summer brings one thought to everyonersquos mind Greeley Independence Stampede From June 26th to July 6th people from all over the nation and even some international spectators head to Greeley for the unforgettable event that brings our
western heritage into the spotlight once again
WINTER 2014-2015
Greeley Independence Stampede - June 26th-July 6th
In the late 1800rsquos neighbors gathered in Greeley to celebrate and honor the local potato farmers at a festi-val that later became known as the Greeley Spud Rodeo In 1922 the
newly named festival entertained around 2500 spectators with ldquobucking bronc riding fancy roping a pie eating contest a horse race motorcycle and bicycle races and a two-mile Model-T Ford free for all racerdquo This wild western event was later named Go West with Greeley but in 1972 the com-munity of Greeley finally found the perfect name befitting their popular rodeo festival Still today the name has stuck and the in-ternationally recognized event is known as The Greeley Independence Stampede The festival has grown to attract over 250000 people each year with concerts rodeos a July 4th parade demolition derby western
art show old-fashioned carnival free en-tertainment longhorns and lots of delici-ous food The eleven-day event even has its own team of mascots Bucky and Bertha the Stampede Longhorns
This year the concert series includes Three Days Grace along with country headliners like Jake Owen Billy Currington Martina McBride and Big amp Rich with Cowboy Troy and Dallas Smith The PRCA Pro Rodeo starts on Sunday June 29th and continues every night through Friday July 4th The ro-deo includes bareback riding saddle bronc riding team roping steer wrestling tie-down roping barrel racing mutton bustinrsquo and bull riding The kids rodeo gives our littlest cowboys and cowgirls a chance to show their skills at stick pony races mut-ton bustinrsquo barrel racing pole bending
goat tying and junior rough stock events A yearly favorite is the July 4th parade which has been named one of the largest Independence Day parades in the nation Catch the parade route between 19th and 15th street along the historic 10th Avenue Coming up on its 92nd year the parade is sure to impress In addition to the July 4th parade there is a daily parade at 600 PM throughout the entire Greeley Stampede The Demolition Derby on July 6th includes more than 100 drivers in a multi-heat der-by In a continued celebration of western heritage the Greeley Stampede has ho-sted the Stampede Western Invitational Art Exhibit and Sale for the past 14 years In that time the event has sold almost $1 mil-lion in art Part of the proceeds help with scholarship funding for Weld County high school students
AS WITH EVERY YEAR THE GREELEY INDEPENDENCE STAMPEDE IS SURE TO IMPRESS THE FAITHFUL MASSES OF SPECATORS PERFORMERS AND VOLUNTEERS THE STAMPEDErsquoS MISSION EVERY YEAR IS rdquoTO CELEBRATE OUR NATIONrsquoS INDEPENDENCE AND PRESERVE OUR WESTERN HERITAGErdquo AND TO THAT WE CAN ONLY SAY MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
