Welcome

If May was a quiet month, then Junelooks positively frenetic bycomparison, with a whole host ofthings going on.

The Diamond Jubilee is a focus formany of these, and the reason behindthe front cover picture this month, which is made up of photographsfrom the Golden Jubilee event inLlanferres. It’s hard to believe it’s 10years since the last Jubilee party, andnone of us has aged a bit!

If the planned party in the village on3rd June is anything like that last oneit’ll definitely be one not to miss! There’s plenty of other events in thearea associated with the Jubilee,

including the Jubilee Beacon lightingon Moel Famau on Monday 4th.

There’s live music at the Miners onthe 4th too. There’s a lot more in themonth, from Attic Sales to SingingGroups to Parish Picnics and HerbDays, and don’t forget the School Fairat the end of the month.

Have fun!

New RectoryDo you think Adrian and Diane have been in their new home for a year?Well, they moved in on 26th May last year!I know they had a few teething problems with lights and telephone/computerconnection initially but I believe they have settled in well.Adrian came to our house quite a few times after they moved in to use mycomputer for emails. He has said since that it made him realise that we canmanage better than we realise without instant communication.

Gwen RogersGwen is the oldest member of our congregation, though our organist, GwenEdwards, keeps telling us that she is not much younger. Gwen has kept verygood health until recently but her son, Tim (you may know Tim Rogers fromthe days when he was on ITV delivering news from the North), realised she wasunwell when he was spending a few days with her. After a short spell inhospital Gwen is recovering well and sends her thanks for everyone's help andkind messages of good will.

Ray RobinsonSadly Ray Robinson has died unexpectedly of a heart attack whilst in hospitalreceiving treatment for cancer. He will be sadly missed by his son, brother,Ada and many other local family and friends. I remember Ray during the timehe was, amongst others, very kind to Grace Hobson (another of our elderlyorganists) who lived next door until aged over 100. Ray used to cook for herand I'm told even made a hole in the hedge so that he didn't have to keep goingdown his steep steps and up those next door!Ray's funeral was at St Berres at 2.00 pm on Thursday 24th May.

WeddingOn a happier note, two Weddings were booked in for May, only one of whichhas been celebrated as I write. This was the marriage between Iain Robertson and Fiona McCreddin whocome from Nottingham, but the Bride used to live in Cadole and still has familythere. They were lucky to have a sunny and pleasant afternoon. The next is on 26th May.

Easter - thanks from Gay HeadleyThanks to all who generously donated cash and/or flower arranging skills toprepare our glorious Easter decorations.Special thanks once again to Mrs Joan Almond for her talents and to PriceJones for providing amazingly good value long-lasting flowers. (They deservethe plug!)

Parish Picnic for familiesA social event for the 5 Parishes in the Bro Famau group will take place onRhydymwyn 'Donkey' field by the cricket pavilion at noon on Saturday 23rdJune. Bring your own food and drink and have fun entering a treasure huntand other activities. There will be display boards giving information abouteach Parish and it will be an opportunity to meet people from other parishes.

Christian Aid CollectionVery many thanks to those who collected for this worthwhile cause and tothose who gave so generously. The weather wasn't too bad for doing thecollections, I'm pleased to say. The total collected in Llanferres and Maeshafnwas £413 and this amount will be combined with money raised from a coffeemorning in Gwernaffield."

Coronation chicken was first served as part of the Queen’s coronation banquet and hasendured and indeed continued to gain popularity ever since. This recipe has a CAFFIFLORENCE twist with some chunky fruit rather than a smooth sauce. It can of course beserved using cold roast chicken rather than specially prepared as in this recipe.

4 chicken breasts1 onion, sliced3 whole peeled garlic cloves1 tsp sea salt, 10 whole black peppercorns

For the sauce1 tbsp olive oil1 onion1 tbsp curry powder1 tbsp tomato purée75g dried apricots chopped finely75g sultanas1 cooking apple, peeled, cored and chopped85ml white wine150ml water or stock1 bay leafsalt and freshly ground black peppersqueeze of lemon juice350ml good-quality mayonnaise2 tbsp crème fraiche

MethodPlace the chicken in a saucepan with a tightly fitting lid, cover with water and add theonion, garlic, salt and peppercorns.Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes &leave to cool completely. To make sauce heat the oil in a pan.Add chopped onion and cook gently for 3-4 minutes. Add the curry powder and cook fora further two minutes, stirring well. Add the apricots, sultanas, apple, tomato purée, wine, water and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to the boil & reduce to a simmer & cook uncov-ered, for about 10 minutes until fruit has soften. Set aside to cool.Gradually fold in the mayonnaise, crème fraiche and season with salt, pepper & lemonjuice. To serve, arrange the portioned chicken on a large platter, pour the sauce over the topand serve immediately with rice & a green salad.

Sunday 22nd April was theGareth Coppack tournament atDeeside Leisure Centre. Thistournament is open to all under15 teams who play in the NorthEast Wales Junior BadmintonLeague. Llanferres entered an Aand B team in the competition. They both played really well, both making it through to thequarter final rounds.

The B team had a very unlucky draw, coming up against the current bestteam in the league, Mold A.The A team also had tough matchesagainst Flint A , losing out by only onepoint to get to the semi-finals.Well done to everyone who took partand thank you to the parents whohelped with lifts and managing teams. Also, each year an award is given toone player from the league for fair

play. After each junior league match, teams vote for their favourite playerfrom the opposing teams, and thesevotes are counted up at the end ofthe season. Llanferres have won thisaward quite a few times now, andwe didn't disappoint. This year thesports personality award was givento Declan Bonar.Well done to all players who havetaken part in the junior league thisseason and a big thank you to theparents who have helped with lifts .Thanks,Moira

Gardening Club newsLlanferres Parish Gardening Club

The meeting held on Monday May 14th had quite a business ethic to start. Our new Treasurer, Mr Tony McKinstry, is now in place, so he had produceda balance sheet to cover the period from our AGM in November 2011. Stilla healthy balance!

Mrs Glenys Roberts is to be offered an Honorary Membership in recognitionof the support she gave to her late husband, the past Treasurer of the club, and also her hard work particularly for our Annual Show.

Show Secretary, David Jones, confirmed final details for our schedule andalso three new judges.

Our guest speaker was Gareth Jones - farm manager of the Rhug Estate. In his talk "Organic Growing" Mr Jones described a different aspect thanmost gardeners recognise. Explaining his career at the Rhug Estate andhow since 1998 the organic system had been introduced and developed. Nosprays or fertilizers are used - only natural cropping. With white cloversown and cropped for five years, red clover two-three years, both grown tofix nitrogen in the soil. Then two years of speciality cereal triticale - tallergrowing to smother weeds - together with oats and stubble turnips (allgrown to provide food for the animals) thus 5-7 years of rotation is achieved. There are also chickens, turkeys and geese to add to the diversification atthe Rhug Estate in the three farms of Lord Newborough’s enterprise.Questions and discussion with Mr Jones followed, which showed ourmembers' general curiosity and interest.

Our next meeting will be on Monday June 11th when David Shiel, seniorRanger of the AONB, will give a talk entitled "Moel Findeg". As always, visitors are welcome - entrance fee £1.

Hi! I’m Jennie.

I’ve just moved into Ruthin from EastYorkshire. I’m a singing and pianoteacher and I would really love tostart an informal singing group.

Come if you think you can’t sing, come ifyou love singing, come if you’re just curious, come if you love cake ~ you might just findyourself singing!

On May 9th we visited "Plas Newydd" in Llangollen and were given ashort talk on the history of the two ladies who had lived there, followedby a tour of the house.

It was so interesting to see how they had lived after fleeing from Ireland, and how they transformed the house with all its wonderful carvings.

Many thanks to Betty for making all the arrangements.

I would like to thank every one whoturned out to vote in the recent localelections. The turn out in theLlanarmon Yn Ial/Llandegla wardwhich includes Llanferres andMaeshafn was one of the highest in thecounty at 54% compared to manywhere the turn out was below 20%. Ihave no doubt that all the candidateswould like me to thank everyone fortaking an interest in these importantelections.

On a personal note I would like tothank those of you who put yourconfidence in me by electing me torepresent you all on DenbighshireCounty Council. I appreciate for manyof you this was a personal vote ratherthan a political one which makes iteven more important to me as anindividual.

Now the hard work begins.

I have already attended my first councilmeetings and training sessions wherewe have covered everything from theCode of Conduct, Planning and how touse new technology.

Denbighshire County Council arelooking to be one of the first councilsto become paperless and to this end allcouncillors have been given I-Padsthrough which we can receive andsend not only e-mails but alsoAgendas and Minutes of all meetings.

These I-Padsalso takepictures and soif you see mestanding in themiddle of aroad holdingwhat looks likea book in frontof me I will onlybe taking apicture of a local pot hole!! It isestimated that this will save £25,000 ayear on paper alone and even more onpostage.

The Council has now elected its Leaderand Cabinet and also appointed thisyears Chair and deputy chair.Next week I will hear whichcommittees I will be sitting on.

On a final note I would like to thankour outgoing County Councillor DrChris for all her hard work over the lastfour years and to say that I may not beas colourful as Christine but that I dointend to work as hard as she has forall our villages and communities.

Thank you.Martyn L Holland.

This seems to be the year forRedpolls. A local residenttelephoned to say he had a mixedflock of about forty Redpolls andSiskins in his garden and at thesame time we had both species inour garden feeding at the seed ornut basket and bathing in the pond. But which race? There are at leastfive possibilities. Lesser, Mealy,Greater (or Greenland) and Arcticredpoll. The most likely is theLesser redpoll as that is the residentBritish race. Mealy redpolls are aContinental species which come toBritain in some winters but usuallystay on the east coast but dosometimes spread across to the westwhile the other two, from northernScandinavia or Greenland are rarevagrants but can turn up at times. As they all have somewhat variableplumage it is very difficult toseparate them. For those who do not know thesebirds, they are like a small femaleHouse sparrow with tit-likebehaviour, a pink forehead, a smallblack bib and a yellow beak. Themales sometimes have a pink flushto the breast. All species have thesefeatures except the juveniles whichhave no pink. A resident ofMaeshafn telephoned to say that hehad an Arctic redpoll in his garden, which would be unusual but notimpossible.Among the ones bathing in ourgarden pond was one with a yellowforehead. I have consulted all mybooks and looked on the Internetbut I cannot find any reference to ayellow forehead so I must assume itto be just an aberration.

Redpolls used to be a quite commonspecies, feeding on the seeds ofbirch and alder, especially nearwater, but from the 1950s they wentinto a steep decline and becamerather rare. However, in morerecent times they seem to havemade something of a comeback andnumbers have increased again. This spring(?) has been unusual forbirds. As I write, (16th May)Siskins are still coming to thegarden whereas normally they havedispersed to their breeding areasand Bramblings are still hereinstead of being back in northernEurope. Swallows and Housemartins arrived but then many ofthem seemed to disappear again andthere are not that many about. Nodoubt a little warm weather willhave them back. Conversely, somesummer migrants like Chiffchaffs,Willow warblers and Blackcaps arehere in good numbers and singinglustily. I heard my first Cuckoo andsaw my first Redstart on the 12thMay.It was also pleasing to hear the loudlaughing call of a Green woodpeckerhere in Llanferres. Unlike thecommon Great-spotted woodpecker, this species seldom 'drums' on treesbut makes its presence known witha loud, laughing call sometimesdescribed as a 'yaffle'. Very wellcamouflaged amongst the trees, they can sometimes be seen on theground hunting ants, theirfavourite food.
