GO DUTCHHOLLAND IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY; THE NETHERLANDS IS AN

ESSENTIAL PART OF THE EUROPEAN EXPERIENCE.

Idealistic and industrious, cosmopolitan and tolerant, the Netherlands is miles ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to innovation, ecological solutions to first world problems and the general acceptance of lifestyle choices.

Scenery, art, history, culture, and cuisine puts this nation at the top of the must see list. Liberal Holland allows Amsterdam’s colourful café culture to flourish alongside The Hague’s International Criminal Court. It may be liberal but it’s never seedy, open mindedness cohabits comfortably with traditional values.

Revel in the picturesque cities and towns, see the unbelievably beautiful fields of flowers or take a trip back in time in one of the marvellous museums. The Netherlands encourages appreciation of the arts.

From the Great Masters of painting, sculpture and music to the students painting or singing in the town square, art is everywhere.

Glistening lakes, fairy tale castles, canals with colourful barges, windmills, tulips and narrow houses epitomise the traditions. The best ideas in technology and industry encompass the future. Check out some of the ideas in architecture. High-density city living has produced some exciting adventures in home designs. Rotterdam’s Cube Houses are just one of many amazing home designs.

Getting around, sightseeing and shopping is easy. The currency is the Euro and everyone speaks English. There is no snooty attitude about language as there is in some European countries, the people here are friendly.

Hotels, cafés and restaurants are spotlessly clean as are the streets and other public places. This country takes environmental responsibility seriously and it serves everyone very well.

The Netherlands borders Belgium to the south, Germany to the east and has the North Sea to its north and west.

The topography is low lying; some of the land was reclaimed from the sea. The country is protected by dikes and seawalls as about 20 percent of the land area is below sea level and more than half of it is no more than a metre high. This is why so many buildings have steps or ramps. Areas to the east and south in the foothills of the Ardennes are slightly higher.

Plan your trip to suit the seasons. Most people visit the Netherlands between April and September when the weather is warm and the days are long. The best time to see the bulb fields in bloom is between April and mid-May. Autumn and winter is likely to be quite cold, wet and windy.

Take a tip from the locals, wear or carry something warm and waterproof and get out in the fresh air. Walk, ride a bike or use the cheap and efficient public transport system. A car in the major towns and cities is more trouble than it’s worth. Take the locals’ advice about cabs; some companies are much better than others.

Be prepared to stand in line for service or entry to museums and other attractions.People come from all over the world to visit this exciting country. It’s fun to watch the passing parade even when the queue to see Ann Franks House has not moved much in three hours. It’s worth the wait.

The lifestyle focus is on health and fitness, bike riding, walking and lots of stairs means it’s hard to find a fat person. The food is fabulous and all that exercise means you can tuck into creamy coffee, rich sweet pastries and the best cheese in the world.

Local produce is the mainstay of most menus so the food is always fresh and tasty. Chefs are encouraged to be innovative as part of the culture of art and expression.

Markets sell every type of food one could imagine. Trying new tastes is part of the travel experience and the varied national cuisine of the Netherlands is almost always a palate pleaser.

THE NETHERLANDS BOASTS A ROBUST ECONOMY, A RICH ARTISTIC AND HISTORIC HERITAGE AND VERY PROGRESSIVE ATTITUDES ON ALMOST EVERYTHING.

Entertainment is often free, city nightlife is great and there are plenty of restaurants, theatres and other venues to explore. Boredom doesn’t exist in the multidimensional sensation that is the Netherlands.

Culture vultures will love the museums, see as many as you can. We chose our top five for people in a hurry. The Rijksmuseum recently reopened after major renovations, this national museum boasts one of the most important art collections in the world. The exhibition includes Rembrant’s The Night Watch plus works by Jan Vermeer and other masters of the Dutch Golden Age.

Anne Frank’s House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The house where Anne Frank and her family hid from the city’s Nazi occupiers is preserved as a museum dedicated to those who hid there and those who helped them.

The Van Gogh Museum shows almost every painting, sketch, print, etching and lots of enlightening correspondence items that Vincent van Gogh produced. Don’t miss Sunflowers, his most famous work. Stedelijk Museum represents all the significant art and design movements of the 20th and 21st centuries through its world-class collection.

Zaanse Schans i s an open -a i r conservation area and museum not far from Amsterdam. It offers an insight into Dutch industry during the 17th and 18th centuries with its traditional windmills and craft workshops.

The Netherlands is a great destination, there is so much to see and do. Unless you know a local who can take the time to show you around it is best to book a guided tour. The local tourism organisation is exceptionally helpful and informative. Visit www.holland.com and start planning.

Recent media reports show retirees and people planning retirement are concerned about fees in purpose built properties. These include independent living apartment blocks, aged care facilities, retirement villages and lifestyle resorts.

Living Gems Over 50s’ Lifestyle Resorts general manager Adrian Puljich says there is some confusion about the various types of retirement properties. “The properties, the level of care, facilities and costs vary enormously,” he says.

Adrian says people who need onsite care are in a different situation to people who are retired or planning retirement.

“Healthy and active retirees have more choice. Retirement villages offer accommodation and some social benefits. Retirement resorts generally offer a home and a range of communal facilities. Costs and commissions vary.”

Living Gems has special ised in designing, building and managing resorts since the early 1980s. The family owned and operated company now has eight resorts in South East Queensland and more on the drawing board.

Adrian says Living Gems gives people more for their money. “We give people a choice of locations and a range of architect designed villas to choose from but it is the lifestyle people enjoy most. Our resort facilities set a standard the rest of the industry attempts to follow.

“We offer an industry best fee guarantee. There are no entry fees, no exit fees or commissions. If people choose to sell at anytime they retain the sale price of their villa plus any capital gain,” he says.

An independent international group of over 50s’ housing experts recently voted Living Gems Lifestyle Resorts the Best in the World. Award judges visit projects

in more than 20 countries annually to compile reports for government departments and the industry.

Over 50s’ housing expert Esmonde Crawley is a member of the international awards judging panel. He says the Best in the World Award rewards excellence in enhancing the lifestyle of people aged 50 plus. “I am free of commercial links and able to make impartial judgments. Living Gems was chosen from a list of 780 candidates,” Mr Crawley says.

IT’S SOCIAL CENTRAL AT LIVING GEMS PACIFIC PARADISE AS SALES MANAGER VICTORIA DENT SETS THE SCENE FOR ONGOING FUN UNDER THE SUN AND UNDER THE STARS.

PACIFIC PARADISESALES MANAGER VICTORIA DENT

Victoria Dent has an excellent reputation as a local property expert and outstanding hostess. Before joining Living Gems, Victoria sold multi-million dollar properties in the Whitsundays and villas at the former Hyatt Resort at Coolum.

Many Living Gems Maleny homeowners regard Victoria in high esteem as she helped them make the move to the resort lifestyle. Now as sales manager at Living Gems Pacific Paradise, Victoria is setting sales records and hosting social events for the new resort community.

Victoria says the excitement surrounding Living Gems Pacific Paradise outshines all previous sales results and forecasts. “This resort has captured the attention of buyers from all over Queensland and interstate,” she says.

“This is Living Gems’ smallest resort but we have set a new benchmark in style, value and quality. The boutique community appeals to people who want the best of everything in an idyllic location.

“The resort is designed for people who are still in the workforce, running a business, those who are planning retirement and retirees who want to make the most of their leisure time. The location is a drawcard; people can stroll to the local shops or walk to the beach.

“Noosa and Caloundra are within a 30 minute drive and Brisbane can be reached in little more than an hour. Everything from shops to services

and medical facilities is nearby but outstanding resort facilities and a community based on fun and friendship is the key.”

Living Gems Pacific Paradise buyers are already enjoying an active social life. Victoria recently hosted a glamorous White Night cocktail party and lunch at the resort.

Victoria says the cocktail party was a huge success. “We all had fun, it’s great to get to know people, relax and enjoy good food with a few drinks. A river cruise is another planned highlight and there is plenty more to come. “The country club will soon be complete. We will have a coffee shop, dining areas and a bar. The grand ballroom will have a line up of events and I know we already have people in this community who can’t wait to get up on the stage.

“Residents and their guests have exclusive use of a magnificent swimming pool and spa. The pool pavilion and barbecue area is designed for relaxed entertaining and we will make the most of it,” Victoria says.

Living Gems Pacific Paradise offers a host of resort facilities including a covered and floodlit bowling green, tennis court, an indoor golf simulator and a gym.

Victoria says there will be time for quieter moments. “The landscaped grounds are ideal for walking the dog or enjoying a stroll, residents can browse in the library, take up arts and crafts or catch a movie in the private cinema,” she says. I have known my husband (my old man) for most of my life. We were childhood sweethearts, married young and had our children early. We have a happy marriage but I’m not saying there were no bumps in the road. There were many, mostly minor and usually rows about the kids. Realists know long-term relationships aren’t always as romantic as they were in the beginning. There is a wonderful paragraph in a Marian Keyes novel that sums it up. The character says something like ‘my parents will not be walking along a sun-kissed beach wearing white linen and holding hands.’ Most of us have seen the picture; most of us know our kids could have written it.

Time changes everything, those endearing little habits (the way he whistles through his teeth when he’s concentrating) are now the things that drive us mad. He has a go at me about jigging along to the radio while I am washing up. He swears my mother used to do it, I don’t think she did.

We are older, not necessarily wiser and certainly no more patient. The general rush of daily life has taken on a different pace. We are both retired and could be together 24 hours a day seven days a week. The energy has changed.

About two years ago, we moved to a retirement resort. It took a bit of a push to make the decision and sell the family home but it was the best move we ever made, apart from buying the family home in the first place.

THE WORKSHOP IS A BRAIN WAVE BY THE POWERS THAT BE AT LIVING GEMS RESORTS

A TRUE TALE FROM A LIVING GEMS HOME AND SHED OWNER WHO PREFERS NOT TO BE IDENTIFIED FOR REASONS THAT WILL BECOME OBVIOUS.

THE OLD MAN AND THE SHED

We had lived in the same house since 1978, back then it was a new estate and just about affordable. You would have seen plenty of houses like ours. Four bedrooms, a lounge and a rumpus room on a quarter acre block. It had one bathroom when we bought it but we added another one when the kids were growing up.

The house was nice but the repairs and maintenance had started to add up. The last few years had been difficult, I had a health problem, he was forced into early retirement. Money was a little too tight to mention. We sold the house – couldn’t believe how much we got for it – bought the new house and for the first time in our lives had a sizable nest egg.

When we started to talk about selling the old house my biggest wrench was the familiarity, his was the shed. He had always liked making things. He made the cot for our first-born and a few toys but since retiring, he had spent a lot of time in that shed and made nothing at all.

Most days his mate from down the road came over and they sat in the shed talking up a storm about everything under the sun. What those two don’t know about running the world isn’t worth mentioning. If Obama could have heard them would realise all those other wannabe presidents are a minor threat in comparison.

A man’s shed is an international phenomenon; it crosses the boundaries of countries, cultures and class. This is his

haven; he may have gardening stuff, bits and pieces of inventions that are never going anywhere, a train set or Scalextric. It doesn’t matter, keep out is the message.

It’s fine by me, I was busy in the old house, I’m busy having fun in this one. My days include going to the gym, (yes, me), the odd game of bowls and my arts and craft group. My friends and I talk sense, not a lot of rubbish about the international economy. The new shed has now replaced the old shed, it still smells like a new shed but it contains all the perceived wisdom of the old shed. He now has his old mate over and together with a bunch of new mates they set the world to rights.

Bigger and better than the shed is The Workshop, it deserves capital letters, it shows how important it is.The Workshop is a brain wave by the powers that be at Living Gems Resorts. I don’t know who thought of it but when I find out I will bake them a cake.

The Workshop is the centre of male bonding, a few women use the equipment but it’s mostly men who hang about sharing their wisdom (or lack of it as the case may be).

The difference here is they actually make things. Some men are more expert than others but they all work together while they natter on. They have a good time, I hear them laughing when I go past on my way to meet friends for coffee.

One of the old man’s friends has made a guitar. He isn’t adverse to playing a few cords and showing off his memories of hits from the ‘60s. The best thing is all the men go home happy. The wives are happy to have had time to themselves doing what they want to do without feeling guilty about doing it.

We are grateful for the shed but we love The Workshop.

WARM WELCOME AT OPAL BY LIVING GEMSROSS AND DOT SCHMITZER | OPAL BY LIVING GEMS

Ross and Dot Schmitzer were made very welcome when they moved into their new villa at Opal by Living Gems Logan Village recently. Dot says they are both delighted with their decision to make the move.

“We have been thinking about downsizing since we started renovating our home in Ormeau eight years ago.

“We went to an open day at another Living Gems resort but we wanted a more rural aspect. We heard about Opal at Logan Village, had a look and attended several open days. Ross won a lucky door prize at three events so we saw that as a sign.

“We fell in love with the resort more each time we visited so last October we put our house on the

market. We chose a building site and the home design we wanted. Our house sold very quickly so we moved into a transitional home at Opal until our new house was built.”

Ross says it’s great not having to drive to the bowling green. “I play twice a week, we walk home and we always feel safe. The community spirit, facilities and outings at this resort are only part of the things we enjoy.

“When we moved into our new home we were overwhelmed when our neighbours Linda and Steve welcomed us with a meal and bottle of bubbly. It’s great to live in such a friendly, supportive community.”

“WE HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT

DOWNSIZING SINCE WE STARTED RENOVATING

OUR HOME IN ORMEAU EIGHT YEARS AGO.”

LIFE’S GOOD FOR GAILGAIL HARVEY | OPAL BY LIVING GEMS

Gail Harvey is enjoying life at Opal by Living Gems Logan Village. Gail says when she decided to downsize her large home and garden she considered all the options.

“These included an apartment in the city, a townhouse in the suburbs or an over 50s’ resort. I made my choice, Opal by Living Gems Resort it was to be,” she says. “I chose this lovely resort in semi-rural Logan Village because the beautiful, architecturally designed homes are an investment for the future. I own my own home and there are no entry or exit fees.

Gail was surprised to learn home owners on a part or full age pension may be eligible for Centrelink rental assistance to help with the weekly site fees. “I did a lot of research about the differences

between retirement villages and residential resorts. Living Gems scored 10 out of 10,” she says.

“The sales people were very helpful and happily took me on tours and answered my many questions. I now look out on beautiful parkland, two lakes with a fountain, ducks and geese. I couldn’t have wished for more. Within days of moving in, other residents introduced themselves and their dogs. My neighbour invited me to happy hour at the country club. I knew then I was on a winner.

“My grandchildren love to visit and swim in the heated pool. During the school holidays, there are organised children’s movies in the magnificent cinema. My sons and daughters are amazed at the five-star amenities and the friendly community,” Gail says.

“I CHOSE THIS LOVELY RESORT BECAUSE

THE BEAUTIFUL, ARCHITECTURALLY

DESIGNED HOMES ARE AN INVESTMENT FOR

THE FUTURE.”

STYLE YOUR HOME FOR HEALTH, WEALTH AND HAPPINESS WITH FENG SHUI

Feng shui is the ancient art of using natural energy to enhance harmony in every aspect of your life.

Relationships, health and finances all seem to benefit from feng shui friendly surrounds.

CREATING YOUR HOME An harmonious space attracts well being and prosperity, it’s all about balance and energy. The flow of qi or energy is compared with a river and has the same capacity to invigorate or calm. Qi should meander through each room.

Natural elements and manufactured objects can block essential energy if they face the front entrance or windows. The first step is to clear personal space, get rid of clutter, organise those things that must be kept and arrange each room so the flow of qi is encouraged.

Plants, trees, water, mirrors, a myriad of elements and colours can be used to direct and redirect positive energies. A couch or the main seating that is the focal point of the living room must always face toward the entrance. It is a good idea to place the couch as close to the wall as possible.

This design scheme conforms to the principles of feng shui and appeals to our instincts. We prefer to be in a position of empowerment where we are in control.

Page 13: Living Gems Lifestyle Magazine

The placement of the television is more about how well you can conceal it when not in use. A separate media room is ideal but not always possible.

Try to keep the living area as the social hub and turn the TV off when there is an opportunity for conversation. If your living space is built around neutral hues with a few pops of bright colour then you already have things spot on.

Feng shui suggests that the living room is a place of yin so a calming and relaxed atmosphere is best. A balance of elements is another key aspect in creating this perfect harmony. Feng shui places great emphasis on bringing together the five elements of nature in every setting.

Fire, earth, water, metal and wood make up the five elements but they don’t have to be taken literally. For example, glass is a water element so you could place a stylish mirror near a fireplace (or candle) to balance fire and water.

Brick and ceramics can be used to usher in the earth element, while natural stone and metallic accents are an ideal way to give the room the hint of metal it needs. Plants are the perfect element in every style of décor and high on the list of feng shui must-haves.

Lighting is a key aspect. Avoid dark corners and shadows, use mirrors to create additional visual space along with better illumination. The perfect position for a mirror is against a solid wall. You should have a view of the door without the mirror being right in its path.

Bedroom harmony is essential According to feng shui philosophy, positioning your bed under a window is disruptive as energy can escape. A solid headboard adds support and the strategic use of features such as a footboard, flowing covers, throws and curtains encourage good qi.

Comfort is the key to a beautiful bedroom. Soft colours, bright or pastel highlights

and earth tones all work well. Feng shui experts recommend no electrical elements other than carefully chosen lighting in a bedroom.

Keeping a kitchen clutter free isn’t easy but good design and ample storage space helps. Hide equipment behind sliding cupboard doors. Add hanging plants in glass containers or herbs in pots for a chic modern look.

A screen can help create different zones in an open plan home. Search the décor stores for attractive freestanding screens or use plants to define an area. Plants and flower arrangements placed on a dining table should always be low. Tall plants create a barrier and block the flow of energy between people seated around the table.

Feng shui is really about comfort, common sense and an aesthetically pleasing home inside and out.

“Walking through the lava tubes is like walking on the moon. The guided tours are great, expert information is always useful and guides help protect the environment. When people wander around on their own they can cause damage to delicate environmental structures.”

Mal says he almost met his hero at Undara. “The tourist facilities at Undara were quite new when we first visited in the early ‘90s and David Attenborough had been invited to visit. Attenborough is my hero and I would have loved to have met him but we missed him by moments.

“I mentioned this to a friend of mine who then wrote to David Attenborough explaining the situation. I knew nothing about this but I was delighted when a few months later I received a parcel containing an autographed photograph and a note from David Attenborough. He has always been an inspiration and continues to be so.”

According to the longevity experts experiencing new things and being open to new ideas is the secret of a long and happy life. Mal and Laraine are a fine example of the theory. Mal says it saddens him when people put off doing the things they enjoy.

Mal Leyland and his late brother Mike inspired Australians to travel all over the countryside and explore the hidden gems in this big, brown land through the television series Ask the Leyland Brothers. Now semi-retired and based at Living Gems Maleny, Mal and his wife Laraine continue to share their travel experiences.

Mal‘s revealing memoir Still Travelling moves through his eventful life, his adventures, with Mike, their rise to fame, Mal’s triumph over cancer and his ongoing travels with his beloved wife Laraine. Ever the adventurer Mal continues to explore our beautiful and dangerous country. Still Travelling is a compelling account of a life lived to the full.

The Leyland Brothers became beloved Aussie icons from the first screening of their hazardous trip down the Darling River in a five-metre aluminium dinghy. They went on to have numerous adventures in their groundbreaking TV series. Many credit the intrepid travellers with the start of the four-wheel-drive revolution and a massive increase in Australian tourism.

Mal has plenty of tips on trips but his greatest piece of advice is to enjoy where you are. He says this is the secret to travelling. “Wherever the road takes you there is always something special. It may be a new discovery or it may be new to you. Make the most of it; enjoy whatever it is for whatever it is.”

The Leyland’s adventures have taken them through every state, they love them all but are particularly fond of Tasmania and Queensland. Mal says the variety of places to see and things to do is endless.

“Queensland is a great place to start. The terrain changes dramatically from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the coastal regions of the South East.

“One of the most amazing places we have visited is the lava tubes at Undara in the Gulf Savannah country in Tropica l Nor th Queensland. You can actually walk through the lava tubes created by volcanos millions of years ago. This place is very interesting, people who enjoy bushwalking, exploring, seeing rare animals and plants will find it all here.

“The name Undara apparently means a long way, it is but it’s worth the trip. It’s about a four to five hour drive from Townsville. It ’s well set up with places to stay and a caravan park. People planning to visit need to check the dates around the Green Season from November to March. This is the rainy season so the region has more greenery and wildlife but you may not be able to walk through the lava tubes.

MAL HAS PLENTY OF TIPS ON TRIPS BUT HIS GREATEST PIECE OF ADVICE IS

TO ENJOY WHERE YOU ARE.

“Don’t hesitate, do it now. The planet has been here for millions of years and it will be probably be here for millions more but you won’t so get out there and see it for yourself. Planning a trip has advantages but not planning can be more fun.

“The best sources of information are the people you meet on the journey. Take a roadside stop and check out the possibilities of an overnight stay. If there are other people around say hello, if they seem okay, have a chat, take them a cup of tea and a biscuit. You’ve made a new friend and they might know of a great place you wouldn’t have discovered if you hadn’t met them.

“We have followed a lot of roads on the advice of other travellers. It’s amazing what you can find just after that next turn or down that unsigned road. Enjoy the trip,” Mal says.

She says the long list of fixtures and fittings included in the standard price is another big winner with homebuyers.

“People can’t believe we give them everything from air conditioning to floor coverings and kitchen appliances without extra charges. All they really need to bring is their furniture and clothes. “Although this resort is in the early stages of development, we already have a lovely community spirit among our homebuyers. Living Gems has been very generous in helping people plan their move.

“We understand people can’t hold off when they have an offer on their family home so we give a helping hand when required. The Smith family sold their home, their new Living Gems home will soon be built, but in the meantime Living Gems pays the rent on a temporary home.

“Several other buyers are enjoying touring in their motor homes while we pay the fees on their furniture storage until they can move in to their new villas,” Glenys says.

Founding members of the Living Gems Caboolture community catch up for morning tea, lunch or drinks quite regularly. Glenys says this group of homebuyers will make the most of the lifestyle facilities.

“They are all active people with a wide variety of interests from amateur dramatics to ten pin bowling and we cater for them all. We are all looking forward to the completion of the resort so we can start living it up on our home turf,” Glenys says.

For more information about Living Gems Caboolture call Glenys on 1800 288 918 or visit www.livinggems.com.au.

QUEENSLAND CULTURE

Australian ballet lovers are in for a treat when the French Ballet Preljocaj performs at the Lyric Theatre from September 2 to 11. This performance is exclusive to Queensland, people from all over Australia will travel to see one of world’s leading contemporary ballet companies.

QPAC chief executive John Kotzas said this Brisbane exclusive is an exciting new twist to the QPAC International Series story. “Ballet Preljocaj’s Snow White is a phenomenal piece that traverses the darker side of the human condition and explores themes and ideas that are familiar to us all.

“The QPAC International Series will provide opportunities for engagement with the community; artist to artist and artist to audience, a whole program of events that opens up a dialogue on the arts and makes a connection between art and meaningful participation in civic life,” he says.

Brisbane’s Out of the Box festival for children aged up to eight years is a highlight on the cultural calendar. From June 21 to 28, QPAC, the Cultural Precinct and South Bank come alive with arts programs for families and schools.

QPAC has presented Australia’s largest early childhood arts festival for 24 years. Festival director Brett Howe said Out of the Box 2016 reflects Australia’s multi-cultural society. “The line up includes the K8 Children’s Symposium, a junior G8. It allows children to work alongside designers, architects, project managers and engineers to rethink Brisbane City,” he says.

The program delivers six theatre productions, 18 workshops and 18 free activities. See an exciting new digital and physical theatre show Creature based on Dot and the Kangaroo, the Gazillion Bubble Show, Snow 4 Kids and Rain: For Babies and Carers.

Other highlights include Little Big Shots, an international short film festival for kids. QPAC’s Melbourne Street Green will become a drive-in cinema with kids seated in custom-made cars.

This year’s festival will include evening performances. Special events include Dad’s Films featuring childhood favourite films nominated by fathers. A Children’s Art Gallery in the QPAC Tunnel will show 200 artworks. The Jarjums Life Museum shows Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through the eyes of children from Minjerribah and Hymba Yumba.

See www.outoftheboxfestival.com.au for the full program.

Out of the Box For Children

The multi award-winning shake & stir theatre co will celebrate a decade of success with a stellar line up at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

The season features Emily Bronté‘s Wuthering Heights, a brand new production of Samuel Beckett ’s ENDGAME and the critically-acclaimed Tequila Mockingbird.

In June, Bronté’s gothic masterpiece storms back into the Cremorne Theatre with new cast members Tim Dashwood and Gemma Willing. Australian film, television and theatre star Linden Wilkinson takes on the role of Nelly Dean.

From August 9 the company takes on Samuel Beckett’s absurdist icon ENDGAME. This tragically comic portrait of lives lived, loathed and lost stars stage veterans Robert Coleby and Jennifer Flowers in a not to be missed production.

The return of Tequila Mockingbird rounds off the company’s main stage season from October 5 to 15 .

Directed by Michael Futcher and featuring some of Queensland’s finest actors this play visits themes of racial prejudice, the perversion of justice and the consequences of alcohol abuse in a uniquely Australian context.

Nominated for six Matilda Awards in 2014 and winner of Best Mainstage Production this is a bold, brave work examining a darker side of Australian culture lurking just below the surface.

Celebrate 10 years with shake & stir

BILL AND GITTA MALKIN | OPAL BY LIVING GEMS

HOME AND AWAY – THE IDEAL RETIREMENTBill and Gitta Malkin are living the dream and reaping the rewards of a well-earned retirement. They love to travel and have seen more of Australia and the rest of the world than most people could imagine.

Bill spent 45 years with the Australian Defence Force. He began his career as a radio technician but after about 15 years he went back to school and qualified as an electronic engineer.

Bill took on the challenge of working with the F/A-18 fighter plane team retiring as a group captain in charge of all Hornet related projects.

Bill says it was a satisfying job. “The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine supersonic, all-weather carrier-capable multirole combat jet. Designed as a fighter and attack aircraft, it is used by the air forces of several nations including Australia.

He remained with the military at an age when most people would consider retiring and took on a major project in America. “Ultimately we were improving the defence of Australia,” Bill says.

“We integrated a new suite of technical equipment into an already very complex aircraft and then successfully ground and flight tested it. The complexities of the project drove the schedule to five years,” he says.

Bill and Gitta are now putting their acquired logistical skills into seeing even more of the world. Bill says since moving to Opal by Living Gems in Logan Village last year they have travelled overseas and taken their 27-foot Paradise Motorhome to various parts of Australia.

“Living here is a retirees dream, we can head off whenever we want knowing we don’t have to worry about security or having the lawn mowed. The few weeks we have been at home have been amazing, this is a great place and the people are lovely.

“We have several trips planned and one of them will take us to Esk with a small group of other nomads from Opal. We plan to take a number of vehicles on the road, we can circle the wagons at night and generally have a good time,” he says.

The trip to Esk will be a walk in the park to the Malkins. In the past few months they have driven 7,000 kilometres to Melbourne via outback Queensland and New South Wales. These keen travellers also took a road trip to Townsville.

They then went to Sydney but arranged to join an apprentice course reunion in Melbourne. They drove from Sydney to Melbourne, enjoyed the party and drove back to Sydney before driving home to Queensland.

“LIVING HERE IS A RETIREES DREAM,

WE CAN HEAD OFF WHENEVER WE WANT KNOWING WE DON’T

HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SECURITY OR HAVING

THE LAWN MOWED.”

Bill said the reunion was important. “It was the 50 year anniversary of my apprenticeship course enlistment and I couldn’t miss that. We enjoy travelling and have had plenty of practice with about 24 moves during our marriage.

“Most of these have been work related, military service involves moving around. We lived in America for 13 years.

“We have six children and 16 grandchildren. Three children and eight grandchildren live in Australia and three children (also with eight grandchildren) live in the USA. We try to visit the kids in America every two years.”

Despite the distance the family is close and a recent overseas trip included the Malkins’ youngest son and his family. “We travelled via Dubai to London and went up to Scotland to see the Edinburgh Tattoo.

“We then visited Ireland, returning to London to meet up with the kids and then we went to Paris, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. After the kids went home, we went off to explore Sweden and Denmark. We all enjoyed a magnificent holiday,” he says.

L I F E S T Y L E R E S O R T S

Bill says the next project is a trip up the Waterfall Way. “The touring route winds inland from the Pacific Highway, through Bellingen and up to Dorrigo. Apparently the 30km mountain road is quite steep but the view and the waterfalls are worth it,” he says.

When Bill and Gitta return from this trip they will be greeted like long lost friends by their neighbours at Opal by Living Gems. This popular couple make the most of the lifestyle facilities including the pool and spa. They are invited to many resort events.

“We love living here, we looked at several retirement places before this but none of them suited our needs. We were made welcome from day one. Now we are part of the community and enjoying ourselves immensely,” Bill says.

The Malkins’ next big trip will take them on an expedition around Australia. Living Gems general manager Adrian Puljich says residents are hoping they will post a blog on the facebook page.

“These people make the most of every moment, they are great fun and very interesting. I know other people who own homes in Living Gems Resorts would love to read their travel tales. Living Gems is about living the dream and that’s what the Malkins are doing,” Adrian says.

Local farmers Denis and Hilda Latcham are looking forward to moving in to their beautiful home and enjoying Living Gems’ Best in the World Award winning facilities.

Hilda says when they decided to move from farm life to town life Living Gems Glenvale was the obvious choice. “When Living Gems started advertising their superior homes and facilities there was no question that this was the place to be,” she says.

“Karen has been amazing. The process has been streamlined so nothing is a drama. We have been made welcome; we feel so relaxed, stress free and part of a family,” Hilda says.

TOOWOOMBA WAS TO BE OUR HOME, IT STILL HAS THE COUNTRY FEEL AND ASSOCIATION.

RITA AND LINDSAY DALGLIESH | LIVING GEMS GLENVALE

Rita and Lindsay Dalgliesh decided to make the move from Chinchilla to Living Gems Glenvale. “We have lived on the land as farmers all our lives. Toowoomba has always been our main centre for shopping, visiting doctors and all our other business,” Rita says.

“When it came time to retire from farming we decided Toowoomba was to be our home, it still has that country feel and associations. We have a caravan and love to travel so we looked for a base where we had security while travelling and where we could have our van with us.

“Our little dog is important and very welcome at Living Gems and we aren’t far from shops, medical services and hospitals. We like the fact that Living Gems is family owned and hands on.

“It’s community within a community, management on site, 100 per cent of capital gain retained, no entry or exit fees. Living Gems has answered all our questions. They have been very helpful in discussing our future home.

“We love the fact they have taken us to see their other Living Gems over 50s’ resorts. The quality and design of the homes meets all our requirements,” Rita says.

Single lady Bronwyn Newman moved from New South Wales to Toowoomba in 2014 just two years after losing her husband. She says being relatively recently widowed and not knowing many people in the region wasn’t easy.

“It’s hard to meet new people when living on your own. When I saw Living Gems Glenvale advertise the new resort I decided to enquire. I liked what the resort has to offer. Life is for living at Living Gems Glenvale.

“I will meet a range of likeminded people, have a social life and form new friendships with people in the resort. We will have great facilities and the clubhouse to enjoy. I can’t wait to move in to my new villa,” Bronwyn says.“I WILL MEET A RANGE

People find treasure everyday. You could be the next to find something of value in an unlikely place and you can have heaps of fun trying. Antique Road Show fans will be familiar with the pleasant surprises people have received when an expert valued their keepsakes.

A British man had an unexpected windfall after an old coin that had been in his family for generations sold at auction for more than $88000. His a 5.2cm solid silver Declaration Pound dated 1643 was minted one year after the start of the English Civil War.

Teenager Ryan Kitching found some old lottery tickets while tidying up an old desk. He had a feeling he should get them checked. He was right, one was a winner worth about $82,000 Australian.

US garage sale shoppers bought a bowl for $3. It turned out to be a Song dynasty bowl and sold at a Sotheby’s New York auction for $2.2 million.

Again in the USA, a couple bought a tattered copy of the US Declaration of Independence at a junk sale for less than $4. The book was kept for years before they discovered it was one of a few copies commissioned by founding father John Quincy Adams. They sold it for $250,000.

Californian Teri Horton, a senior citizen truck driver, picked up a painting at a thrift store for $5. When she was told it was by Jackson Pollock, she said ‘Who the f--- is Jackson Pollock?’ Horton has since refused offers as high as $9 million, she’s holding out for $50 million.

In 2006, a record collector picked up an unlabelled EP with a handwritten Velvet Underground label at a garage sale in New York. It turned out to be an acetate master of the Velvet Underground’s demotape. He paid 75 cents for the record and sold it for more than $25,000.

A sketch by Andy Warhol, who did the cover art for the first Velvet Underground album, turned up at a Vegas garage sale and went unnoticed, even by its buyer, for two years. The buyer took the sketch to be reframed and discovered it was worth about $5 million. He decided not to sell.

Employees at a Washington thrift store were stunned when an original Salvador Dali sketch turned up in their donations bin. The organisation listed it with a $1000 reserve, it sold for more than $20,000.

An American scrap metal dealer bought a gold egg at a flea market for $14,000 on gut instinct. Research revealed it as one of eight missing imperial Fabergé eggs made for the Russian Tsars in the 1800s and valued at $33 million.

All these finds were made in Britain and the USA. We can only imagine what could be available in this the Lucky Country. Follow the garage sales, visit the car boot sales and trawl the second hand shops. If all else fails you can always get out the metal detector.

YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY

The words can all be found in the puzzle. They may be spelled horizontally, vertically, backwards, forwards

or diagonally. Be careful, some letters are used more than once. When you find a word, circle each letter.

When all the words in the list have been found, the letters left over will spell the solution. Once you find

the words in the list and put a line through them, the remaining letters spell the solution. Answers on page 31

Living Gems interior designer Jessica Puljich has a great eye for fashion and style in every element and she knows how to make plants work in and around the home. Jess says indoor plants can add a focal point. “Some plants have additional benefits. I have chosen a few of my favourites with the added bonus of purifying the air in keeping with our environmentally friendly philosophy. My top three are readily available, easy to care for, help reduce toxins in the air and look lovely. We couldn’t ask for more.

THE HUMBLE HOUSEPLANT IS ONCE AGAIN THE HEIGHT OF FASHION. INDOOR PLANTS ADD A WELCOMING TOUCH TO ANY HOME AND SOME HELP PURIFY THE AIR. ADD ONE OF OUR FAVOURITE PLANTS TO GIVE YOUR HOME THE DESIGNER EDGE.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

• This plant will survive long dry spells, if your plant survival rate is low, this is the one for you

• It is virtually indestructible and thrives in every level of light

• Slow growing and hardy, this little beauty only needs a drink every couple of weeks

• Large glossy leaves look gorgeous against a light background

• This tropical ficus likes a moist, warm environment but won’t thrive in bright sunlight

• This beautiful plant has long shiny leaves and white flowers.

• It will bloom in light areas and places that have little natural light. Light will produce flowers but the shiny leaves will thrive in shade. These plants need very little water, allow the soil to dry before watering.

“Kids thrive when they are occupied

and interested in a project so we have

a range of break time activities.

“We have a soccer coach and there’s

a bike shed where volunteers help fix

up recycled bikes and scooters. We

have a drama group, arts and crafts

activities, a bush-tucker garden plus a

vegetable and herb gardens. We are

about to get some chickens.

“Our program of life skills includes

shopping and cooking plus a range

of other activities. The Living Gems

ukulele group are going to teach the

kids to play. Some of the kids may have

a go at making a ukulele or a guitar.

“Programs and activities have to

be realistic, relevant and enjoyable.

They have to work within the school

curriculum and budget as well as with

the time volunteers are able to give.

Programs and volunteers enhance

optimism and future prospects. Our

volunteers are a valuable resource,”

Andrew says.

Volunteer Lyn Foster says everyone

enjoys giving their time to the school.

“The volunteers are marvellous.

Whether they are helping in the

classroom, teaching woodwork,

serving in the tuckshop or the

breakfast club they put their hearts

and souls in to it,” she says.

“Principal Andrew Barnes is an

inspiration. His staff, students and

volunteers hold him in high esteem;

we would nominate him for any

citizenship award. The school has

grown from about 200 to about

400 over the years, that’s a lot of

young lives that can benefit from a

great leader, dedicated teachers and

enthusiastic volunteers.

“Andrew has developed an excellent

environment within the school

community. He has to deal with

problem children and social issues

but he never loses faith in the future.

Andrew is at school from early in the

morning. He doesn’t hide away in his

office, he is out there in the playground

and in the classrooms encouraging

everyone to be the best they can be.

“There is always more that can be

done. I would like to raise money so

every child can learn to swim. It would

be great if every child could go to

school camp but not everyone can

afford it. My husband Ron and I helped

send one child to camp and Living

Gems management funded another.

“Some companies help provide food

for the breakfast club and the tuck

shop or plants for the garden. There

is an opportunity here for companies

and volunteers to make a difference.

We all reap the rewards of helping to

create a better society and a better

future for all children,” she says.

Older people and primary school

students are a great mix according to

Eagleby South State School Principal

Andrew Barnes. “Children benefit

from one-to-one contact with adults,”

Andrew says. “It may be a conversation

or sharing a book but it’s all about

spending time together.

“Not all kids have this interaction at

home so when a group of retirees from a

Living Gems over 50s’ resort in Eagleby

volunteered to help at the school we were

delighted. This is gold to us,” he says.

“Long standing member of the school

community Lyn Foster has worked with

us for about eight years. She lives at

Ruby by Living Gems Resort in Eagleby

and presented the idea of volunteering

to the resident’s committee.

“Former residents’ committee president

Graham Douglas and current president

Des Paisley were keen on the idea so

they helped get it together. About 20

residents attended a meeting at the

school to talk about how they could

make a difference,” Andrew says.

A number of Living Gems’ residents

are now involved in a variety of school

programs and projects. Andrew says

some work in the classroom helping with

reading and literacy; others give their time

to the breakfast club and the tuck shop.

“Reading and oral literacy is essential. It

teaches children how to communicate

but it also helps form a bond. I know the

kids Lyn has worked with. She has made

a major difference in their lives and given

them lifelong values. They will always

remember her.

“This is true of every volunteer. The

breakfast club provides a healthy meal

for kids three times a week but it is also a

social occasion.

TIME FOR SCHOOL

LIVING GEMS’ RESIDENTS ARE NOW INVOLVED IN A VARIETY OF EAGLEBY

SOUTH STATE SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS. SOME VOLUNTEERS WORK IN THE

CLASSROOM HELPING WITH READING AND LITERACY; OTHERS GIVE THEIR TIME TO THE

BREAKFAST CLUB AND THE TUCK SHOP.
