Foreword

This guide aims at providing the FPL 2013 participants with additional information the organizers, and in particular the local organization committee members, thought it would be of general interest. While some of the references to places and establishments referred to here can be found elsewhere in popular guides or easily on the web using the popular search engines, this document tries to gather some of our recommendations in a handy booklet. It highlights some of the places we recommend to visit in Porto, some of the typical Portuguese food specialties, and the places where you can taste Portuguese food and wines, including the famous Port wine.

In a section named “Essential Portuguese”, we provide a summary of the sentences and words you may like to learn and use during your stay in Porto. Not being recognized or accredited experts, the content presented here is in no way an official translation guide.

Despite these ‘disclaimers’ we believe, and sincerely hope, that you find this guide useful and possibly even keep it for future visits to Porto and/or Portugal.

Conference Venue: Hotel HF Ipanema Park

The HF Ipanema Park Hotel is located at:

Rua De Serralves, 124, 4150-702 Porto, Portugal

The hotel is 1 km away from the Museum of Contemporary Art, and less than 10-minutes driving from the “Ribeira” UNESCO World Heritage site. The bus stops at the hotel have a good connection to all the city spots and the distance from the hotel to “Casa da Musica” Metro Station is 1.9 km.

Note that the hotel called Ipanema is another hotel.

Eating and Restaurants

Tipping: In Portugal waiters do not rely on them for their income as heavily as in other places. Still, and depending on the level of service it is common to leave a tip between 5-10%.

A “bread charge” is restaurant-dependent and usually only charged if the bread is touched. We recommend if you don’t want the bread/butter you politely ask the waiter to remove it.

Below are some of the local main dishes. Note that an exact description of the plate contents is not often possible. As you will notice the codfish is present in many dishes.

Francesinha

Sandwich made with bread, various meats and covered with melted cheese and a hot thick tomato and beer sauce served with French fries

Arroz de Cabidela (duck/chicken/rabbit)

Portuguese dish made with poultry or rabbit. The rice is cooked with meat and blood of the animal, imparting a greyish-brown color. Aka. “Blood Rice”.

Tripas à moda do Porto

Stew made with tripe, sausages and white beans.

Feijoada de Marisco

Assorted seafood stew served with beans and rice

Bacalhau com Natas

Oven-baked soufflé-like dish with codfish, potatoes and cream.

Arroz de Tamboril Monkfish rice in a soup-like dish.

Shredded codfish, onions and potatoes fried with scrambled eggs.

Stew with vegetables, such as cabbage, collard greens, carrots, potatoes, and turnips boiled with various sausages & meats.

Moscatel Sweet wine made of the “Moscatel” grape usually served before/after a meal.

There are many other places deserving to be visited in Porto! Many churches (“igrejas” in Portuguese): “Igreja dos Clérigos”, “Igreja de Santa Clara”, “Igreja do Carmo”, “Igreja das Carmelitas”, and “Igreja de São Francisco”. The “Palácio da Bolsa” (Stock Exchange Palace), the “Paços do Concelho” (City Hall), the Palácio do Freixo” (Freixo Palace), the “Cadeia da Relação / Centro Português de Fotografia”, the “Teatro Nacional São João” (National “São João” Theatre with visits on Saturdays at 12h), and the “Avenida dos Aliados” are other examples of places deserving to be visited.

Last but not the least, and a must, are the Port Wine cellars, “Caves de Vinho do Porto”, in “V. N. de Gaia”. The Port wine cellars are located on the south side of the Douro river (city of “Vila Nova de Gaia”).

Outside Porto and following the Douro river you will be astonished by the impressive Douro landscape (declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO).

Bus Lines The HF Ipanema Park hotel is served by three bus lines (no. 200, 207, and 504). The “Lordelo” bus stop, located within 50 m, is the nearest. Below are the routes of the three bus lines with indications of the bus stops near metro stations and interesting places to visit. These run until midnight. At night, from 1h to 5h, the 1M bus line connects the hotel to the center of the city.

Selected Porto Trips With good weather, it is always a good option to walk in the riverside area, both in the south side (“Vila Nova de Gaia”) and in the north side (“Ribeira”). Another option is to rent a bicycle and pedal from “Ribeira” to “Foz”.

Trip A

Travelling by metro (line D, destination “Santo Ovídio”) exit at the “Jardim do Morro” metro station. There you have a nice view of Porto from the other side of the Douro River.

From “Jardim do Morro” take the Gaia cable car1 (“Teleférico de Gaia”) down to the Gaia

riverside (the trip lasts about 5 minutes). Then, walk on the riverside. There you can taste Port wine in one of the Port wine cellars. You can return by traversing the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge and walk in “Ribeira” or by returning to the “Jardim do Morro” metro station taking the Gaia cable car up.

Trip B

[Trip lasting around 40 minutes walking from “Jardim do Morro” to “Ribeira”] From “Jardim do Morro” traverse the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge and turn left at the “Calçada de Vandoma” in the direction of the “Sé do Porto” (Porto’s cathedral). There you can go down to “Ribeira”. One of the interesting routes is through the stairs and narrow paths between houses. Another possibility it to take the ”Ascensor da Ribeira” elevator (also known as “Elevador da Lada”). The elevator is free and from its top you have a nice view of the Dom Luís I bridge and of “Ribeira.

Trip C

[Trip lasting around 30 minutes walking from “Ribeira” to “Rua de Santa Catarina”] Once at “Ribeira” you can walk up in the direction of the “São Bento” train station. On the way up from “Ribeira” in one corner on the right you can taste Port wines at Vinologia. Visit the “São Bento” train station and see the panels with tiles (“azulejos”) in the walls. Then continue up to the beginning of the “Santa Catarina” street (“Rua de Santa Catarina”). There you are in one of the most typical commercial streets. Visit the “Café Majestic” (on your right). In the same street, you can try a “Francesinha” at “Bufete Fase“ (no. 1147) or at “Santiago”, “Rua Passos Manuel” (“Passos Manuel” street) no. 226, a street crossing the “Rua da Santa Catarina”, near “Coliseu do Porto” (an auditorium).

Trip D

In the hotel bus stop take the 200 bus and go to the “Mercado do Bolhão” (“Bolhão” market), the most famous, century old, Porto market. On the way you can stop and try a “Francesinha” at the “Capa Negra II” restaurant (“Junta Massarelos” bus stop) or at the “Alicantina” restaurant (“Planetário” bus stop). Both restaurants are easily seen from the respective bus stops. If you like to try some Portuguese pastry and Éclairs you can enter at “Leitaria da Quinta do Paço” (“Guil. G. Fernandes” bus stop).
