Greetings,What a beautiful fall. I guess that’s

my opinion anyway. It looks like the harvest is going really well, weather is awesome. Sale season is underway. Life is good.

Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a weekend in the Grand Rapids area. I was there to attend the Ridgeview Sale in Alto, Michigan. While I was waiting for my luggage at the airport, Monte Soules came up

and asked if I cared to ride with him and share a rental car. Well, of course that was fine with me. He also said I’d have to ride to Michigan State University to look at cattle, and again, that was fine. I’ve wanted to see those cattle for years. Monte took me on a quick but very impressive tour of the cattle barn, and several pens of cattle and then the campus. Some of the most elite cattle people in the world have come from or taught at that institution.

After Monte’s tour of the Michigan State University cattle depart-ment, and then through Ridgeview cattle, and then what seemed like 20 phone calls later, we decided it was time to feed ourselves. We took off driving and as most of you know, Monte and I lead pretty sheltered lives. We didn’t know the community, so we landed at a restaurant called Old

Chicago. We had no idea what it was, but it was close and lots of other people thought it was good by the looks of the parking lot.

We looked a little out of place in a building full of young people and folks cheering about the ball games on TV, but we thought surely they would have a steak of some kind. Wrong. They had one, but the waitress said from the looks of our hats she thought we probably knew a good steak, and the one they had wasn’t a bad steak but she just thought we were looking for great. We both discussed how we didn’t recognize much on the menu that resembled food, so being the rocket scientists we are, we ordered appetizers.

Monte started with Sicilian Pepperoni Rolls. Does that sound like food that we eat? Not even an little. Not much pep-peroni and lots of breading. Next to the Signature Trio that was no more than a pile of Doritos cheese and more pepperoni rolls. Keep in mind I think that this place is great for folks that need a snack and want to watch a football game with a group of friends.

Most of you know Monte and I have

Yardley Females are real world cattle. We expect these cows to stay fat and maintain their body weight while raising a 700 lb. calf without creep. We select cattle that have as perfect phenotype as possible so that they are pleasing on the eye. They have the ability to be competitive in the show ring, produce in the real world and bring top price on the commercial market. We have AI’d for 43 years. We analyze EPD’s but the main selection tools Gib has always used are individual perfor-mance, birth weights, weaning and yearling weights, udder quality, eye appeal and perfect conformation. We feel that many people in the cattle business have used EPD’s as their only selection tool and are left with a plain made, hard doing cow base. Yardley genetics are maternally based, add a dose to your female battery!

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

by evan Rayl

Steve Jobs, the man who created the many Apple products used all over the world as well as the most profitable company on Wall Street in recent years, has died from pancreatic cancer. In recent days, he has been compared to Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison for his influ-ence on the world. Without a doubt, the iMac, iBook, iPod, iPhone, and iPad have changed how we all live in the 35 years since he and his cohorts came up with the idea for the original Apple computer and later followed up with the MacIntosh 128K that abandoned text-only com-mands and sported a “mouse.” At Livestock Plus, all of us involved with this publication have used nothing but Apple computers ever since day one, eighteen short years ago. Apple is the publishing businesses' best friend. Right now, I am using my seventh Apple computer. They are remarkable machines, in that they are the best encyclopedia ever, terrific at spelling, and will heal themselves most times if one will just shut them off for a little while. Even if you use a “Brand X” computer, take a moment to thank Steve Jobs, he indirectly changed all of them as well.

Big things are expected of us, and nothing big ever came of being small.

China is expecting a record corn harvest this fall, but they are still going to need to import 5 to 10 million metric tons of corn. Their average yield is 86 bushel per acre. The yield has been holding steady for the past few years, but total acres have gone up 34 percent during this time. They average 23,000 plants per acre and pick 60-80 percent of their corn by hand. I'm sure glad not to be a farmer living in China! Picking corn by hand was the thing I hated the most growing up on the farm years ago.

Speaking of China, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has announced it is one of six government agencies launching a nine-month crackdown on everything from illegal slaughtering to the use of clenbuterol. They are telling local authorities to make food safety a priority by targeting farmers markets and supermarkets in suspected cases of selling “uninspected and substandard meat products.” They want small towns and villages to achieve compliance with food safety laws by the end of 2012. The six agencies are cooperating to step up law enforcement and form an entire seamless regulatory chain for com-bating private and excessive slaughtering.

We cannot build our own future without helping others to build theirs.

Back in 1984, a fast food commercial became a national catch-phrase with the slogan, “Where’s the Beef?” Now the restaurant chain involved, Wendy’s, answers the question with a new hamburger ad cam-paign that says, “Here’s the Beef.” Years ago they were promoting their Single, Double and Triple burgers. Now its a new line of Dave’s Hot ‘N Juicy Cheeseburgers, named after the founder of Wendy’s, R. David Thomas.

Half way around the world in the Southern Hemisphere, McDonald’s has a partnership with New Zealand Angus breeders that has seen a record volume in recent months. The chain has purchased 1.7 million kg of local Angus beef and launched a premium burger two years ago. Now McDonald’s hopes a new Kiwi Angus Burger will further boost record sales and the New Zealand Angus breed association, Angus-Pure hopes for a further boost in cattle sales. The price of 2 year old Angus bulls has increased by an average of $1,240 since the program started.

Success is not the measure of a man but a triumphover those who choose to hold him back.

I want to mention my new favorite fast food restaurant, “SmashBurger.” We have been going to one in Des Moines, IA, but I see on the internet, they have places in most every state and many more are being added. They feature a CAB burger that is big and very tasty, a meal in-itself. Besides a variety of hamburger toppings and fries, they have chili and chicken sandwiches. You order at a counter, but you can hardly round up napkins, straws and etc. before your food arrives at your table. I recommend you give them a try.

There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be curedby what is right with America.

All are quotes from President Bill Clinton

In most areas, farmers and ranchers have a decent crop and prices are up. The only bad part is costs are up, too. But there are areas where things have not been so good where they’ve had drought, flooding, or tornados. In the South, the drought was so bad, total cow herds have been sold and now many are finding wells so low that there is hardly enough water for humans. Along the Missouri River, farmers got their crops in, but then the flooding came and they had to move to temporary residences, take their machinery along, and sell any grain they had on hand. Their houses & farmsteads are almost ruined and there will be no crop this year and maybe next. Where tornados came, houses, buildings, and machinery were destroyed. In each case, family living expenses and property taxes have continued. These people have all had a tough year. They need your prayers, as well as any help anyone can give. For example, our church is helping a family in Joplin, Missouri. n

not missed many meals. We are kinda the meat, veggie and potato kind, unlike anyone else there. Well, on to the main course, Big Chicago Meatballs and Spaghetti. Again do Monte and I look like the pasta types? Anyway, Monte and I had a good time and folks, don’t take my comments wrong, Old Chicago is a great place for family and friends and they sure have great waitresses.

The best steak of the month, I prepared myself. I just happened to be in Anita looking at cattle at the Cow Palace and on my way home decided to make a pit stop at the Anita Meat Processing shop. Pam assured me that the ribeyes in the cooler were of the utmost in quality. So the Traeger grill got fired up and Pam’s ribeyes hit my plate 20 minutes later. Good meat, my Traeger grill, and my Baldridge seasoning can make almost any steak a great one. I would say this steak would have to be the best one I’ve had for awhile. Anita Meat Processing, thanks for a great piece of meat with flavor.

Kansas City, and a Waffle House, ten o’clock at night, is just a treat I never get tired of experiencing. I just have a hankering every once in a while to have a Waffle House pork chop. They are paper thin, hard to screw up and you add scrambled eggs and hash browns, its just the oil changing that everybody needs once in awhile. Waffle House is one of those places at which the customers have personalities second to none. This trip was no different. I was blessed with an Elvis look alike; try to keep from laughing on that one. Can you believe that some of these upstanding citizens were asking to get a picture with him? I’m not sure how old Elvis would be by now but this guy was in the same vintage and that’s old. I would just as soon remember Elvis, as he was, not on the verge of assisted living and a wheel chair with cheap hair die. What’s amazing to me is he was a celebrity to these people. I just can’t wait till the next adventure at the Waffle House. It will be yet another surprise.

As always, please keep our service folks past and present in your thoughts and prayers. God Bless all of you and Happy Thanksgiving! Travel safe and see ya at the next sale.

News Release

Announces Scholarship Award to be Presented

The Embryos on Snow Sale is an elite auction auction featuring some of the best genetics in the seedstock business. The sale is held each January in Denver, Colorado, during the National Western Stock Show. The auction consists of embryos from leading donor dams, rare semen, as well as other select lots. The selection process is backed by the knowl-edge and past success of the marketing team and the breeders who helped start it. Many successful programs have lined the foundation of this impressive annual sale. Sale entry is by invitation and genetics featured in the Embryos on Snow are exclusive to this sale offering.

In 2011, the announcement of the Embryos on Snow Scholarship Program was made. The majority of the sale’s 2011 commissionable proceeds, in addition to a generous sponsorship made by TransOva Genetics, will serve as the first scholarship to be awarded. The name of the scholarship was changed in June 2011 to “La Prix.” The winner of the first contest will receive $10,000 and the runner up will be presented with a $3,000 award. Applicants must be between the ages of 19 and 21 (as of July 1st in the year of application) and have some cattle and farm or ranch background. An applicant must hold American or Canadian citizen-ship and have some past knowledge of the Embryos on Snow program.

Applicants will be narrowed down by a committee of judges and the final award winner will be selected by an alternate committee through an inter-view process to be held during the National Western.

“La Prix” is an essay type contest that will seek to find the young people that have a great deal of ambition, knowledge and ability. The essay contest will not be based on writing ability, rather on content, cre-ativity and the future intent of a young person. An applicant may have any goal, collegiate major or career in mind. The award application or more information on the Embryos on Snow auction can be found at www.col-linscattleservices.com or embryosonsnow.com. The application due date is November 25th. n

Prime Time is Sullivan’s strongest leg adhesive. Designed for medium length, thinner type hair. The natural look with a little more holding power. Sprays at just the right consistence that is desirable.

The strongest adhesive for hard to hold

coarse stubborn hair. You can depend on Tail Adhesive. It has the holding power you desire.

Used to form tail bush and on leg hair when a fuller, stouter look is desired.

Ultra White Touch-Up covers stained or faded hair with a smooth natural powder white color. It also works great to build up legs to achieve a thick fuller appearance, even on black cattle. Spraying a little white touch-up on the legsandflankalsoenablesyoutoseethehairandthedirec-tion, to be able to clip it better.

Jet Black Touch-Up covers completely, the hair will appear thicker, fuller and deeper black. Works well on dull

hair and will not break down your adhesives. Jet Black Touch-Up has a medium black color and sprays with just

the right consistency.

*You do need to keep these products at the right temperature. Extreme temperatures in winter and summer are not suitable for these products. In the winter they need to be kept warm at room temperature and in the summer, cooled to room temperature.

ANEWcattlefittingtoolthatwill obtain hair perfection. The Hair Wizard’s wire teeth separates every last hair strand. It actually reaches under the hair, down to the hide and pulls up that hair you didn’t even know existed. This is not possible with any other

comb.TheHairWizardisverybeneficialintheloin,tailheadandtoparea,theflankandbellyline,andthebackfinsofthelegs.Itworksincredible on thin to medium body hair that needs more base.

The Smart Comb is just that...a NEW multi-tasking, yet the lightest weight comb on the market. It has interchangeable blades that securely snap in and out of a plastic handle that allows you to pick the blade of choice. It comes as a complete unit with Sullivan’s Stimulator, Fluffer, and Skip tooth blades in one package. You can also purchase separately as a handle and your choice of a blade. We recommend these for everyday use and in the showring, butthestealteethcombsshouldbeusedforfittingtheleghair because they pull through the hair and divide them instead of matting the hair down.

PRODUCTS WE BELIEVE IN

They work heads and tails above the competition.

As you all know, we work with some great companies on developingproductsthatwillimprovethewaywefit, clip, andshowcattle. So we thought that we would share with everyone what we feel are superior products. This month’s focus is on Sullivan Supply products.

John Sullivan entered the show supply business and had a vision of a company that went beyond providing just the ordinary. (Check out the history of Sullivan supply on facebook for a neat write up on how it all began.) He started making products out of his mother’s garage in 1989 and the business has grown to be the most known, and greatest quality products in the industry. Most of the Sullivan products are made here in the United States. Educating the youth and empowering them to go after their dreams has always been a strong passion for us, as well as John. Through his support of our Mc-Cullough Fitting Clinics and his new program Stock Show “U,” start-ed in 2011, we are able to share the gifts God has given us to teach others, all over the United States. We are excited about the products that Sullivan’s has came out with this past year and wanted to share with everyone the products we feel are above the competition. Keep in mind that there are many others, but I only have one page!

This comb comes with two different handle choices, a wooden handle and an aluminum

handle. Sullivan’s comb with metal blade is a must for pull-ing up the leg hair or breaking

through the hair on the really hairy cattle. With a wood or aluminum handle . This exciting comb is great for use on thick haired cattle. The short teeth pop out the long guard hairs and prevent lines that a skip-tooth comb may cause.

Ultra Sheen is a concentrated hair polish for show cattle. This product contains conditioners to nourish hair coats. Mixes with water to make one gallon. We like to

mix the Ultra Sheen 2/3 and the Hair Stimulator 1/3 to for a great hold with lots of pop and shine.

Hair Stimulator, this fantastic hair stimulator, hence the name. It chills the hide to make hair stand on end. Use as a hair popper for clipping, working hair at shows or show day grooming. Hair Stimulator contains no harsh acetones to damage hair like other liniments. Mix with Ultra Sheen is what we recommend.

ZoomBloomgiveshairthebloomandfluffyouwant.Hair pops naturally. It gives set, body, and shine to hair. A favorite of professionals. Just spray on and comb then

blow dry to set and keep in mind the longer you blow the the more pop you get. Works well with Sullivan’s Styling Mousse Spray Foam if more holding power is desired. It

works well in hot or cold weather.

What’s on my mind....By toby Muller

Sure enough, one of the questions I’ll get before I hang up the phone with a new ultrasound customer is “How much do you get per head?” At this point there is usually a brief pause as I try to quickly assess the last 3 minutes of conversation. Where are the cattle? How many are we doing? Am I going that way soon for any other jobs? Did he say he had a squeeze chute or a hydraulic? It’s usually at that point that I give them an estimate of what it will cost and book a date to run the cattle through. My goal, along with most of the techni-cians in the industry, “is to provide this technology as affordably as possible and give everyone the opportunity to use it.” What I’d like to say to the people that haven’t made the call to ultrasound their cowsis:Youcan’taffordnottodoit.

An ultrasound machine in an experienced hand can be nearly infallible in my opinion (and obviously my opinion is biased). Other methods, as many of you have experienced, can have a certain degree of error. So what does that cost you? Well I’m not that smart, but my “dumb-farmer math” says that a buck-a-day doesn’t feed a cow anymore and if you carry a couple extra mouths six months or so that adds up to be more than just a few hundred dollars. That’s not to mention the cows that may have “accidently” been sold. If there hap-pens to be a snow storm during calving season and you know which cows to lock up tight, the money savings just keep racking up.

Preg-check ultrasound is for everybody that owns a cow. Find an experienced and competent technician and give it a try. With the right person, the cost is low, the speed is fast and the accuracy is very high. n

CALL NOW to place your Christmas

order!

I hope everyone is enjoying the wonder-ful fall weather! It’s so hard to sit in front of a computer and actually get any work done!

Working from home is definitely interest-ing and pretty eventful at times. This month I really began to realize just how much my daughter has begun copying EVERYTHING I do. Every month during deadline week I usually go through a couple one pound bags of M&Ms. Yeah, yeah, I know that it’s not

good for me but they are a necessity, like breathing, when I am working under a deadline. Well, this month as I continually reached for my M&Ms,

I thought, “gosh I am going through these quicker than normal!” Turns out that a certain 2 year old was having quite the dessert with her pizza/tea party that she sets up in my office while I work. I’m pretty sure Charlie, the cat and her partner in crime, may have gotten a couple, too.

Well, I have to thank Dad this month for motivating me back into “trying” to cook din-ner in the evenings. The kids and I stopped down at Mom and Dad’s the other night and

Dad was grilling. He asked us if we wanted to stay for dinner and of course I jumped at the invitation. I think the thing I hate most about cooking is the clean up, so I never turn down an invitation!! Dad then proceeded to make a comment about how I used to make meals and invite him, guilt trip much? Tucker heard him and of course had to add his comment, “Yeah, Mom USED to cook.” By this point, I kind of want to kick them both!

So in my competitive nature I called my sister and she helped me plan out a couple weeks of meals. I am the first to admit I am not a great cook but I have a few basics that I fall back on. I would, however, like to try something new and different. I want to feature a recipe each month that is sent in by our readers and I will even try it before we print it. However, here are the stipulations, it has to be quick and EASY. I am hoping to get some slow cooker recipes and maybe some variations on the use of beef! So please, please get out your family favorites and e-mail them to me …[email protected]

I have forgotten the last couple of times to mention that one of our ad designers, Kelsey Cupp, tied the knot in August. She could be one of the most beautiful brides I have ever seen! So a big CONGRATULATIONS to the newlyweds…Kelsey and Tim Steinkraus!! Happily Ever After….

It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you. ~Author Unknown Please remember the military in your prayers and Happy Thanksgiving!
