LLPOA boat inspections were in full swing over the weekend with lots of residents’ boats coming out of storage and area fisher -people taking advantage of the beautiful weather. Board member Linda Syzmanski is doing a great job running our Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Program but we need your help. On Memorial Day weekend from Friday to Monday we had nine sets of volunteers that inspected more than 35 boats and gave information packets out to boaters. However, and unfortunately, we had five time slots without inspectors. There are two things that you can do if you want to preserve and protect Lone Lake from zebra mussels, Eurasian Water Milfoil and other invaders: 1) Sign-up and go to the DNR Boat Inspection Training on June 7 th (see details in this New Brief). 2) Sign-up to be an inspector for the 4 th of July weekend. We have four openings and this is a great opportunity to inspect and educate the public about AIS. The three- hour volunteer shift is downright enjoyable -- meeting and educating lake residents and area boaters as well as serving to protect our beautiful lake. Send an email to Linda Szymanski at [email protected] to let her know your availability. (Note continues on next page.) NEWS BRIEF

Boat Inspectors: Training Set June 7

Time at the lake is precious — and so is the quality of our water. You can help keep it free of invasive species by volunteering a few hours every summer as a boat inspector. More inspectors are urgently needed.

The DNR is offering a training session on Sat., June 7 from 9 a.m. until noon at Hazelton Township Hall, 24248 U.S. Highway 169 (4 miles south of Farm Island Store). Once trained, your certification will be valid for three years (versus one). Current inspectors should attend the 2014 training to be re-certified, since our certification expired last year. (Story continues on next page.)

Weekend a good one; more AIS help needed Steve Frazier, LLPOA President:

It was a great Memorial Day weekend on Lone Lake – sunny, breezy and beautiful! Most apparent is the high water on the lake. We have exceeded the OHWL – Ordinary High Water Level mark and the water is flowing out of the culvert on the north end in spite of the beaver’s best efforts to block it up! Thank you to everyone for cooperating and not having high wakes next to the shoreline -- we noticed that our water sports enthusiasts were staying to the middle of the lake. Aitkin County is under a flood watch until the end of May so high water is everywhere.$

LLPOA boat inspections were in full swing over the weekend with lots of residents’ boats coming out of storage and area fisher-people taking advantage of the beautiful weather. $

There are two things that you can do if you want to preserve and protect Lone Lake from zebra mussels, Eurasian Water Milfoil and other invaders: 1) Sign-up and go to the DNR Boat Inspection Training on June 7th (see details in this New Brief). 2) Sign-up to be an inspector for the 4th of July weekend. We have four openings and this is a great opportunity to inspect and educate the public about AIS. The three-hour volunteer shift is downright enjoyable -- meeting and educating lake residents and area boaters as well as serving to protect our beautiful lake. Send an email to Linda Szymanski at [email protected] to let her know your availability. (Note continues on next page.)$

(Steve’s note - Cont. ) Part of our increase-in-dues discussion is about how we can help protect the lake from invasive species. It is difficult to even get the four main boating weekends staffed by volunteers. As a lake association we are exploring hiring certified DNR inspectors for heavy traffic times and weekends throughout the summer. This will be a discussion item at the Annual Meeting on July 26th.$

Where are the loons nesting? I spoke with lake resident Pat Humphreys, our “loon nest observer,” and he reports that there are no loons on our new nest. Pat said the two large loons that usually inhabit the nest tested it out early in the season. Then three days of unusually high winds blew the nest deep into the bay and the loons lost interest in nesting there. There appears to be several sets of loons on the lake but no confirmed nesting sites have been identified. Please let us know if you see any loons nesting on the lake and also if you see any baby loons (get pictures if you can). And remember – stay at least 150 feet away from loon nesting areas. Have a great Lone Lake summer and we’ll see you on the lake, Steve Frazier, LLPOA President

A refresher certification will be offered online in 2015 and in 2016.

Pre-registration is required so that training materials can be ordered.  CONTACT: Walt Weisser @ 218-927-3214 or at: [email protected]

During Bev Napurski’s boat inspection shift over the holiday weekend, 13 boats entered the lake. She utilizes “gentle persuasion” on the Nutting brothers, as the launch their boat.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered for inspection duty at the public access over the Memorial Day weekend. What wonderful weather! The time volunteers donate helps keep Lone Lake free of invasive species. Based on the inspection results from the weekend:$

* We had boat inspection volunteers for 64% of the time-slots available.$

* 41 inspections were conducted on 37 unique watercraft.$

* These 37 watercraft were last in 9 unique lakes (Minnesota and Iowa).$

***55% of these lakes have been identified as having aquatic invasive species.$

Holiday weekend boat inspectors talk ‘clean, drain, & dry’ to boaters at public launch

Most of the watercraft from Lone Lake were being launched for the first time. That is not the case for boats coming here from many other lakes. Some of these watercraft were in the above waters as early as the day before or the same day. This is why volunteers’ time inspecting watercraft is so valuable: reminding people to follow regulations that require them to ‘clean, drain and dry’ their boats and equipment between lakes..!Linda Szymanski, LLPOA AIS Team Leader. To become a boat inspector, sign up for the June 7th

DNR training. Volunteers are

needed for the 4th of July weekend!
