“I have suffered from headaches and

kept me from attending my kids’ games,

2015! Can you believe it? Christmas came and fireworks popped as we all sang Auld Lang Syne arm-in-arm. But that was so 2014. Look ahead, my friends. We’ve got things to do! There are new days to uncover and blank slates to fill. For this, this is a new year. And I will make it memorable. Maybe, even remarkable!

There’s something about the turn of the year that just gets me fired up. If you’re like me, it’s warming to look back over the previous year and soak it in for a bit. All of it. The good, the bad, and the high’s and low’s. They all make up who you are, who you’ve become, or maybe even who you left behind. January is all about resolutions. It’s kind of funny because the word “resolution” really translates into an at-tempt to fix something. Sometimes I guess that may be true, but when it comes to yourself, or a personal habit, I’d rather not think of myself as broken. You shouldn’t either. Sure we all have our bad habits, but broken we are not. Change. I like that word. What would or could I do different to get the result I prefer?

If you look at it as changing this or that because you are in control of your life then you’ll have a far better perspective and outlook toward your goal. Routine and reward are key ingredients for building habits. If you’re building a new habit or routine, make sure you’re taking a minute to reward yourself for what you’re doing. Nothing major, just a small trigger that your brain begins to process as a reward every time you do the new routine.

For this girl, nothing earth shattering this year. It’s going to be a time and priority year for me. My biggest focus will be making sure I’m spending time with God everyday. Making Him a priority. It’s so easy to get caught up in the velocity of everyday life that we overlook the things that are most important to us. Simple and measurable. I like it. Thanks so much for another wonderful year at Local Life Magazine! We’re so proud of our community and just love our jobs. Maybe a bit cliché, but here’s to wish-ing that this is your best year, yet! Hello, 2015!

Keep Your New Year’s

RESOLUTIONMAKE 2015 THE YEAR YOU

by Lindsay Rose

4 www.LocalLifeTX.com

Ah, New Year’s! That time of year when we resolve to make that big change in our lives.

This is the year I lose 40 pounds. This is the year I bust my butt to get that promotion. This is

the year I bite my tongue and get along better with my in laws. And almost inevitably, this is

the year I break my New Year’s resolution. According to StatisticBrain.com, 45% of Americans

usually make a New Year’s resolution and only 8% achieve it. Also according to this source,

the younger you are, the more likely you are to achieve it. Adults in their 20s achieved their

resolution 39% of the time compared to only 14% of people in their 50s. During my research for

this article, I Googled various topics relating to New Year’s Resolutions to see what might bring

me some inspiration. I came across two very telling lists from two very big sources.

Most Popular NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Not surprisingly, they’re almost exactly the same. So, this year, how can you set yourself up to

achieve your New Year’s resolution? The cynic in me wants to say, “Don’t make one.” But not

only is that not helpful, that’s totally against my topic. Here are a few tips to make 2015 the year

you actually keep your New Year’s resolution:

1. MAKE ONE RESOLUTIONBe reasonable. You’re not likely to achieve

seven lofty goals this year, so set one goal

and make sure you’re excited about it. While

you know quitting smoking isn’t going to be

easy, it will be nice to have your family and

friends off your back about it and you know

you’re doing something good for yourself.

Also, be specific about your goal. It’s hard to

tell if you’ve achieved vague goals like, “Be

a better person.” If you’re having a hard to

time choosing a resolution, you’re probably

overthinking it. Typically, whatever comes

to you first is the resolution that’s most

important.

2. PLAN YOUR APPROACHIn the business world, we are told to set

SMART goals. That is, goals that are Specific,

Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and

Timely. While it may seem a bit overboard

to go through the whole process you use at

work to ensure your New Year’s resolution

is SMART, all of these items are worth

considering if you really want to achieve your

goal. Another key statistic from StatisticBrain.

com says that people who explicitly make

resolutions are TEN times more likely to keep

them than people who don’t explicitly make

resolutions.

3. SHARE YOUR RESOLUTIONPost a note of the refrigerator, write it on your

mirror, share it on Facebook. Do whatever you

need to do to keep your eyes on the prize and

hold yourself accountable. Having a New

Year’s resolution buddy is a great way to stay

honest about your goal…as long as you can

handle your buddy asking how your weight

loss is going as you’re scarfing down a slice

of Snicker’s cheesecake.

4. PICK A START DATEContrary to popular belief, your New Year’s

resolution does not need to begin on January

1. It’s still a busy time of year and you may

have better success if you put it off a bit. For

me, nothing real happens until the kids are

back in school and we’ve settled back in to

our routine. For others,

beginning a new

diet two weeks

before a vacation

also might not be

the best timing. In

addition to picking

a start date, pick

c h e c k - i n

dates as

well. Set

Page 8: Local Life Magazine, January 2015

6 www.LocalLifeTX.com

reminders for yourself at one week, one

month, six months or whatever is appropriate.

5. DON’T BE DISCOURAGEDDon’t be discouraged by setbacks . Anticipate

problems and how you can avoid them or get

past them. There’s a good chance you’ll get

off course some time during the year, but

that’s no reason to give up on your resolution.

One unhealthy meal is no reason to go off

your diet for the whole day or week, just as

one cigarette in a moment of weakness is no

reason to follow it up with six more. Find ways

to encourage yourself when you’re having

trouble or call a friend for support.

6. REWARD YOURSELFDon’t just focus on a big reward for achieving

your end goal, reward yourself for staying

on track. As you reach those check-in dates

you set for yourself, reward your success!

Whether it’s buying a new pair of jeans for

the first fifteen pounds lost or rewarding

yourself with that new-fangled fitness device

you didn’t know everyone has these days,

rewards keep you going.

The time has come to choose your New

Year’s resolution. Is 2015 the year you really

do make that big change in your life? Or

maybe 2015 is just the year you actually keep

your New Year’s resolution. Either way, now

you’re prepared to make it happen. And, in the

spirit of following my own advice, I’m going to

share my New Year’s resolution with you…in

2015 I want to earn more money. Considering

I’m a stay-at-home mom who picks up

freelance writing jobs in her spare time, this

shouldn’t be too hard to achieve; however,

having a toddler at home who seems to need

a snack every time I turn around can be hard

on productivity. See? I’ve already anticipated

a problem, but I know I have great support at

home to help me through the tough times.

Good luck on your resolutions!

HEALTHY CHICKEN WITH A SPLASH OF LIME SOUP

FIRECRACKER SHRIMP TACOS WITH AVOCADO CORN SALSA

YOU’LL NEED:2 Tbsp olive oil

1 medium yellow onion

2 stalks celery

1 medium jalapeno

4 cloves garlic

¾ lb. chicken breast6

6 cups chicken broth*

1 (14.5 oz.) can diced tomatoes w/chiles

1 tsp oregano

½ Tbsp cumin

1 medium lime

½ bunch cilantro

1 medium avocado

YOU’LL NEED:1 pound large shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails removed

1 tablespoon chili lime Cholula Chili Lime or Original hot sauce

4 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons sugar

4 cloves garlic, minced

AVOCADO CORN SALSA:1-2 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 cup diced onion

1 cup frozen corn

1 can diced tomatoes with green chilies, drained

1 small avocado, diced

1 tablespoon lime juice

salt and pepper to taste (about 1/2 teaspoon each)

DIRECTIONS:Dice the onion, celery, and jalapeno (scrape the seeds out of the jalapeno before dicing). Mince the garlic. Cook the onion, celery, jalapeno, and garlic in olive oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until tender.

Add the chicken breast, chicken broth, canned tomatoes with chiles, oregano, and cumin to the pot. Bring the whole pot up to a boil over high heat then reduce the heat to low, place a lid on top, and let simmer for one hour.

After simmering for an hour with a lid on, carefully remove the chicken breast from the pot and use two forks to shred the meat. Return the meat to the pot. Squeeze the juice of one lime into the soup. Get as much juice as possible from the lime by using a spoon to scrape the inside of the lime.

Rinse the cilantro and then roughly chop the leaves. Add to the pot, give it a quick stir, and serve. Dice the avocado and add a few chunks to each bowl.

DIRECTIONS:Combine the hot sauce, olive oil, salt, sugar, and garlic and pour over shrimp. Stir to coat well. Place in Ziploc bag and marinate in fridge.

Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and corn, and saute, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes until onion is golden. Add drained tomatoes and stir for 1-2 more minutes until heated through. Remove to a bowl. Cut the avocado in half, scoop out the flesh with a spoon, dice, and add to corn mixture. Add the lime juice, plenty of fresh salt and pepper to taste, and stir gently to combine. Set aside.

Heat the pan again over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and marinade. Cook for 2 to 2.5 minutes per side until shrimp is golden and crispy. Add the shrimp to a tortilla, top with salsa, and serve.

Makes 4 tacos.

AMERICAN

ROSCOE’S SMOKEHOUSESlow and low. That’s how they get down with their fork-tender, fall off the bone meat. With a simple philosophy and a secret rub, this is real Texas barbecue cooked to perfection. Add some fresh sides and a 29-degree schooner and you’ve got “well-rounded” covered. Two words: Banana Pudding. I’m done. 1541 SW Wilshire Burleson (817) 484-2123 $$ L D

DALTON’S CORNERIf you were a Burleson teen from the 80’s, this name is sure to ring a few bells. What you may remember as a teen nightclub is now one building over and a nostalgic bar and grill, chock-full of menu items with throwback names. Check out the great burgers, steaks, chicken and more or try the Barnett Shale Pasta with a mix of cheeses and just a little kick. After dinner, make a night of it at the bar or shoot a few games of pool. For larger groups, a party room is available. Go check ‘em out today! 200 S. Main St. Old Town Burleson (817) 295-5456 $$ L D

MOOYAHDeliver the best burger & fry experience EVER and have fun doing it! That’s the Mooyah mission. Not only is the food great (I like the turkey burger) the atmosphere is just as cool. Grab a pen and take your own order. Then doodle on the walls until it arrives. Unique twists on the American burger and yummy shakes are sure to leave you more than satisfied – we promise! 12632 South Freeway Suite #101, Burleson 817-295-1577 $ L D ®

SMASH BURGERFresh, never frozen 100% Certified Angus Beef… Ok, so they make good burgers. But let’s talk handspun classic shakes served in a frosted glass for a sec. So good! Back to the food. Smashed-to-order burgers are for the true burger fan. Artisan buns, freshly chopped produce, and flavorful sauces dress a juicy burger you’ll enjoy down to the last bite. This is a burger with a soul. They also do chicken pretty darn well, and lay down some of the freshest salads in town. 1505 Wilshire Burleson $$ L D

THE OLD TEXAS BREWING CO. Yes, we have a brewery! Located in Old Town, The Old Texas Brewing Company serves Burleson’s largest selection of beer and their Frost Rail Bar keeps it ice cold. Looking for something different? Fridays and Saturdays, dine on the Rooftop Patio and enjoy live music. Try one of the mouthwatering burgers, a juicy Angus Ribeye or enjoy some great BBQ with an ice cold beer. It’s a great way to end the day or week. 112 West Ellison. Burleson (817) 447–BEER (2337) $$ L D ® Brunch on Saturday and Sunday

THE PORCHThe Porch just got a makeover. The small-town atmosphere makes for a great experience. An extended deck situated under a large, shady oak tree provides a restful setting to enjoy your old favorites like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, or grilled pork shops. Personally, I love taking the fam’ for breakfast. There’s just something about a good, home-cooked breaskfast to start your day right. Whatever you decide, don’t forget about the pies. Yumm-O! 140 South Wilson Street, Burleson (817) 426-9900 $ B L D

SPICE RACK TAPAS BAR & GRILLFrom a great staff and environment to the patio and live music, “The Rack” is soon becoming a fan favorite in Old Town. Organic produce and LOCAL from Walnut Creek Farm (we like that part!) fills out a menu that is simple but delectable. Start with the Wedge salad and move on to the Venison Tacos, or just cozy up to the bar with some stuffed jalapeno’s or sliders and a cold beverage. 133 S. Wilson St. Burleson (817) 295-7221 $$ L D

DICKEY’S BARBECUE PITSauce. Perfecting recipes since 1941, this authentic Texas-style barbecue pit is certainly no stranger to the smoker. While the first restaurant started in Dallas, they got to Burleson as fast as they could. With a strong family background this franchise location fits right in to our community. All meats are prepped and cooked on site and you’ll love the crazy-good sides like jalapeno beans and

STONE SOUP CAFEIf you’re in the mood for soup, salad or a sandwich, Stone’s is the place to be. Their sandwiches are “to-die-for” and the soup is always delicious. Hit up the salad bar for dinner and welcome the surprise of a cookie-treat to tackle that sweet craving you’ve been having! Eating healthy is never easy and rarely fun but Stone Soup Cafe makes it possible to do both. You can get in and out in no time flat. 333 Southwest Wilshire Blvd., Burleson (817) 447-2989 $ L D

GRUMP’S BURGERSAhhh, Grump’s. It just doesn’t get much better. Voted “Best Burger” more than once, these guys know what they’re doing with a patty. If a burger, sandwich, salad or side is what you’re after, they’ve got a dish that’ll more than satisfy. Bacon in your grilled-cheese - who would’ve thunk it? Cold beer, ice cream shakes and a really cool upper-deck and patio right in the heart of Old Town, Grump’s is waiting for your family now. 108 S. Main Old Town Burleson (817) 447-8800 $ L D ®

BABE’SIf it ain’t broke don’t fix it, right? More than just a restaurant, Babe’s has been a long time attraction in Old Town. Always a line to get in the door, you’ll know why as soon as you walk in. Home cooked food with a simple, yet, perfect menu. Family style sides and main courses that’ll make you think you’re at Grandma’s house. You just feel at home. One of the hands-down best sit down family restaurants in Texas. Come on in and let one of the local waitresses serenade you to a classic song that takes you back in time. Trust me. Food just doesn’t get better. 120 S. Main St Old Town Burleson (817) 447-3400 $-SS L D

ELK’S DINERIf throw-back and just flat out good food is your craving today, then Elk’s Diner is right where you want to be. Appropriately named after the local team, this diner has your whole palate covered for

breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff is friendly for the whole family and the daily specials keep it fresh enough to eat there every day of the week. Like them on Facebook and you’ll get a heads up of what’s on the menu that day. 344 SW Wilshire Blvd Burleson (817) 295-7271 $ B L D
