Busiest August on record MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – The park host-ed 916,166 visits in August 2017. This was the busi-est August on record, up 8.93 percent from August 2016, which saw 841,036 visits. The second busiest August was in 2015 and saw 854,408 visits. Visits were slightly down in August 2016 when the South Entrance Station was closed for 6 days due to the Berry Fire. This year, the park experienced increased visitation during the days immediately surrounding the solar eclipse that occurred on August 21. An especially large number of visits occurred on August 22. Traffic congestion that day caused the park to briefly limit access to the Old Faithful and West Thumb Geyser Basin parking areas as well as to send rangers to manage traffic at Madison Junction. So far in 2017, the park has hosted 3,232,708 visits, down 1.11 percent from the same period in 2016 (which was the highest on record). The table below shows the trend over the last five years. Year-to-date visitation in 2017 is 17.4 percent higher than five years ago in 2012. The continued high level of visitation at Yellowstone underscores how important it is for visitors to plan your trip to the park. Visitors, please anticipate de-lays at popular attractions, plan ahead, and check road conditions on the park’s website. Detailed park visitation information and additional information on how these statistics are calculated is available online

WOMAN MAULED BY GRIZZLY IN TOM MINER BASIN

BEAR SPRAY STOPS ATTACK (HELENA, Mont.)—A local woman was mauled by a grizzly bear on a private ranch in the Tom Miner area north of Gardiner early Saturday.

The female victim and two companions were near the carcass of a domestic cow when the incident occurred.

When the bear made contact, the victim laid on her stomach to protect her vital organs. She was bitten on her legs and back.

Her companions used bear spray to scare off the bear and stop the attack.

The victim is being treated for her injuries.

This is the second mauling in southwest Montana in a little over a week. On Monday, Sept. 5, an archery hunter was mauled by a grizzly in the south end of the Gravelly Range.

While these incidents were relatively far from each other, both involved bears feeding on carcasses. In both cases, bear spray played an important role.

These events should serve as a stark reminder that Montana is bear country. Hunters and others working and playing in bear country should be especial-ly alert for grizzlies, carry bear spray, and know how to use it.

Remembering Yellowstone: Speaker Series Hosted by Yellowstone Gateway Museum

The Friends of the Yellowstone Gateway Museum announce their

upcoming fall speaker series, Remembering Yellowstone, featuring

regional authors who explore various aspects of the world’s first

national park. The four, bi-monthly programs begin on September 13

and continue through mid-October. Topics include ranger stories,

rephotography of the park, cowboy tales from along a park trails,

and the National Park Service’s Mission 66 program.

All programs are part of the museum’s new Wednes-

day evening programming, Hump Day History, and

are held at 7:00 pm at the Yellowstone Gateway Mu-

seum, 118 W. Chinook, Livingston. The speaker series

is free and open to the public and refreshments are

served. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for people to enjoy

the museum’s exhibits before the program. Attendees

must climb stairs to the top floor of museum for the

program.

On September 13, author Orville E. “Butch” Bach, Jr. gives a program about his book, Reflections from Yel-lowstone and Beyond: 43 years as a Seasonal Ranger. Bach worked most of his ranger career in Yellowstone National Park. He is also the author of Hiking the Yel-lowstone Backcountry, Exploring the Yellowstone Backcountry, and Tracking the Spirit of Yellowstone. He and his wife Margaret reside in Bozeman, Mon-tana. Bach will share many stories during the evening and will sign books after the program. Two weeks later, on September 27, photojournalist Bradly J. Boner gives a program about his rephotog-raphy book, Yellowstone National Park: Through the Lens of Time. The book compares more than 100 pho-tos that pioneer photographer William Henry Jackson took during the 1871 Hayden Survey with Boner’s contemporary photos of the same scenes. His book also includes history, extensive notes, and personal tales. On October 11, author Don W. DeJarnett gives a pro-gram based on his new book, Cowboy Tales on the Eaton Trail in Yellowstone. The author spent time as an Eaton cowboy himself, and through the use of sto-ries, he takes readers and program attendees on an im-aginary journey through the park. On October 25, Lesley Gilmore, Director of Historic Preservation Services for CTA Architects Engineers and author of Canyon Village in Yellowstone: The Model for Mission 66, gives a program about the his-tory of Mission 66, which enabled the National Park Service to upgrade, improve, and infuse funding into the neglected and over-used parks from 1956 through 1966.
