-rock band), Ferocious Thunder (aka Ricky Hughes) discovered he had a knack for chili. The Ferocious Ambush Chili Team found themselves in Terlingua twice in the international chili cook-off. Bringing his recipes to Rendon and Crowley you can now enjoy a unique twist on the Southern American menu or cool down at the bar. Be sure to try the Mini Fried Pies for dessert – they’re a nice touch! 824 S. Crowley Rd. Crowley, TX (817) 551-9360 $-$$ L D

dAlton’S CornerIf you were a Burleson teen from the 80’s, this name is sure to ring a few bells. You may remember as a teen night club is now 1 building over and a nostalgic bar and grill, chock-full of menu items with throwback names. Check out the great burgers, steaks, chicken and more or try the Barnett Shale Pasta with a mix of cheeses and just a little kick. Ask your server about the great daily chef specials.
