Our guest speaker in May was Kevin Pratt with his topic "The BulbYear". Explaining his fascination with bulbs from early childhood, MrPratt now grows over 10,000 bulbs in his garden 30ft X 30ft. As bulbsare planted at different depths and flower in different seasons this isintensive growing. In an excellent range of slides starting with snow-drops and finishing with a range of hardy cyclamen, Mr Pratt's greatestpassion is the range of over 50 species of fritillarias of which, perhaps, 10- 12 species were particularly special. After his talk members are morethan eager to tackle growing more than daffodils and tulips.

SHOW UPDATE:- If anyone is wanting to have a stall at the ANNUALSHOW ON 5th SEPTEMBER please contact either the Show Secretaryor myself.

The next meeting will be on Monday June 8th when Anthony Normanwill give an illustrated talk entitled "Climbers".

Annual Subscription is still only £4 and visitors pay £1 per meeting and,as usual, are most welcome.

On Saturday June 13th, 10am to 4pm, as part of Denbighshire Country-side Biodiversity week, those members who are helping create a wildlifegarden at Loggerheads Country Park will be on hand to talk about, andperhaps help to encourage, a wildlife haven in your garden.Hon Show Secretary Hon SecretaryDavid Jones Mrs Joan AlmondÉ 01352 810511 É 01352 810808

Monthly Recipe from CAFFI FLORENCEBlackcurrant jam

We will soon be into soft fruit season and so we thought we wouldshare our recipe for the delicious blackcurrant jam we make to servewith scones. Making jam is easy and if you haven't done it beforeblackcurrant is good to start with as it sets well.

Ingredients600 grams of fresh or drained blackcurrants400 grams of granulated sugar100 ml water.

MethodAdd the blackcurrants to the pan with the water and simmer gentlyuntil soft. Add sugar and heat gently until dissolved. Boil rapidly untilsetting point is reached. Remove scum and jar.

Testing for setThe easiest way to test for setting is using a sugar thermometer.Setting point is reached at 105C or 220F assuming sufficient sugar andpectin are present. If you don't have a thermometer, it is possible to test using the saucermethod. This involves putting a saucer into the fridge before you startmaking the jam. When you think you may have reached setting pointadd a small blob of jam onto the saucer and leave to cool slightly. Ifsetting point has been reached, wrinkles will appear as you run yourfinger through the jam.

Preparing JarsClean jars are essential to prevent bacterial growth during storage.Jars should be washed and then stood upside down in a warm ovenset to 160C, 325F. This will sterilise the jars and ensure they are warmand don't crack as you add the hot jam or chutney. Jars should bewell filled, as there will be some shrinkage during cooling. If using wax disks place on top immediately and addcellophane once cool. If using screw top jars addimmediately.

Week 5:Saturday 29th November -Saturday 6th December.

Off to Maputo via Jo’burg. As Ihave a Diners card I could get intothe Premier lounge and had myfirst hot shower for 8 days- brilliantI felt clean at last. I love Jo'burgairport they have a smokers loungewith a bar and TV and it is civi-lised. Christopher lost his luggageby the time we arrived in Maputo. The examining team from Kenyawith were held up with aeroplaneproblems in Lilongwe. They werethe main exam organisers, so thenext day I set off with Dr Mapasseto sort out the patients for theMembership exam.

The amount of rubbish in thestreets was awful and the beggingtroublesome but otherwise the ho-tel was fine - 3 star, clean and agood breakfast. The whole weekwas good, the exams ran well, most-ly, but I was not happy about theformat. We had sterling help fromKirsty Muir from the EdinburghCollege, Margaret Bean ex of thecollege to help with the organiza-tion. Ruth, my daughter, arrivedon the Sunday for the week andwent off on safari to Kruger park, just over the border in South Africawith 2 Canadian orthopaedic sur-geons who had come to help with

the orthopaedic workshop and theFellowship exams in orthopaedics.I ran my usual Train the Examin-ers meeting, the standard is notbad but there are still too manysurgeons who like to hear their ownvoices. The Membership exams hada good pass rate and at last we arebeing more particular about thestandard in the Fellowship exams.

A lovely end to the week – I got apresent from the COSECSA councilas they all knew I'm at last, retir-ing! Bless me if Professor JimmyJames didn't give a short citationfor me - I gave his when he got hisHonorary Fellowship of the Edin-burgh College 6 years ago, so allsquare. The only irritating note mylaptop was stolen from the hotelroom on the Wednesday after I hadfinished using it for the exams. Ispent an interesting 9 hours over 2days in Maputo police stations try-ing to get a report, so I can claim onmy insurance.

I returned home after an interest-ing 5 weeks. I felt that the troublesin Africa far out weigh anything wehave in the UK so the credit crunchand the closing of Woolworth’s hasleft me unmoved. I shall miss allinvolved with Urolink but feel Ihave done my best and I am happyto leave younger people like Jaiminto help out in future.

The singles gained theirrevenge in another thrill-ing (honest) match.

The first half was a veryclose encounter (of the0-0 kind), but thingswent downhill for themarried after that, assuperior fitness began totell. The final 6-1 scoreline to the singlesshowed their goal-scoring touch wasslightly better too.

Playing for the Singles team were TomHealy, Richard Hughes, JacArmstrong, Max Griffiths, AlCatherall and Gareth Jagaurd.

In the Married team were Rog-er Llywelyn, Barry Roberts,Simon Lovell, Gary Buckett,Paul Gothorp and Tom Hall‘guesting’ in goal. DannyLaFlamme also came on assubstitute as legs began totire, giving a valuable boost to theMarrieds.

Four goal hero Max Griffiths was Manof the Match with a superb display offinishing that the married’s defence

could only stand backand admire (mainly be-cause they werekna****ed).

The one goal scored bythe Marrieds camefrom Roger Llywelyn, finishing a superbteam effort.

On the singles team, Jac Armstrongnetted the 2 goals in addition to Max’sfour.

Sportsmanship prevailed in a matchwith no referee and there were nomajor injuries on this occasion either,as both teams managed to kick theball more than each other.

A deciding fixture is planned beforethe end of the summer when the 3match series will be won and lost.

Rumour has it, there has been at leastone hastily arranged divorce in thevillage since this match, the lengthssome other people will go to just to beon the winning team!

The Yummy WorldRivers made of chocolate sauce,

trees with yummy popcorn, the tree-trunks made of liquorice,

cakes in the shape of rocks!raining mini muffins,

paths made of sponge cakecoke cola fountains,

and gingerbread walls!if only our world was made of all this,

it would be great!

but with boring old water riversand same old leafy trees,

wooden tree trunks, and very hard rocks!raining cold water,

paths with mud, water fountainsand brick walls

our world is no fun at all! By Tarnia Grainger

It is good to discover that the cuckoois back in Llanferres. A lady tele-phoned me on 28th of April to say shehad heard one calling but it was notuntil the 12th of May that I heard itfor myself (although I had been awaythe previous week) and then it wasonly a single, but unmistakable, call.It is several years since I have heardone in Llanferres yet they frequentneighbouring areas so why they nor-mally shun ours is a mystery.

At this time of year some of our small-er lanes become lined in bridal whiteas the cow parsley comes into bloom. Here and there red campion, greatercelandine and herb Robert showthrough to make it look as though thelane has been scattered with confetti.

Cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris)rouses conflicting emotions amongstpeople - some (myself included) like tosee it as a harbinger of summer and avaluable source of nectar for insects, and others see it as an obnoxiousweed. Both points of view have legit-imacy. On a warm day in late May orearly June a stand of cow parsleymakes a brilliant sight and can humwith the sound of busy insects and theumbellate flowers can be liberallysprinkled with reddish-brown soldierbeetles. Its young leaves can be usedas a potherb or dried and used as aspicy seasoning for soups, stews oromelettes and the roots treated likeparsnips. A bright-green dye can beextracted from the leaves but it is notpermanent. It is known by some oth-

er names such as wild chervil, wildbeaked parsley, keck and QueenAnne's lace. It can be mistaken forhemlock and fool's parsley, both ofwhich are poisonous, so needs to betreated with caution although theyboth tend to flower a little later thancow parsley. It can be invasive, but itseldom spreads into neighbouringpasture fields as it is kept under con-trol by the young rosettes beinggrazed by rabbits, sheep or cattle. Itprefers disturbed soil but its seed isnot long lived, seldom surviving morethan one winter. However, in coun-tries where it is not native, but hasbeen introduced, such as Iceland andthe USA, it has become a considerablenuisance and proved difficult to con-trol.

What is the condition of our localRiver Alyn? Over the years thereseems to have been a falloff in thenumber of birds on the river. Dip-pers, pied wagtails and grey wagtailsare less common than they used to be.At one time I expected to see themevery time I went near the river butnow, although they are still there, Isee them much less frequently. Eventhe moorhens and mallards seem tobe down in numbers. The water looksclean but has the invertebrate lifereduced, making food less available tobirds, or is there some other cause?Or, perhaps I have just been unluckyin my sightings! What are other peo-ples impressions?
