A Prosperous Town

Like everywhere else, the retail sector in Newbury andsurrounding areas has had some difficult times in recent years, but the opening of several new stores in the past few weeksshows that Newbury is bouncing back. It’s never been soimportant to “keep it local”, especially during the busy run-up toChristmas, and readers can help bring prosperity back to ourcommunity by doing as much of their shopping here as possible.

Keeping it local has so many advantages. The money you spenddirectly benefits people in the neighbourhood, helping to keepour friends, family and neighbours in work. It saves you timeand travel, and frees up so much more of your valuable time forwhat you want to do. Of course, keeping it local helps theenvironment too.

There’s something for everyone here. From the twice-weeklyCharter Market in the Market Place to our smaller independentretailers in the town and surrounding areas, and right through tothe larger superstores. The choice of goods and services is justas wide as anywhere else in the county – if you can’t findexactly what you want, just ask!

There are plenty of special events too – there really is somethingfor everyone! From pantomime to theatre, from live music tocinema, and sports clubs of every description, there’s just somuch that happens here every day of the week.

Newbury and its neighbours are for all year round, and not justfor Christmas. It’s at the centre of a beautiful part of southernEngland, and we can all make it our resolution to get out andenjoy the great countryside that’s right on our doorstep. That’smy two New Year Resolutions – keep my shopping local, and getout more to enjoy the great outdoors, and I might just startthem now instead of waiting until 2011!

From the colourful heather of latesummer to the icy chill of mid-winter,Greenham and Crookham Common is anexhilarating place to visit in allseasons. Once famous as a militaryairbase, it is now a popular spot forwalking, cycling, horse riding andexercising dogs.

The Common is also of enormous importancefor nature conservation: it forms the largestremaining fragment of lowland heathland inBerkshire and is home to some of Britain’smost vulnerable wildlife. The site is ownedby West Berkshire Council, and managed inpartnership with Berkshire, Buckinghamshireand Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) aspart of the Trust’s West Berkshire LivingLandscape initiative.

Why are heathlands so important?Lowland heath once covered largeareas of southern Britain. However, since the1700s more than four-fifths of this habitathas been lost (98% has been lost inBerkshire), causing severe decline in someof the wildlife that thrives here.

In recognition of this, and the high nationalimportance of rare heathland wildlife, lowland heath has been included by thegovernment on a list of the most importantUK habitats to protect and restore.

The Heathland and Beyond ProjectThis new three year project led by BBOWTwill restore and enhance key areas ofheathland, woodland and reedbeds withinthe West Berkshire Living Landscape area. The first phase of the project is taking place

during November at CrookhamCommon East, where theoriginal heathland hasbecome very overgrown withscrub and trees.

Restoring lostheathlandOn Crookham Common Eastformer areas of heathhave become overgrownwith trees, but viableseeds of heather stillremain in the soil. Ifthe trees and scrubare removed, these

seeds will germinate quickly, and within fiveyears heather should become establishedand other heathland plants and animalsstart to colonise.

BBOWT has assessed Crookham Common Eastand will remove about 70% of the treesfrom specific areas. Individual mature treesand small copses of birch and oak withinthese areas will be left to develop, providing important feeding and nestingareas for wildlife.

A landscape for all to enjoyIf you enjoy a long walk, you can follow asix-mile circular route that takes in theNature Discovery Centre in Thatcham, the

fantastic BBOWT nature reserve at BowdownWoods as well as Greenham Common. Pickup a leaflet at the Nature Discovery Centreor visit www.bbowt.or.uk and follow links to‘Biodiversity’ and ‘West Berkshire LivingLandscapes’ for details.

Would you like to help with theHeathland and Beyond project? There’s more information about the

‘Heathland and Beyond’project, and the West BerkshireLiving Landscape atwww.bbowt.org.uk - click on‘Biodiversity’ and then ‘LivingLandscapes’. Or come to anupdate evening for the project on10th November 7pm at the NatureDiscovery Centre in Thatcham.

For further details about the projectand various volunteeringopportunities available, contact

BBOWT West Berkshire Living LandscapeManager, Jacky Akam:[email protected], tel. 01635 500886.

The Heathland and Beyond project has beenmade possible by three significant grantsfrom Grantscape, SITA Trust and Biffaward(distributors of Landfill Communities Fundgrants), as well as a number of local grantsand donations.

Christmas comes but oncea year. . .along with theseasonal influenza. . .somake sure you and yourloved ones stayhealthy this winterand enjoy thefestive season.

1 Energy levels

Start by keeping yourenergy levels up but becautious of usingstimulants to maintainyour stamina over theholidays. Alcohol, coffee and sugar can leaveyour adrenal system exhausted. An herbalremedy from Siberia called Rhodiola Roseaactually supports the adrenal glands, working with the body to reduce stress andboost energy.

2 Boost your immune system

Prevention is far better than cure. To avoidinfections try Echinacea, Ester-C andOregon Grape to boost the immune system. This will help fight off the many infectionsaround this time of year at work and athome with family and children.

3 Protect your liver

Overindulgence in rich foods can put astrain on the liver. If you find that you’veoverdone the mince pies and brandy butter –and don’t we all – try Milk Thistle to aid theliver in recovery. Research indicates that thisherb offers protection from liver damage.

Finally, take time out to enjoy the moment!

Parkway reachesmajor

Construction of Parkway - the excitingnew shopping centre being developedby Standard Life Investments in theheart of Newbury - is flying along andone of the four tower cranes beingused has already been dismantled andremoved from site.

The removal of the crane marks a majormilestone in the construction programme, as the team can now press ahead with theremainder of works inside the buildingwhich will house the Debenhams store in readiness for the shop fit out next year (2011).

With the anchor tenants Debenhams, Marks &Spencer, H&M and - most recently - NewLook, and strong interest from other topretailers in the remaining units in the475,000 sq ft project, the new centre is setto be an exciting addition to Newbury whenit opens in October 2011.

Parkway will boast over 50 new shops, as well as restaurants and cafés. Thedevelopment will also provide a 734space underground car park as well as 184 new homes.

It's surely one of the busiest times of the year

from Halloween through to Bonfire Night,

followed by the hectic run-up to the Christmas

festivities. Then there's the cold weather to

cope with into January, which means making

the time to taking extra special care of yourself

to keep healthy and cheerful.

One answer is to find a good local beauty

salon. On our door step, is home to some

excellent health and beauty spas so there's no

excuse not to pop in for some pampering to

help you survive the winter season. Some

salons offer special sessions of pampering with

two or more therapists, so you get all the

treatments done in a small amount of time.

I asked Emma at the fabulous Laurabella Spa to

share her beauty secrets for the winter months.

"A top to toe in an hour can include a mini

facial, massage, eye brow tidy, eye lash tint,

waxing, manicure and pedicure. You can enjoy

all the essential treatments without anyone

knowing you have slipped away."

Nourish Your Skin

"In winter our skin dries out with the harsh

weather, central heating and change of diet,"

says Emma. "It is harder to exfoliate as

efficiently as in the summer, when we have a

fresher, healthier diet and moisturise our skin

regularly with sun screen."

A lack of exercise during the winter months

leads to a sluggish circulation. "Cellular renewal

slows too as our bodies prepare for

hibernation. Circulation around the eyes and

mouth, for instance, becomes congested,"

advises Emma.

A Microdermabrasion facial is apparently the

deepest exfoliation facial you can get without a

chemical peal. It is claimed to dislodge and

remove black heads, stimulate circulation and

improve skin tone. "At home you can continue

the good work by using a facial scrub twice a

week. Help nourish your skin with a night

cream and use a hydrating day cream,"

Emma recommends.
