Community Solutions

The Campus Kitchen strengthens bodies by using existing resources to meet nutritional needs in our community, empowers minds through student leadership and nutrition education, and builds community through reciprocal partnerships.  

Since November 2007, the Campus Kitchen has:  

• Recovered over 30,000 pounds of food from over 30 restaurants, businesses, and individuals in the Gettysburg Community. 

• Distributed over 18,000 nutritious meals to families in need. • Provided nutrition education to over 130 individuals. • Built countless friendships that break down barriers and create a 

stronger, more united community.

What Can You Do?  

Grow Food. Plant vegetables at home or join the Community Garden.  Buy Locally. Support the Adams County Farmers Markets, local farm stands, and Community Supported Agriculture. Ask your local stores to carry and promote local produce.   Get Healthy Food into Institutions.  Ask our local schools, hospitals, and other institutions to provide healthier food.   Support Food Assistance Programs. Help local soup kitchens and food pantries provide fruits and vegetables to families in need.  Improve Transit Routes. Ask your local government to increase access to healthy foods by improving transit routes.  Join the Adams County Food Policy Council and the Local Foods Network!

Everyone deserves a chance to make healthy food choices.   We tend to eat the food that is easy to get. When that is mostly low‐quality food, it’s bad for our health, which hurts families and communities through reduced quality of life, high health care costs, and lost work time.   Ensuring all people, regardless of income, have access to affordable  and nutritious food is essential.   Let’s work together to find community solutions to improve our food system!

  ADAMS COUNTY FOOD POLICY COUNCIL

In the interest of health and sustainability, the Adams County Food Policy Council promotes the integration of the individual, the community, the economy, and the environment.  We engage with businesses, institutions, social service agencies, community members, the agricultural sector, and government to develop food policy and take action by:  

Making fresh produce and nutritious foods accessible to low‐income families. Connecting farms with institutions to encourage the use of local foods. Educating our community and supporting a local, sustainable food system. 

 Recent collaborative projects include:  

• A completed community food assessment, ‘Closing the Food Gap in Adams County: A Proposal for Comprehensive Solutions through Community Action.’ 

• Investigated the effects of the 2009 Pennsylvania State Budget Impasse. • Compiled and distributed over 1600 copies of “Adams County's Food Pantries 

and Soup Kitchens" in English and Spanish. • Implemented an EBT/debit machine at Farmers Markets. 

• Hosted a Farm to Institution Workshop to bring food service directors, institutions, distributors and community members together to develop strategies for increased collaboration. 

• Provided education, awareness and information about local foods.  

• Produced and distributed this guide since 2008. 

• Implemented a Farmers Market Produce Voucher Program for families in the food gap.
