WHAT TO DO AT THE LAW FAIR

If you require any assistance at the fair, please find us at The Careers Service stand. Alternatively, please contact us in advance on 01865 274646, or email us at [email protected]

This fair has the aim of introducing you to a wide range of opportunities within the legal profession; in addition to representatives from Barristers’ Chambers, and Solicitors’ Practices (including International, City, and Regional firms), you will find The Govern-ment Legal Service (GLS),Free Representa-tion Unit (FRU), the Legal Aid Practitioners’ Group, the Young Legal Aid Lawyers’ Group and the Bar Council. The major institutions providing professional legal training are rep-resented too.

This is then a golden opportunity for you to meet and talk to a wide variety of lawyers, trainees, pupils, other legal professionals, recruitment managers, and course tutors.

They are coming because they want to talk to you about their organisations and what they offer in the way of training and legal work, and to encourage good applicants to apply.

There is a variety of personnel attending, many of whom are Oxford graduates, includ-ing legal professionals, trainees and pupils, recruitment managers, and representatives from professional bodies and specific sec-tors, eg Legal Aid. Establish to whom you’re talking (most will be wearing name badges), and direct your questions appropriately.

LOOK THROUGH THIS BOOKLET

This fair has more employers and organisa-tions that you are likely to be able to engage with even if you wanted to. Think first about who you want to talk to, and what topics you should raise.

We advise strongly that you read the pro-gramme entry for an organisation before you talk to its representatives.

As in all recruitment activities - discussion is a two-way process. You are assessing them, but employers are assessing you too, and may retain that information. Therefore do think about the impression you are creating by your approach, and questions, in particu-lar your opening one.

TALK TO A VARIETY OF EXHIBITORS

You may have some targets in mind already, but be open to new ideas, and explore. Make use of this opportunity to learn more about

different legal environments that may be unfamiliar to you, and what is involved. You may be surprised! Should you be at an early stage in your career thinking, some aspects and terms may be unfamiliar to you; but don’t be afraid to explore by asking for clari-fication in a sensible way.

ASK QUESTIONS

If you focus around some or all of these topics with recruiters, then your discussions should prove helpful:

• Nature of the work and its attractions• Particular strengths of the organisation• Likely developments for their kind of work• Their current & future recruitment targets • Selection criteria & methods of recruit-ment• Ongoing training and supervision • Opportunities for developing specialisa-tions, international movement, etc• Work experience (vacation schemes) op-portunities, and Open Days• Policies about choice of institutions for GDL, LPC or BPTC (BVC) courses• Grants towards training costs

But do please think about the questions you may have for the Course Providers too; it’s not often you have the chance to talk to so many in one place!

Where stands are busy, join in three way

conversations, and bring others into the discussion.

ATTEND CAREER TALKS

A series of 45-minute career talks will run during the fair at the Exam Schools. Entry will be on a “first come, first served” basis so there is no need to book.

PICK UP RECRUITMENT DIRECTORIES

Free copies of these and other useful legal publications will be available for you to pick up in the ‘Square’ too. Personnel from the publishers may be present also. They are useful people to talk to, and we suggest that you sign up to receive their weekly email services.

TALK TO A CAREERS ADVISER

Careers Advisers will be present throughout the day at the Careers Service stand (at the top of the stairs) to help you with any careers issues that you may wish to discuss.

We hope you will find your visit a stimulat-ing, interesting, useful, and - not least - an enjoyable one. We look forward to your feedback to plan the Law Fair next year.

Students with international legal qualifications and substantial legal work experience: The major-ity of the firms attending will be focused on promoting their training contract programmes for their London/UK offices and will consequently staff their stand with members of their UK based graduate recruitment teams and not their lateral hires recruitment teams. However, this fair is still a great opportunity to engage with these firms and to find out about them in more detail and possibly to discover the key contacts you would need to approach if you are considering working at an “experi-enced hire” level in a firm.

TOP TIPS

• Dress smartly – but you don’t have to wear a suit• Plan whom you want to see, but then expand and widen your contacts• Prepare some questions, and enter discussion• Take a breather between conversa-tions• Bring pen and paper to make notes after each discussion - including the names of anyone you speak to• Don’t just pick up brochures and freebies!

The General Council of the Bar, known as the Bar Council, was founded in 1894 and is the governing body for barristers in England and Wales. Its role is to promote and improve the services and functions of the Bar, and to represent the interests of the Bar on all matters relating to the pro-fession, whether trade union, disciplinary, public interest or in any way affecting the administration of justice.

Every prospective barrister in England and Wales must join one of the four Inns of Court. The Inns provide scholarships, edu-cational and collegiate opportunities and continuing professional development.

Representatives will be on hand to provide prospective barristers from any academic discipline with helpful information on pathways into the profession and careers at the Bar.

TYPE OF WORK HANDLED: Much of what we do is concerned with the rela-tionship between business and govern-ment, with, for example, a commercial party looking to challenge the exercise of state power. Very often that challenge will have a European law element.

We are also dealing with a growing number of cases concerning human rights, often in a commercial context. Our work provides scope for both specialisation and variety. Whatever the case, our work is intellectu-ally challenging and rewarding. As a result, members of Chambers can expect to receive a diet of high quality instructions from their early days of practice. As a pu-pil and then as a junior tenant, you would be working on some of the leading cases in the domestic courts and European Court of Justice, and, to an increasing extent, the European Court of Human Rights.

The LAPG is an independent membership organisation representing firms and agen-cies that carry out legal aid work.

If you want to know more about criminal, family, immigration, housing, community care, mental health, education, employ-ment, welfare benefits, debt, personal injury, clinical negligence or prison law come and talk to LAPG. How will the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offend-ers Act affect legal aid firms and not-for-profit organisations?

LAPG can advise about what work in legal aid practice entails, how it differs from commercial practice and the different ways in which legal aid practices find trainees. Students will find out what employers will be looking for in them and what they should be looking for in an employer.
