Support Phamiles on Tour began with idea to represent new or beginning artists and musicians who diligently display their art out of the backs of their vehicles, off card tables or milk crates, on street corners or parking lots or even from the comforts of their living rooms for lack of a better showplace. Street art has always been prevalent in cities where main stream traffic is abundant, and gained a new approach with the followers of the infamous band the “Grateful Dead” who’s ongoing music tours helped to establish many creative young artists by providing them a venue to display and sell their wares, which came to be known as “Shakedown Street”. This traveling art circuit has evolved with an abundant list of music and art festivals and has transformed some of these creative Nomad’s and Gypsy’s from boxcars and buses into festival tents, and show rooms. Still, with so many artists deserving of recognition the LSF is proud to present a Featured Artist column for our newsletter and website. We welcome the true self-taught artists, seemingly unafraid of critique or prestige yet who have embraced and celebrate their sacred creativity as they travel on or off the tour of life. If you are interested in sharing your talent, and might like to be considered as one of our featured artists, or for more information on how to support this program please contact us at [email protected] Summer

In our attempt to support aspiring and brilliant local talent, the Living Sky Foundation has launched a new green-roots program entitled Support Phamilies on Tour or S.P.O.T. Support Phamiles on Tour began with idea to represent new or beginning artists and musicians who diligently display their art out of the backs of their vehicles, off card tables or milk crates, on street corners or parking lots or even from the comforts of their living rooms for lack of a better showplace. In celebration of Earth Day, as well as the 75th anniversary of the Shenandoah National Park, students from Hearthstone, Belle Meade and Rappahannock County Public Schools in Sperryville, Virginia united for a two-day collaboration to illustrate a new world pledge of allegiance. “Earth Allegiance” written by Cherl Crews, Founder of the Living Sky Foundation, evolved when the pledge of Allegiance had banned from morning announcements in public schools for containing the word God. Living Sky was inspired to create a pledge that would not offend any one system of beliefs, and that would unite all people of the planet in a common vision of love, honor, celebration and respect for all life on earth.

The mural went “straight to the top” of the mountain that is, where it was graciously received by over a thousand invited guests at it’s unveiling at the Shenandoah's National Parks, 75th Anniversary and Rededication Ceremony on June 25th, 2011. Superintendent Martha Bogle in her re- dedication speech recited “And now my friends,

in this year, 2011, we seek to pass on to our children a richer land and a stronger nation. Let us join together for the future as we have so well in the past. Let us renew the promise of preservation, and in it, the rich and boundless promise of Shenandoah. Let us all take pleasure in rededicating Shenandoah National Park for succeeding generations of Americans. For the recreation and for the re-creation which they shall find here.”

The Living Sky Foundation has donated the mural to the Shenandoah National Park at Skyline Drive, Virginia in anticipation of permanent placement in the park for all to enjoy. A portion of the proceeds generated from the sale of the poster will go to support the National Park Service. To purchase a two-sided, 12 x 18 “ color poster go to livingsky.org/projectpledge. If you are interested helping the foundation with the distributing the poster or to purchase in quantity, please contact cherlcrews.org. Each summer the Living Sky Foundation donates programing to a selected summer camp. This year we joined the team of the Virginia Cooperative Extension to work with students at the 4H Rappahannock County Summer Day Camp, under the direction of the wonderful, and amazingly energetic, Jenny Kapsa. Students enrolled in our workshop, “Become a Book Illustrator,” participated in the different stages of writing and illustrating a book that they titled “From Here to Here” a lesson in celebrating the many abilities and talents that comprise our individualism. Indeed and a good time was had by all. To find out more information on the 4H experience visit: www.4-h.ext.vt.edu/index.html

For our first Featured Artist we recognize the many talents of singer, songwriter, artist, painter and instructor, Monica “Monster Art” Newell. Though she has sometimes referred to her collection as “function art” or rather “funk-tion” art, it is no way a conventional label. Monica celebrates her passion through various mixed medias, primarily utilizing acrylic paint, collage, and photography. Ms. Monster Art breaths life into her many pieces with colorful (and sometimes B&W) inspiration from her dreams and visions. Monica’s newest studio the “White Owl Gallery of Fine Art and School for Young Artists” located at 38 Main Street, Sperryville, Virginia, provides a place for true freedom of expression. The Greener Side of Paper

Just  One  Tree...

With numerous available solutions for utilizing tree free products, WHY are we still cutting them down? Trees not only provide the earth with a pure source of oxygen, food from their nuts, seeds and fruit, medicine, filtration systems for our soil, protection from erosion, shade from the increasing solar flares and shelter for living creatures, not yet extinct, and they are truly a more valuable commodity left standing then we could ever imine. Preserving and protecting you planet can begin your own backyard. By saving just one tree, and you will discover the alternatives for a more sustainable, viable lifestyle.

Take  the  steps  that  reap  the  rewards  of  a  healthy,  joyous  lifetime  and  the  awakening  of

Our  true  potential

Going Paperless is a term that is becoming more familiar in your studio, home and office. Once you become aware to the benefits of paper free alternatives, your load will become a lighter one. There is and may always be a need for some paper consumption, but the options for tree free and recycled products is becoming readily available, and the choices, ever plentiful, are almost romantic. In our efforts to walk the talk, the green team at LSF did a lot of ground work before we set out to print, here are several things for you to keep in mind to keep on the greener side of life.

1. Tree Free is Best. Discover your favorite enviormnmtal friendly, sustainable crop such as, Bamboo, Kenef, Hemp, Sugar Cane, recycled textiles synthetic and the list goes on. Tree Free is best. Discover your favorite environmentally friendly, sustainable crop such as Bamboo, Kenef, Hemp, Sugar Cane, and Recycled Textiles…. the list goes on.

2. Forest Certifications. Despite forest certifications, an attractive logo that lets you know that your virgin wood pulp (pulp from freshly cut trees) is being harvested from well-managed forests. Traditional virgin, wood pulp consumes more then 12, 000 square miles of forest each year.

3. Recycled Content. Read the small print for the percentage of recycled content of both Pre- Consumer Waste and Post Consumer Waste. The consumer has used post consumer waste and is waste kept out of the landfills; Pre consumer waster is reclaimed paper from manufacturing sources. Though Post Consumer Waster (PCW) is keeping paper out of our landfills, both take energy and chemicals to put back into paper form.

4. Chlorine Free alternatives. Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) is paper bleached without the use of chlorine or any chlorinated compounds. Usually Hydrogen Peroxide is substituted for this most harmful of all dioxins. Elemental Chlorine Free is not to be confused with Chlorine Free as it has had a bleach product used in it’s manufacturing.

Only demand will make our efforts to use green papers more affordable and available. Do the research, and find a source of a paper that will feel good to you to consume. And remember this goes for your household papers too like bathroom tissue and kitchen towels.
