Development means improving. In Geography it describes whether a country has good or bad facilities for its people.

Development is often linked to how wealthy a country is but money by itself doesn’t make a place better.

Key TermsDevelopment = improving something or somewhere. More developed countries have better facilities e.g. hospitals, clean water MEDC = wealthy countriesLEDC = poorer countries

What is development?

How can we measure development?

In the back of the Atlas (P.134-141) you can find a series of pages that give you a lot of information about countries.

Lots of this can be used to help us decide whether or not a country is more or less developed.

Which of these pieces of information do you think would be useful? Why?

How we measure development

Development isn’t just measured by wealth or life expectancy. We decide whether countries are more or less developed based on lots of things.

Development indicators = things that indicate (give us some idea of) a countries level of development.

Can you think of anything that we could use to give us an idea of development?

Life ExpectancyIt suggests good access to safe water because that would reduce illness and death. It suggests good access to healthcare because people can have vaccines to reduce disease and can be treated if they are injured or fall ill. There more chance of decent sanitation and hygiene which means diseases (like cholera) are less commonIt also suggests good access to education which means that there are more doctors. It also leads to more children spending more time in school

How can development

be measured?

Even if a great indicator can’t give a perfect picture of development. The Human Development Index (HDI) takes into account economic wealth and social well-being. The HDI looks at three things1.Income per person2.Literacy rates3.Life expectancy

In the 1960s the UN tried to divide the more developed and less developed countries using the Brandt line? You’re going to draw a

Brandt line on your map using your data to decide where more and less developed countries are.

TasksThe Brandt Line – a line used to divide MEDCs and LEDCs. It can change.Look at your map1.a. Describe the distribution of the most and least developed countries. b. Do you think this distribution would be different if you mapped a different indicator? 2. Is the Brandt line static (permanent) or dynamic (can change)? Explain your answer using examples

Discuss your opinion with your neighbour (that means the people sitting next to you not those on the other side of the room!) and try to come up with a definition of development.

Write this out on your post it
