Four years ago, Local Beacon was launched. Wow – four whole years. When starting out it was just me, local lass from Talgarth. Now the team consists of: Jackie who comes up with eye-catching advert designs and layouts; Veronica who books in adverts and keeps in touch with local businesses; Clare who helps with the admin side of things and keeps me organised; Robert and Paul who between them deliver the magazine to all homes in Brecon and the community points; and then there’s me who slots in where needed and oversees things. A huge thank you to this team and to all the monthly contributors. Hopefully we do you proud and create a much needed publication for our community.

So here we are in September, the children are just about to go back to school and the parents can get back into their routine. This issue really does have a variety of articles: from baby reflexology to discovering Aloe Vera; from Psychic Medium to why mediate; from a book review to a choir profile; and from business features to our regular contributors. If you would like us to feature your business or maybe something local that you are involved in, please drop us an email or give me a call.

The what’s on section is a vital part of this publication. It has such a range of classes, groups, meetings, events. Perhaps you attend a local class or group, be it for families, art related, fitness ... please could you email me the details and I can tell you if we could list the details for free. If the event is non profit making I can assure you we can. If it is a business, ie a yoga class, there may be a small charge. Please do get in touch so we can grow this much used and needed part of your community magazine.

Name of choir: Alive and Kickin’ Community Choir

Where are your singers from: From around the Brecon area, but as far afield as Merthyr Tydfil.

Been going since: It has been running since May 20�3, after many people approached me about creating a choir for people who simply love singing. As a trained natural voice practitioner, I lead a choir for everyone – singers and non practised singers. No experience is necessary as the choir is all about having fun in the shared experience of singing as a group and that everyone has a right to sing, no matter how they sound. People often have barriers to expressing themselves through singing, often following something negative they have been told about their singing in the past, which has stopped them from singing in the present. The choir does lots of body and voice warm ups to get everyone completely relaxed, to remove anxieties and to find their ‘natural voices’ whilst also learning wonderful material, often with beautiful harmonies which feel great to sing in a group.

Choir members tell me they feel uplifted and happy for at least 3 days afterwards, so it also has the added bonus of being very beneficial for overall feelings of happiness and health and well-being!

Where and when do you practice: We always practise on a Monday evening from 7-9pm. The choir started off rehearsing at Coleg Powys (Brecon campus near the high school) and as that closed during the Summer we have been rehearsing at Llanddew Village Hall. We are thinking about returning to the college in September, all depending on the size of the group, as it is growing rapidly and we may need a bigger space again! Where do you perform: It is not essential that everyone who joins the choir has to perform (so dont let this put you off) and we have only been going since May so have only had two big performances. Our first performance was at the Coleg Powys Student Awards in Llandrindod Wells in June and our last gig was as part of the Brecon Fringe in August.

Songs you cover: We sing original material, as well as singing songs already in existence and from around the world. ranging from uplifting Acapella African songs to hauntingly beautiful piano driven songs.

As a practising singer/ songwriter and composer (I have worked in the creation of new material with Chinese popstars on behalf of the PRS as well having performed my Arts Council funded albums length work ‘Breaking the Fearwall’ at Hay Festival in 2012) I enjoy writing songs for the choir. I also welcome ideas of songs that people would like to bring to the choir and teach songs written by other Natural Voice Practitioners from around the UK.

Best moment so far: When we performed outside St Mary’s Church in Brecon town centre for the Brecon Fringe in August, the choir members went out into the audience to help around �00 people join in with an African song ‘Bele Mama’. It was great to get so many people singing and having fun on the spot! A really connecting experience that won’t be forgotten!

Future plans: We are looking forward to performing in all kinds of places in the future, such as for patients in hospitals and day care centres.

Our next big performance is as part of the Brecon Arts Festival in October.

Fantasy gig venue: Wherever we have sung so far, it has felt special and we always put our hearts and souls into it – again I must mention that people’s experience of the sessions are just as important as performances. Saying that, some kind of choir tour or exhange to somewhere exotic would be nice

and you can’t help but say you’d like to perform at venues as The Welsh Millenium Centre or Stadium, Cardiff or maybe even the Albert Hall, London!!!

Who would you like to see down the front: Simply the smiling faces of people enjoying our performance. I love the Nelson Mandela quote that ‘when we shine we allow others to do the same’. Thats what I hope we achieve for the audience through our performances.

Anything else we should know: All ages are welcome, upwards to infinity, our youngest member being aged �0. Sessions cost £5.00 per person and if new members would like to try a taster rather than committing themselves they are very welcome!

The choir has a hugely supportive environment so come along and give it a go and enjoy an uplifting musical experience on a Monday evening that will leave you feeling fantastic for the rest of the week!

Last month Cariad and I were invited along to see Complimentary Health Therapist, Helen Sheppard who is based in Llechfaen, just outside Brecon. The reason for our visit was so that Helen could teach me how to preform Baby Reflexology on my own child, something she is keen to offer in the Brecon area.

Helen has been qualified as a Practioner of Traditional Hand & Foot Reflexology since 1998 and over the years she has continued her training.

Cariad and I arrived and were greeted by Helen and Buddy, her rather excited black Lab. Cariad adores animals so Helen received little attention where as Buddy got smiles, laughter and vocal noises! The treatment room overlooks the Brecon Breacons so you instantly feel at ease. Helen proceeded to show me the point where I should gently massage to calm Cariad. To start off Cariad was a little grizzly and fidgeting, this was due to her suffering with teething pains. After about 5 minutes of me massaging this one point shown by Helen, Cariad started to relax.

Throughout the � hour, one-to-one session Helen takes you through various diagrams for both feet and hands – they start off for things that could help young babies such as colic and immune boosters but move onto older babies who may have sinus pain, blocked ears, teething ... this was ideal for our visit.

Cariad’s active personality meant it wasn’t plain sailing. There were times when we needed to introduce snacks to keep her occupied, and sing songs to keep her interested. Earlier that morning Cariad had woken with a blocked nose (often connected with her teething periods), I was shocked to see that half way through this session, Cariad’s nose became runny, after we’d been massaging the top of her big toes – the reflexology point for nose! With this and

Cariad being rather calm I am convinced the session was taking effect.

Helen is in the process of organising group meetings for parents to attend. As with me, Helen will guide you so you will be able to perform Reflexology with your own child. This knowledge has been priceless. I have since massaged Cariad’s feet and hands, sometimes the calming point following a bath, but also points such as the ear when I was concerned it was a little blocked and causing her pain. For me it’s a wonderful moment between my daughter and me, she even likes my singing! I’ve passed on my knowlege to her daddy. Admittedly not as good a teacher as Helen, but the basics so he too can connect in this way with our daughter.

On Thursday �2th September, one of the country’s most well known and respected Mediums will be returning to Theatr Brycheiniog, bringing messages of comfort to those who need to hear and understand that a friend or someone they cared about can still be with them. This he does to a breathtaking degree in his truly remarkable show. Often working with photographs or objects, Tony uses his extraordinary paranormal abilities to communicate amazingly accurate messages.

Even as a child Tony knew he was different from other children. From an early age he was aware of seeing people before him that others could not see. PRiORY WiPriory’s July meeting was tinged with sadness. Former President and current County Board of Trustees’ member, Pam Abrahams, has died. She will be remembered for her bubbly personality, common sense and her hard work for the organisation. She will be missed. President Marian Carrod paid tribute to Pam and her achievements and members stood for a short period of time in respect of her memory.

Last year, Anna Newey, a long standing member died. As she had enjoyed attending meetings so much, her family made a very generous donation to Priory W I in her memory. It was decided to purchase a special glass vase.

Kathryn Roberts of Gate Gallery and Glassworks was consulted and she produced an unique vase on which she had engraved a view of the Cathedral. This was encompassed by copper leaves suggesting the beech trees in the Groves. The Priory W I logo was added. Surrounding the neck of the vase, the following inscription was engraved – ‘In memory of Anna Newey’.

Kathryn Roberts brought the completed vase to the meeting. Members were delighted that Mr and Mrs John Newey were present to witness the commemorative vase being presented to the President. Everyone agreed what an excellent choice had been made and admired Kathryn’s expertise.

After refreshments, Mr David Sinnett gave a very interesting and often humorous talk about being a

driving instructor; the history of driving tests and problems several older drivers today experience. He advised his audience to visit opticians regularly and reminded them that after the age of 70, driving licences have to be renewed every 3 years. Many questions were asked and comments made, especially about the traffic lights at the bottom of Ship Street. Everyone enjoyed answering his Highway Code questions. He was thanked by Doris Jones.

During the business part of the evening, Lynne Jones gave an account of the Annual Council Meeting. The President welcomed Pam Holmes back after her recent illness. Lynne Jones won the raffle given by Laura Newnes. The competition for the best limerick was judged by Mr Huw Carrod. Mariane Morgan was first, Lynne Jones and Maureen Evans third.

Try something new this autumnArts Alive Wales in Crickhowell have just launched their autumn programme of creative courses and events. Situated in The Old School, Brecon Road, the light and airy studio is home to popular courses in Basket Making, Pottery and Book Art, which have been extended this season to offer ten-week terms.

Brecon based artist, Veronica Gibson, will be hosting two weekend workshops, drawing and painting harvest produce at Llangattock allotments (5/6th Oct) and creating woodcut prints (�6/�7th Nov) in time for the festive season. Plus, look out for news of the Winter Gathering, affordable craft fair (Friday 6th Dec), showcasing work by professional, local artists and makers.

Rebecca Spooner, Arts Development Manager, has been busy putting the programme together: “We’re particularly looking forward to our workshops for children and families this season; our half-term event for The Big Draw is a highlight. Wild in September Protectingwildlife for the future

I have been looking more closely at bumblebees and trying to sort out the different types. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust website has a useful guide to eight common species and I think I have photographed seven in my Brecon garden. The Tree Bumblebee pictured here with its distinctive pattern of orange thorax and black abdomen with white tail was new to me. I discovered that it only reached England from mainland Europe in 200� and has been spreading north and west, reaching Scotland this June. Most of the reported Welsh sightings have been around the coast, so the BeeWatch survey on the Trust’s website would welcome more records from our area.

Like our native bees they are extremely important as pollinators of wild and cultivated plants, including beans and peas, apples, raspberries and strawberries. Populations of many bees and other pollinating insects are in serious decline, and a major factor has been the loss of flower-rich habitats including 97% of meadows since the �930s. Gardeners, farmers and land managers can all help to address this critical

problem. The Trust is running a Volunteers Day at Bridgend on 22 September; find out more at www.bumblebeeconservation.org.

HOW DOES MEDIATION WORK?Mediation can best be defined as a non-adversarial process of dispute resolution, during which a neutral 3rd party helps the participants to have an open, honest conversation and identify an outcome which is mutually acceptable. The mediator does not propose solutions, make judgments or assess culpability or blame. The mediator’s role is to facilitate the participants’

With the bank rate set at 0.5pc, savers will continue to be penalised, but there are some ways to stay afloat.

The new Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, has committed to keeping the bank rate at 0.5pc until unemployment falls below 7pc. Analysts predict this will not occur until late 20�6. By this time savers will have suffered another three years of negative real returns.

An increase in the bank rate is usually used to curb inflation. With inflation currently standing above the Government’s target of 2%. A rise in the bank rate would have been expected. The Government is happy leaving inflation to its own devices as inflation helps to erode the £1.5 trillion of consumer and £� trillion of Government debt. Keeping the bank rate artificially low at 0.5pc is a way of stealthily taxing savers.

Low rates and high inflation will continue to encourage Britons into income producing assets, so we expect to see even greater demand for Buy to Lets, high-yielding shares, commercial property and any other hard assets. And we expect annuity rates to remain artificially depressed for the foreseeable future.

Savers will continue to be targeted for at least three years; this is reflected by the poor rates on the “best buy” savings accounts. While borrowers taking on large amounts of cheap debt through mortgages and loans will be the benefactors.

The Governor has already caused quite an impact. Let’s see if he has any other surprises in the future.

Hello little and big ones!

I am now one whole years old. For my birthday we were going to have a family get-together in the garden but it rained. It didn’t matter though as we went to Whitney Village Hall and we were able to hire it out for the afternoon. Village Halls are great for birthday parties. So much room ... I got to whiz round in my whizzie-walker after all my big cousins.

Last month we went on a family holiday and I went to the beach for the first time. The beach is such fun: I ate sand, made sandcastles, ate more sand, paddled in the sea, played ball games with Mummy, Daddy and James, and ate more sand! At nights we went to a Club House and me and Mummy had a bop on the dance floor. I love dancing.

Did you know there is a giant Bumble Bee at the Old Railway Line Nursery? He’s taller than my Daddy. He waves at all the children and grown ups. When they have Wild Wednesdays Buzzbie joins in all the fun and games. Make sure you go and see him.

Just over a month ago I was contacted by a local author, Emma Bennet. Emma grew up and lived in London, before falling in love and moving to Brecon to be with her own hero. Emma now lives with her husband, children, and many animals. The inspiration for ‘The Green Hills of Home’ comes from the landscape around her.

“Gwen Jones, a young Welsh writer, is desperate to save the family farmhouse from being sold from under her critically ill mother and herself. When she lands a lucrative three-book deal with an eminent publisher, she thinks her problems are all over. However, Gwen’s need to be near her sick mother means she’s unable to travel to London to work with her devilishly desirable editor, John Thatcher, and he must come and stay with her in Wales. Handsome and eminently capable, cosmopolitan John is used to getting his own way and has plans for the future which certainly don’t include being distracted by pretty Welsh girls; nevertheless when he journeys into the country to work with Gwen it’s not long before he finds himself falling in love with her, as well as the house she’s so anxious to save. But is John capable of loving anyone as much as his job? And when he has to decide between his goals and Gwen, which will he choose?’’

After speaking with Emma, a copy was sent to me in the post and packed in my suitcase for our up coming family holiday. Whilst the rest of the Badham family played happily in the outdoor pool, I began reading. Gwen the main character is a ‘country bumpkin’ just like me – very passionate about her roots, family and Welsh surroundings. So yes, from the off I could relate to the book. At times I found myself wanting to shake certain characters! I suppose that’s how it should be, to find yourself involved in the story, your imagination having had created the look of each person. I won’t ruin things by telling you the outcome, but I would advise you read it for yourself.

The book is available from The Hours as well as Amazon and is in Powys libraries, where you can purchase a copy.

iNGREDiENTS

30g/�oz butter

500g/�lb 2oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped

500g/�lb 2oz pears, peeled, cored and roughly chopped

�00g/3½oz sugar (or to taste)

�50g/5½z frozen blackberries

For the topping

250g/9oz unsalted butter

500g/1lb 2oz plain flour

�25g/4½oz soft light brown sugar

�25g/4½oz caster sugar

�25g/4½oz roasted hazelnuts, skinned, roughly chopped

� orange, zest only

PREPARATiON METHOD

Preheat the oven to �80C/350F/Gas 4.

For the fruit, heat the butter in a large roasting tray, add the chopped apples and pears. Sprinkle over the sugar and stir well. Cook for �0 minutes, or until the fruit is starting to soften and then set to one side.

Make the topping by rubbing together the butter, flour and sugar with your fingers until it has a texture like very large breadcrumbs. Stir in the roughly chopped hazelnuts.

To finish the fruit, stir the blackberries into the apple and pear mixture and then tip this into

a serving dish. Top with the crumble mixture. Bake for �5-20 minutes, or until the crumble is golden-brown.

Remove from the heat and leave to cool.

� vanilla pod, seeds scraped out

PREPARATiON METHOD

For the Chantilly cream, whisk the cream, icing sugar and seeds from the vanilla pod in a bowl until very soft peaks form and set aside until ready to serve.

Chantilly is a sweetened, vanilla-flavoured whipped cream used for desserts and puddings. it takes its name from Chantilly, a medieval French market town just north of Paris, famous for its whipped cream.

Brecknock Sinfonia 2013/14Brecknock Sinfonia’s 20�3/�4 season begins on Saturday September 2�st with a varied concert of familiar and less well-known works for piano and orchestra. The soloist is Nicholas Walker, who opens the concert with Gerald Finzi’s Eclogue for piano and strings. This piece was discovered after the composer’s death in �956 and is growing in popularity as it becomes more widely played. An eclogue is a classical poem portraying a rural idyll and the tuneful music captures a wistful longing for the beauty of Britain’s countryside.

The major work before the interval is Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. This was written for the composer’s son to perform. The outer movements are full of musical wit but the central Andante is unashamedly tuneful and romantic in the Russian tradition. For the second half the orchestra takes centre stage for Dvorak’s Eighth Symphony. Michael Bell conducts again.

The remaining concerts this season will be on November 2nd, January 25th, March 22nd and June 2�st.

After so many successes, Brecon Speakers Club collapsed a year or so ago. It is intended to regenerate it on a sustainable basis. Free coaching in public speaking will be offered in addition to debates on contemporary issues and the opportunity to enter local national contests (in which Brecon S.C. competed successfully in the past).

Similarly, the once-renowned Brecon Theological and Philosophical Society faded away. Brecon needs such a discussion group and, to stimulate its restoration, it is planned to organise one or two prototype meetings in the hope that it may again take off.
