Welcome

It looks like a busy few weeks aheadin the community, starting with theMTB mountain bike event onSaturday (31st). Apparently a fewmore volunteers are needed - so if youhave a few hours available to helpraise funds for the playing field pleasesee page 29 for details. The post-eventBBQ and drink at the Druid is worthit alone!

The Garden Show is still open forentries too - so still time to preparefor the big event on the 7thSeptember (see centre pages). Thatday also sees the Classic Car Rallyonce again set off from the Druid, soanother busy weekend.

The Tour of Britain cycle race shouldbe quite a spectacle too on the 18th of

September, with Bradley Wigginsamongst the stars competing in theevent when it whizzes through thevillage, there’ll be good viewingopportunities at the Druid andLoggerheads.

There’s whist back on the cards(sorry) and we’ve got to mention afine season for Maeshafn CricketClub coming to a conclusion, so itshould be an exciting month ahead!

Best wishesPaul & Siobhan

This is the third running of the event and once again itis being organised by local man Guy Woodcock and hewill be assisted by experienced officials from Clwyd ValeMotor Club.

The Druid Inn, Llanferres, willbecome the focal point for theevent where 75 cars and theircrews will assemble beforemaking their way around our local highways and byways.

Being a daylight Historic event it is primarily aimed at the older, classic cars that we all remember from our youth and the likes oflong forgotten names such as a 1955 Austin A90, 1966 HillmanImp and a 1959 Triumph TR3A, will be touring round the locallanes trying to maintain a low average speed whilst keeping onthe correct route.

Also during the day the cars will be attempting special tests on private land where thedrivers will be let off the leash and they can stretch the legs of their pride and joy! In factthe very first test will be in the LoggerheadsCountry Park where these classics willattempt a short test in the car park.

The first cars are scheduled to leave theDruid Inn at minute intervals from 8:30amand should be starting the Loggerheads testshortly afterwards. So keep a look out forthese cars and marvel at the love anddevotion that their owners bestow on themto keep these classics alive. Cars thenreturn to the Druid, after their day’sendeavours, from 16:45 onwards forresults and prize giving.

Charlie Williams, one of six children ofWilliam and Sarah Ellen Williams ofSawmill Cottage Loggerheads was born inLlanferres in 1899, having an older and ayounger sister, two older and one youngerbrother. His father was a gardener anddomestic worker, his mother originallyfrom Llangollen.

Charlie attended Llanferres school and hislater occupation is listed as “footman”

He enlisted in Wrexham, the home of theRWF, on the 17th of November 1916 (his19th birthday) and joined the 16th ServiceBattalion, part of the New Armies, which

embarked for France in early December1915, along with the 13th ,14th and 15th

Battalions as part of 113th Brigade, 38th

Division.

Charlie first undertook his basic training atKinmel Park until the end of February1916 and was posted to his unit on the 17th

March, leaving from Folkestone on the SSQueen (later sunk 28th June 1918) on the18th and arriving at Etaples on the 19th.More instruction at the infamous“bullring” renowned for its rigorous

training and iron discipline would havetaken place, finally joining his unit in thefield on April 1st.

The service battalion would have beenprimarily engaged in excavation andentrenching work, often under verydifficult and dangerous conditions.

The 38th Division had moved from theGivenchy - Laventie area on June 10th, andthen marched south to the neighbourhoodof St.Pol where they underwent a shorttraining course, arriving in the battle areaon July 4th. The service battalions, including the 16th, arrived 2 days later

"tired and footsore" after a week's march, their arrival observed by no less than thewar poet Siegfried Sassoon who describedthem as "mostly undersized men" (Charliewas 5'3") and "half trained civilians" - butsoon to become spearhead troops.

The battle of the Somme had started 4 daysearlier and the village of Mametz taken onthe first day, the wood itself being the nextkey objective.

The 113th Brigade took over the linebetween Marlborough Wood and Cliff

Trench to the south of the wood, andinformation of what was in front of themcirculated, Mametz Wood being "verydense, with thick undergrowth" and"movement for infantry not easy" - nothelped by heavy shelling having uprootedtrees.

Operational orders were issued late on the6th of July, the first attack to be undertakenby 17th Division at 2.00am next morning, which failed. At 8.30am the attack wasrenewed and the 16th battalion alongsidethe 11th South West Borderers "were met

by machine-gun fire, which stopped thembefore they reached the edge of the wood"

A second attempt was made at 11.00amwith a similar result, a 3rd attempt orderedfor 4.30pm cancelled due to the sodden ground(heavy rain all day) and the difficult downhillapproach to the wood. Communication was bad;all the telephone wires had been cut and repairsslow under the conditions, and the artilleryinaccurate.

Over the next 4 days the wood was pounded withartillery, trench mortars and machine gun fire, butall efforts to dislodge the defenders, including thecrack Lehr Regiment, failed with attacks barelypenetrating the edge of the wood.

Yet another attack was planned for the 11th to beled by the 16th battalion in 8 waves from behindWhite trench, immediately behind them the 14thin four lines, the 15th and 13th behind them, in

the entertainingly named Bunny Trench andFritz Trench.

The attack was fixed for 4.15am and beforegoing into action, and after Welsh hymns, the16th battalion commander Lieutenant - ColonelCarden addressed his troops thus; "Boys, makeyour peace with God. You are going to take thatposition and some of you won't come back - butwe are going to take it"

Charlie Williams was to become one whowouldn't come back - one of the 64 missing, presumed killed, out of 300 casualties, which

also included Carden himself who advancedwith a brightly coloured handkerchief on hisswagger stick to show where he was to histroops. He was shot down, rose again, and led hismen to the very edge of the wood where he wasshot again and killed.

The specifics of Charlie's death are unknown, hisbody was either never recovered or notidentified. Very rarely were the details ofindividual deaths, even when known, recordedbelow the rank of 2nd lieutenant. Statistically, itis likely he was killed by shell-fire (70% of allWW1 casualties were thus) and quite possiblyfrom a British battery; his body never latterlyidentified, or even found, and he iscommemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to theMissing of the Somme - the largest memorial onthe Western Front, bearing 72,191 names. Hewas in France less than 4 months.

The wood was not cleared until the followingday after fierce hand to hand fighting, and further

deaths were suffered during the week-longmopping-up operations.

The devastation wrought on the 38th Divisionwas such that they effectively did not fight againin action for over a year.

Charlie was posthumously awarded the Victorymedal and the British War medal. He is alsocommemorated on his parents' grave inLlanferres churchyard, although the date of hisdeath unfortunately incorrectly recorded.

What a season we have had this year.As I write this we are third in the leaguewith 3 games to go. There is thepossibility that if results go our way wewill be promoted into the next division, which would be the best finish we havehad in 4 seasons of league cricket. Wehave beaten Bersham, Llangollen,Castell Alun, Rhewl, Ruthin andDolgellau. We got slaughtered byBodedern but our other losses toCorwen and Bethesda have been veryclose.

Our batsmen have batted well thisyear, our bowlers have bowled well. The wicketkeeper, Steve Pugh, is stillvery much the same. Members ofLAMBS will be pleased to note thatwhen we played Llangollen Mr Pughmanaged to get there in one piece anddid not end up in Chirk.

It has not been the best season inNorth Wales for cricket - a number ofteams have struggled to get thenumbers together in order to run theirteams. Rhewl, who have a couple oflocal Llanferres lads playing for them(the Carneys), lost their 1st team afterfailing to attract enough players tocompete at a fairly high level. Shottonfolded their 2nd team. Castell Alun andLlangollen have both struggled to fulfiltheir fixtures.

Maeshafn have seen a boom innumbers. We have managed to get 11players out every week (no matchescancelled this year so far for theweather) although this has included adebut for Jason Pugh, aged 13 atBodedern.

The league are planning to change theset up a little bit and we may findourselves in a North East league ratherthan a North Wales league. Some ofour players are quite keen on this -exciting away trips will include a trip toHalkyn or Ruthin rather than Bodedern(near Holyhead) or Pwllheli.

Quite a few of our players enjoy thecamping opportunities with the familythat these games throw up oralternatively the 'fun bus' - a car loadedwith beer driven by a fairlyunenthusiastic volunteer, pausing atvarious hostelries on the way homeplus a curry house. On the other hand,we rarely win games on our travels tothe West. Partly because of the fun bus, partly because some of our players donot like travelling so far and refuse toplay (particularly anyone travelling withSteve Pugh who drives like a maniac),and partly because there are some verygood cricketers on Anglesey!

Although we have lost our talismanicformer skipper Dave Williams to his

sheds, old age and DIY, Aled Jones,Steve Pugh, Tom Hall, DominicKearney, Jason Pugh, Pete Gresty(formerly of Llanferres) and myself stillretain the connection to Maeshafn.Rhun Jones has not played for a fewyears and was last seen by a couple ofvillagers armed with a shotgun andcarrying a couple of grouse he hadbagged on Nercwys Mountain. He hastaken the role of hunter/gatherer veryseriously.

Season awards are likely to be fairlypredictable, with Vice Captain Tom Hallodds on favourite to win the covetedWally (slightly toned down for familyreading) of the Season Award forgetting married on a Saturday inAugust.

Winter nets will start in the winter (!) -they are likely to be on a Friday nightat the Argoed School in Mynydd Isa. Ifyou fancy playing for either ourfriendly side or league team it is a goodtime to come along and have a bat andbowl. Email me at [email protected] to be kept updated ondates and times etc..

Summer has beenglorious so far and itlooks as if there will bebumper hay and fruitharvests this year.

Sadly the County’sHighways department

have been a little over enthusiastic this yearand they cut many of our grass verges far tooearly in the season. Last year they came in fora lot of criticism because they left it untilSeptember by which time many of our verynarrow lanes were impassible. The processshould ideally start just before the end of Julywhen most wild flowers have seeded but theTrunk Roads and all junctions should be cutearlier to ensure road safety.

I have an apology to make in relation to theLDP. As the new member for our ward onDenbighshire County Council I was led tobelieve that the only parcels of land to beincluded in the new LDP were in the village ofLlanarmon Yn Ial.It has come as a great surprise to not onlymyself but also to the Llanferres CommunityCouncil to find that land behind theproperties on the right as you enter the villagefrom Mold was passed as part of the LDP backin 2010/11.

Under the new LDP future Barn Conversionscan also only be used for affordable housingwhich I must admit I do not understand asmost barns are expensive to convert and arenormally well away from bus routes andvillage centres where most first time buyerswant to live. There is also provision for a smallamount of building in hamlets such asMaeshafn, Loggerheads and Tafarn Y Gelynbut again this is restricted to affordablehousing.

There is a lot going on this year in our wardwith events such as the ETAPE road race overthe Horseshoe Pass and around the lanes atLlandegla on the 8th September. The WelshMotor Rally with stages in the Forest atLlandegla for which the date has yet to beconfirmed and the Tour of Britain which willpass through Loggerheads and Llanferres on

the 18th September. All of these will bespectator events and should help to supportour local economy.

Fracking has become the latest concern whenit comes to finding ways to overcome ourenergy supply problems. I understand thatbefore any one can start exploring for thesereserves, they have to be granted a licence. Todate no such licences have been granted forthe Denbighshire area and even if they weregranted, the applicants would then have to gothrough the rigorous planning process.

Although parts of the Clwydian Range aremade up of shale deposits, it is also part of thedesignated Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty and I do not therefore believe that wewill see any of this type of activity in our area.Sadly whatever type of energy resource welook to in the future there will be a price to payeither on the landscape, in the risks associatedwith its extraction in the case of gas and oil orin the safety aspects of Nuclear power.

Many of you are aware of the plans currentlybeing considered in the planning process forextensive play areas to be constructed in theForest at Moel Famau by Natural ResourcesWales (the old Forestry Commission) which isnow a part of Welsh Government. There will bean impact on the roads in the area if theyachieve the increase in visitor numbers theyare anticipating. With this in mind I would liketo hear from residents in the area and I hopeto visit many of you over the next few weeks.

Finally in Denbighshire we are alreadyplanning for next year’s budgets and althoughWales did not come off badly in the recentlyannounced spending cuts by CentralGovernment, the signals coming out of theWelsh Government are not good. We could befacing cuts to our budgets from the minimum2% announced by the Chancellor up to 6%which we feel is the worst case scenario.Anything in excess of 2% would mean cuts toservices or higher than normal increases incouncil tax.

Watch this space.Best Wishes.

Martyn

You’re probably aware by now that the Tour of Britain will be travelling throughLoggerheads and Llanferres on Wednesday 18th September. The estimated timeof arrival in Llanferres is around 1.15pm, so bear that in mind if you’re travelling! It should be a spectacular site as they whiz by on their way to Llanberis on the188km (117 mile) fourth leg of the Tour.

Gardeners will have noticed the largenumber of white butterflies in theirgardens this year and will, no doubt, have been concerned about thesurvival of their cabbages and otherbrassicae such as cauliflower, kale, sprouts, broccoli etc. And with goodreason. But it is important to realisethat there are three species and todifferentiate between them. Thebiggest pest is the Large white(Pierisbrassicae) followed by the Smallwhite(Pieris rapes) and then there isthe Green-veined white(Pieris napi)which confines its feeding to wildbrassicae and is, therefore, not athreat to gardeners - in fact it is anallay as it eats many plants which areregarded as weeds.Distinguishing between the species isnot difficult as the Large white iseasily recognised by its size. TheSmall white is similar but, obviously, much smaller and the Green-veined,which is about the same size as theSmall white, has prominent greenmarkings, which resemble veins, onthe underside of the rear wings. The Large white is the mostnumerous with two, and occasionallythree, broods each year. The firstemerge from overwintered pupaearound May and lay eggs whichproduce the brood currently flying.Although May was cool and wet thebeginning of June was hot and sunnyand it is possible that thesebutterflies had good breeding successbut I suspect that the large numberspresently flying are due tocontinental migrants. This happensmost years, but occasionally theyarrive in prodigious numbers. In1911 there were reports of fields inthe south-east being white with them

and 2009 also had a big influx. TheSmall white flies at about the sametime but does not usually have manycontinental migrants. The Green-veined white has a shorter seasononly emerging in late April andusually disappearing by the end ofAugust. The Large white is the biggest pestand a single female can lay up to 600eggs, developing into large black andyellow caterpillars which, unfortunately, are distasteful tobirds and other predators. However,on the positive side, they areparticularly vulnerable to a parasiticichneumon fly Apanteles glomeratus, which injects its eggs into the youngcaterpillar where the fly larvae feedon the insides of their host, avoidingthe vital organs, until the caterpillaris fully grown when they kill it andbreak out to pupate in yellow cocoons. It is estimated that this parasite kills80% of the Large white caterpillars. The Small white is not as fecund as itslarger cousin and its greencaterpillars are eaten by birds andtend to inhabit the more central partsof the plant. It is also parasitized bythe ichneumon fly so, overall, is notusually as bad a pest.People have commented on the largenumber of 'Chacking' Jackdaws whichsweep in of an evening to their nighttime roosts, in the trees adjacent tothe Church. There does seem to bemore this year than usual perhapsindicating a good breeding season. One can already discern a diminutionin the numbers and it is a soberingthought that by the start of nextyear's breeding season most of themwill be dead, from disease, starvation, cold or old age, and numbers will be

Nature Notesback, more or less, to what they wereearly this year. Records indicate that30-40% of young Jackdaws die in thefirst year and that survival insubsequent years is only marginallybetter.A study into Song thrushes, carriedout in 2004, showed that 2% of chicksdie each day immediately afterleaving the nest. "By the time theyreach adulthood the mortality ratewill have decreased to about one birdin every hundred dying each week. Thus, most Thrushes (and otherbirds) that hatch will live for only afew months; only about 20% willsurvive to breed". It is thought thatthis example will be broadly typicalfor most song birds (believe it or not,Jackdaws are considered to be 'song

birds'). In this way the populationremains roughly consistent from oneyear to the next, unless there aremitigating circumstances to upset thebalance.
