Introduction

These 10 questions are for you to use to help get ready for the load chart part of the CraneSafe Certification assessment for Mobile Hydraulic – 20 Tonnes & Under.

The questions on your assessment will be different from these but will be presented in the same format as these questions.

With the questions are the answers with the relevant load charts. The answers explain how we arrived at the correct answer and you can use this to help work through any questions you may have gotten incorrect. We have not included all of the charts for this crane - but everything you need to answer the questions is included. You do not need the crane manual or full load chart package to answer the questions.

• 1/2 inch 6 x 19 IWRC, IPS, load line on main winch (main boom lifts)

• 1/2 inch Rotation Resistant line on auxiliary winch (jib lifts)

Load Chart & Rigging Answers

Q1 Net Capacity

To find the gross capacity you must check the capacity at 22 feet main boom length at a 15 foot radius in the over the front quadrant: 14,500 lbs.

You must also check the capacity at 36 feet boom length at a 15 foot radius in the over the front quadrant: 14,900 lbs.

NOTE: #2 Operation applies when either radius or boom length, or both, are between listed values, the smaller of the two listed load ratings shall be used.

Net Capacity = Gross Capacity – Weight of Load Handling Devices

Deductions (Weight of Load Handling Devices)

2 sheave block 325 lbs

Rigging 60 lbs

385 lbs

Gross Capacity: 14,500 lbs

Net Capacity: 14,500 – 385 = 14,115 lbs

Q2 Maximum Radius

Maximum Radius = Load Weight + Load Handling Devices

Gross Load

Load weight 5,900 lbs

3 sheave block 350 lbs

Rigging 100 lbs

6,350 lbs

Go to the over the front quadrant at a boom length of 52 feet then follow the column down until you come to a capacity that’s equal to or greater than the gross load of 6,350 lbs.

Maximum Radius: 25 feet

Page 24: LOAD CHART & RIGGING PRACTICE EXERCISES – QUESTIONS

Load Chart & Rigging PRACTICE EXERCISES Mobile Hydraulic – 20 Tonnes & Under Lorain LCD-150 (1)

www.fulford.ca CraneSafe + Fulford Certification PEX24

Q3 Lowest Boom Angle

Gross Load on Crane = Load Weight + Load Handling Devices

Gross Load

Load weight 4,200 lbs

Hook ball 121 lbs

Rigging 80 lbs

4,401 lbs

NOTE: #2 Operation applies.

At the 36 foot boom length at 0 degrees. The capacity is 4,500 lbs which is more than the gross load on the crane in the over the side quadrant.

At the 52 foot boom length at 49.4 degrees. The capacity is 5,600 lbs which is more than the gross load on the crane in the over the side quadrant.

The higher of the two boom angles applies to determine the lowest boom angle the gross load can be boomed down.

Lowest Boom Angle: 49.4 degrees

Q4 Maximum Load

Because the 27 foot radius is between values listed, you must go to the next longer radius of 30 feet to determine gross capacity.

Maximum Load to be Lifted = Gross Capacity – Load Handling Devices

Deductions (Load Handling Devices)

2 sheave block 325 lbs

Hook ball x 2 (see note) 242 lbs

Rigging 80 lbs

647 lbs

Gross Capacity at a 27 foot radius: 5,100 lbs

Maximum Load = 5,100 – 647 = 4,453 pounds

NOTE: #6 Operation applies.

When jibs are erected but unused, add two (2) times the weight of any hook block, slings and auxiliary lifting devices at the jib head to the load.

Page 25: LOAD CHART & RIGGING PRACTICE EXERCISES – QUESTIONS

Load Chart & Rigging PRACTICE EXERCISES Mobile Hydraulic – 20 Tonnes & Under Lorain LCD-150 (1)

www.fulford.ca CraneSafe + Fulford Certification PEX25

Q5 Maximum Load

Because the boom angle is between values listed, you must go to the next lower boom angle of 51 degrees to determine gross capacity.

Net Capacity = Gross Capacity – Load Handling Devices

Deductions (Load Handling Devices)

Hook ball 121 lbs

Rigging 40 lbs

161 lbs

Gross Capacity at 51 degrees, 15 degree offset: 3,100 lbs

Net Capacity = 3,100 – 161 = 2,939 lbs

Q6 Boom Length & Radius at Creep Speed

Gross Load

Load weight 3,900 lbs

2 sheave block 325 lbs

Rigging 80 lbs

4,305 lbs

Main Boom Length: 52 feet

Radius: 20 feet

Q7 Pick & Carry

See notes 4 and 5 on set up for pick and carry.

Page 26: LOAD CHART & RIGGING PRACTICE EXERCISES – QUESTIONS

Q8 Chain Slings

Answer: 1/2 inch

The capacity of a 1/2 inch chain sling in a 2-leg bridle hitch at a 60 degree angle is 16,627 pounds.

The slings are choked so there is a 25% reduction in capacity: 16,627 x .75 = 12,470 pounds

Q9 Web Slings

Answer: 5 inch

The capacity of a 5 inch nylon web sling in a 2-leg bridle hitch at a 45 degree angle is 7,775 pounds.

The slings are choked so there is a 25% reduction in capacity: 7,775 x .75 = 5,831 pounds

Q10 Web Slings

Answer: 4 inch

The capacity of one 4 inch nylon web sling in a single basket hitch at a 45 degree angle is 6,220 pounds.

The slings are in a Double Basket Hitch: 6,220 x 2 = 12,440 pounds
