Women’s History MonthThis Sunday, the Tribune would like to give readers a little history lesson in honor of Women’s History Month. Whether these names are familiar or new, these women made contributions above and beyond their own walk of life, contributions that helped not only those around them but future generations nationwide. Ada Hayden was a conservationist well before many knew what could be lost in the disappearing prairies. Maria Pearson knew that dignity and respect for native cultures was the way to honor the nation’s past. Neta Snook simply found no reason to be excluded from her passion for flying because of her gender. And Winifred Tilden saw the benefits and potential for women’s athletics long before our nation adopted Title IX in 1972. Meet some of the important women of Ames’ past.

Ada Hayden: Prairie preservationist Long before there was Earth Day, or Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring,” there was Ada Hayden, whose love of Iowa’s prairies became a lifetime of study and advocacy. Hayden grew up playing in the wild places of her family’s farm north of Ames. Born in 1884, she graduated from Ames High School in 1904 and had already found a mentor, Louis Pammel, a professor at Iowa State College, who encouraged her to pursue her interest in botany. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in botany from Iowa State College in 1908, received a master’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis, and came back to her hometown for further graduate work. She became the first woman to receive a doctorate degree from Iowa State College in 1918 and was only the fourth person, male or female, to do so. She published 29 papers over the course of her career, mostly studying native Iowa flora. She became the curator of the ISU herbarium in 1934 and collected more than 30,000 specimens during her time there. She advocated for a state system of prairie preserves, and one in Howard County was named in her honor by the Iowa Conservation Commission after her death. In 1988, the ISU herbarium was named in her honor, and in 2007, Hayden was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2001, voters in Ames approved the purchase of 437 acres of land, including Hallet’s Quarry, for what became known as Ada Hayden Heritage Park.

Maria Pearson “Running Moccasins”: Honoring ancestors Maria Pearson, a Yankton Sioux born in 1932 in Springfield, S.D., was also given the native name Hai-Mecha Eunka, which translates as Running Moccasins. An Ames resident the last 16 years of her life until her death in 2003, Pearson was the driving force behind Iowa’s 1976 legislation protecting Native American remains

and providing for their repatriation. Pearson protested the treatment of native remains in 1971 when her husband, John Pearson, an engineer with the Iowa Highway Commission, told her about a highway construction project near Council Bluffs. The discovered remains of an Indian woman and baby were sent to the state archeologist’s office for research, while the remains of 26 white pioneers were relocated to a cemetery. Pearson wore native dress to meet with then-Gov. Robert Ray and the state archeologist. While they reached an agreement for the reburial of the Indian woman and her baby, Pearson’s activism led to the adoption of the 1976 law protecting native remains, and Iowa was the first state in the nation to do so. Pearson’s activism is considered instrumental in the adoption of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act of 1990, which protects Native American remains and artifacts on federal land and in museums. In her lifetime, Pearson was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, served as a tribal elder for the Yankton Sioux and was named an Iowa Woman of Achievement.

Neta Snook: Determined to fly Neta Snook, growing up in Ames at the turn of the last century, was so fascinated by aviation that nothing stopped her from learning to fly, including the World War I and rejection from flight school because of her gender. Though Snook gave up flying completely upon her marriage to William Southern in 1921, as was typical in those days, her career lasted long enough that she could pass on her talents to another pioneering aviatrix, Amelia Earhart. Born in 1896 in Illinois, Snook moved to Ames while she was in her teens, and she graduated from Ames High School in 1915. She attended Iowa State College, and took courses in mechanical drawing and combustion engines. She applied to the flight school in Newport News, Va., but was told no females were allowed. Instead, she was admitted to the new flying school in Davenport. She was the only woman in the school. The second time she applied to the school in Virginia she was admitted. Though the government suspended all civilian flying for the duration of World War I, it did issue her a license for training flights only, and “I ignored it, as did my pilot friends,” Snook said. After barnstorming tours across the country, Snook moved to California to work as a licensed pilot instructor. It was there that she met and taught Earhart. Snook died in 1991, and was later inducted into the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame.

Winifred Tilden: Women in sports At a time in the early 20th century when it was believed that physical exertion might make women ill or damage their ability to have children, Winifred Tilden was

organizing women’s athletic clubs for Iowa State College, including vigorous sports to make the traditionalists swoon, including swimming, track and basketball. Tilden was born in 1880 in Ames, the daughter of George and Lydia Tilden, early pioneers and owners of Tilden’s Store, a mercantile on Main Street. Winifred left Ames High School before graduating to enter college. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College in 1903, she assumed the rather stuffy-sounding title of Directress of Physical Culture at Iowa State College. Tilden introduced numerous competitive athletic opportunities for women, including golf, field hockey, archery, gymnastics and bowling. Under her direction, women’s athletics grew from just 100 Iowa State College co-eds to thousands by the time she retired in 1944.

During a leave of absence during World War I, she directed recreational programs for American soldiers in France. Tilden’s travels abroad brought her into contact with progressive ideas about physical education and athletic training, and she brought these back to Iowa and her students. She served on several national physical education committees and was responsible for advocating for a permanent home for women’s physical education on campus, dedicated in 1941 and part of what is now the Forker Building. Tilden died in 1948.

Ames High School alumnus Jacob Rosenberg took a walk he will never forget Thursday in Iowa City. Rosenberg, who graduated from Ames High in 2007 and now attends the University of Iowa, was chosen to lead the Pledge of Allegiance before President Barack Obama took the stage to deliver a speech touting the recent passage of health care reform legislation. The scene was UI’s Field House, a multipurpose recreational building,

which despite security trappings and a crowd of about 3,000, still looked very much like a gym, Rosenberg said. “I had to walk all the way across the gym to the podium,” he said. “It was a long walk, and I was nervous until a couple of friends in the crowd yelled at me to give me encouragement.” Rosenberg, a junior majoring in political science, ethics and public policy, said he didn’t hesitate when UI’s Associate Vice President and Dean of Students David Grady phoned to ask him if he would be up to the challenge of leading the Pledge.

“I’ve known the Pledge of Allegiance since I was a little child,” he said. Rosenberg said he learned civic responsibility as a child from several role models, including his father, Ralph Rosenberg, the executive director of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission. The younger Rosenberg, now co-president of the University of Iowa Democrats, said he’s eager to help his generation cool down the partisan rhetoric and restore trust in the political system. “Why do you think 18- to 24-year-olds turn to ‘The Colbert Report’ and ‘The Daily Show’ to get their news?” he said. “The funny guys diffuse the rhetoric to deliver the best journalism.” Although Rosenberg didn’t get to meet Obama, he said he was thrilled to be in the same room with him. “I was grateful to see Obama, and I think he’s on the right path,” Rosenberg said. “It’s great he got the health care bill passed, and I’m fully on board. Whether you’re a liberal or a conservative, it’s a step in the right direction.”

Kelsey Knutson, Class of 2006, is a first team All-American. Competing for the University of Michigan, Kelsey tied for 3rd on the balance beam at NCAA Gymnastics meet in Gainesville, Fla. There were 72 competing in this event. Kelsey has been a consistent performer all four years at Michigan. Her best performance this season was a 9.95 at a meet versus Alabama. She’s due to graduate May 1 and then it’s off to Law School at the University of Minnesota. It is believed she is one of the few Ames High graduates to become a first team All-American.

It is our intention to continue to publish three newsletters per year--April, August and December. Please send worthy newsletter information and articles to Jack Smalling or Bill Ripp at 1921 Ames High Drive, Ames, Iowa 50014. - Jack and Bill -

ISU Student to be 2010 Udall Scholar Samuel Bird, an Iowa State University second-year student in global resource systems and economics, has been named a 2010 Udall Scholar by the Udall Foundation. Bird is a 2008 graduate of Ames High School. The foundation, established by Congress in 1992, awards scholarships to undergraduate students committed to careers related to the environment or Native American issues.

Bird was selected as one of 80 scholars from a field of applicants nominated by universities and colleges throughout the United States. Another ISU student -- Clark Colby, a senior in architecture and environmental studies from Urbandale -- received one of 50 honorable mentions. They were selected from a field of 537 candidates nominated by 256 colleges and universities. Scholars are selected for their participation in campus activities, research or service that demonstrates a commitment to environmental, natural resource, or Native American health care or tribal policy. Scholarships go to students who show promise of making significant contributions in these areas through scientific advances, service or community action. Bird lived and worked in Uganda last summer

as part of the ISU-Makerere University Uganda Service Learning Program. For the past three years, he has organized an annual fundraiser to purchase building supplies for schools in Uganda. Bird is president of the ISU International Agriculture Club and represented the International Association of Students in Agricultural and Related Sciences at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development in New York City in 2009. He has worked as a learning community peer mentor, and as a research assistant for sociology associate professor Robert Mazur, analyzing household surveys from Uganda. Bird will participate in the 2010 Dean’s Global Agriculture and Food Program, conducting research at Biodiversity International in Rome. He is a member of the Honors Program and Cardinal Key honorary society. Following graduation in May 2012, he plans to attend graduate school in applied economics and sustainable development. The 2010 Udall Scholars will assemble in August in Tucson, Ariz., to receive their awards and meet policymakers and community leaders in environmental fields, tribal health care and governance. The Udall Scholar receives a scholarship of up to $5,000.

Ames Education FoundationTransfer of Wealth – Benefit

the AEF There have been many articles about the phenomenal transfer of wealth that is taking place in our country. It is estimated that $41 trillion, or more, will be transferred by 2052. In Iowa, the estimated wealth transfer that will take place between 2000 and 2049 is $531 billion. This projection, reported by the Community Vitality Center, is based on the recorded wealth transfer during 1998 through 2002, the demographics of each county, and an assumed growth rate of two percent. For Story County the estimated transfer of wealth for that same time period is $16.722 billion. The Community Vitality Center reports that annually, Iowans transferred $4.933 billion in their estates as shown from an analysis of probate records filed during the years of 1998 through 2002. The annual transfer for Story County is $116 million. What could that mean for the Ames Education Foundation’s endowment program? If you contributed $10,000 to the AEF in your estate plan, the income generated could help endow our mini-grant program, or endow the Support Our Students (SOS) program. In 15 years that gift of $10,000 would grow to $16,000 and would have generated an estimated $9,000 in income. That could fund at least 18 classroom projects through the mini-grant program or help over 90 families in financial stress to purchase the back-to-school supplies needed for their children through out SOS program. In 25 years that $10,000 gift would grow to $23,000 and generate $19,000 in income. In 50 years that same $10,000 would grow to $57,000 and generate $66,000 in income – supporting up to 132 classroom projects, and helping over 600 students with their back-to-school supplies. Including the Ames Education Foundation in your will is one of the simplest ways you can make a significant contribution to the future lives of thousands of students. Please let us know if you have named the AEF in your estate plan or if you have questions about how to make that happen. The future leaders of tomorrow are our students of today.

Phantom Hoops and Dreams Each year the Foundation raises money through a phantom nonevent for the Support Our Students (SOS) program, which helps children who are not able to afford all the school supplies necessary to attend classes. This year’s Phantom Hoops and Dreams was a little different because we were all thrilled that the AHS Boys Basketball won their 2nd State Title and attending a game was a joy! It was a season to remember and Ames fans are number one!

It was a dream and a wish, but never a whim, that the AHS boy’s basketball team ended the season with a

2nd State Title win!

We traveled south cheering them on,clapping and singing the Ames High fight song,

The team kept winning game after game, bringing 50 plus victories to the school’s name.

Coach Downs and the team are now leading us all,to victory in the classroom for kids this fall.

They’ll shoot two for the team and run up the score, knowing that pens and pencils are needed, and so much more.

Notebooks, folders, calculators too,are essential for students to succeed in school.

So join the winners and stand up for our team,It’s through learning that we can reach our dreams.

This is the twelfth year the Ames Education Foundation has hosted the Phantom fundraiser. To date, over $125,000 has been distributed to the schools in the Ames district to help students come back to school prepared to learn. We hope you will join us in supporting our students!

We Get Letters... It is always interesting to receive the Ames High School Alumni Newsletter as it has some great anecdotes and keeps us up to date with what is going on in Ames, Iowa. I am a graduate of the AHS Class of 1952, and it is unbelievable where the time has gone and where fellow classmates have ended up their careers and lives. The year 1952 was a great year for me, and in looking back, was a pivotal year in my life. To be a part of the “50’s” was something special, and to be a member of the football team was even more special. I cherish those days and have fond memories of the people and the way we had good clean fun, even though some thought of me as a “wild person”, it was nothing in comparison to what some people do today. I am still in touch with Bill and Marge Sumberg, and we meet with them at least once a year to play golf and tell war stories. I guess Bill and I were considered “The Wild Ones”, but look how we turned out. Bill ended up being a stockbroker and a Colonel in the Army, while I ended up being Chairman of the Board of Global transportation. I don’t think we did too bad for ourselves, but we never forgot our classmates from Ames High. I think Bill was the only person who knew where the “Little Brown Jug” was buried, and it is probably still there. Just to let you know, the Secretary of Commerce of the United States, has appointed me to Chair the Southern California Regional District Export Council, so I am still active in the international trade community. I am also Vice Chair of the Advisory Board for California State University Dominguez Hill, and I lecture in their classes on international business in my spare time. I am also on the Board of Directors for the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles. Keep up the great work on the Newsletter as it does keep us in touch and up to date with Ames, Iowa By the way, we also have weather problems in Southern California. Today we had severe blue skies!

Best to all,

Guy Fox, MBA, LCBClass of ‘52

Aiming High and Making a Difference. . . Sara Siebert is a 1997 graduate of Ames High School. She then earned an undergraduate degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa and a graduate degree in International Public Health from the University of California in Los Angeles. She is currently a staff member of Beyond Borders and serving in Haiti. David Diggs, the General Coordinator of Beyond Borders, wrote the fallowing letter to Sara’s mother, Bernadette, the former secretary in the Student Services Center at Ames High School: “Sara Siebert just wrote to me from Haiti after a particularly moving experience in one of the camps in Port-au-Prince. Her message tells of the crucible of contrasts Haiti is, especially since the earthquake. Violence and love, fear and courage, extreme pain and relentless joy all intermingle in a crowded camp of earthquake survivors. Sara is our newest staff member in Haiti and was recruited to join Beyond Borders well before the earthquake struck in January. She came to us with tremendous expertise in developing programs to prevent sexual and domestic violence and support survivors of this violence and has more than 13 years experience working with large and small organizations in Latin America, Africa and Asia. With Sara’s leadership and support from the International Rescue Committee, Beyond Borders just completed two weeks of training for women leaders in three large camps. Here is what Sara wrote: “I just came from a particularly tough camp in Port-au-Prince today. There’s a zone within it where a lot of prisoners who escaped when the prison collapsed have been living. It’s not an easy place to be a woman. When I first arrived a few weeks ago, I came looking for potential support people for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. I asked around about who was respected in the community--who did women flee to when they needed help? At first no one wanted to be involved. They said ‘yes women are beaten here all the time, and raped. We hear them screaming and there’s no one to help them. It’s too dangerous to get involved. But little by little, we found women who wanted to help and were not afraid. They had incredible spirits and guts and life to contribute. We invited them to training--several days of reflective training on peer counseling and basic community network building related to violence against women. Later, I went back to see what they had learned. They showed off their skills in listening and non-directive options giving. Then we started to chat. They sang a song they’d learned, and we got up to dance. People’s capacity for spontaneous joy in the most unlikely places astounds me. Other women came out of their tents to see what the joy was about. Then the women wanted to show us their homes, so we marched through the most dangerous part of camp. Big, tough guys watched as these 10 incredible women marched through their neighborhood like they finally owned it. We met their families and danced together. Seeing the joy of those women who are unafraid to be joyful made other women start smiling--and that’s the miracle that keeps me going!”

Dear Mr. Smalling, While talking yesterday to a cousin who also graduated from Ames High she mentioned seeing John L. Farber 1934 on the lost list. He was my uncle and died in Orange, CA October 17, 1969. He went to sleep and never woke up. About five years ago his son Jeff curled up on a sofa and never woke up. Sincerely, Dolo-res Lodden McAllister ‘47

Robert K. BraytonBS '56, Electrical EngineeringBerkeley, Calif.

Almost every microchip designed in the past 20 years has Robert K. Brayton’s stamp on it. As one of the world’s leading experts in computer-aided design (CAD), and Electronic Design

Automation (EDA), Brayton’s methods have been adopted throughout the microchip industry. His research at the University of California–Berkeley has made him one of the most visible and respected members of the international EDA community. After earning his doctorate in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brayton joined the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where he developed algorithms for numerical analysis, which were used in IBM’s proprietary circuit simulator, the

Advanced Statistical Analysis Program (ASTAP). His work in logic synthesis, used in the Berkeley tools ESPRESSO and MIS, revolutionized automated logic design, and has been the basis for many software tools offered by leading CAD vendors. He took early retirement from IBM in 1987 and joined the faculty at Berkeley, where he held the Buckner Chair in EECS and retired as the Cadence Distinguished Professor of Engineering. The author of 10 books and more than 450 papers, Brayton is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the IEEE.
